Chapter 117: Sothing Answered First
Chapter 117
The pressure disappeared so suddenly it left a hollow silence behind, like the space had been holding its breath and finally let it go. Ariana’s hands stayed firm on Kael’s shoulders as she leaned closer, her fingers trembling despite how hard she tried to steady them. "Kael... look at ," she said, her voice tight, the fear no longer hidden.
For a mont, nothing happened, and the stillness stretched just long enough to feel wrong. Then his chest rose unevenly, the breath catching halfway before settling, and his shoulders shifted under her hands as if his body was slowly pulling itself back together. Ariana didn’t move, her grip tightening instinctively as relief tried to rise, but never fully settled.
"Kael," she said again, softer now, searching.
His eyes opened, and the mont should have brought relief, but sothing in the way he looked at her stopped it before it could land. His gaze was steady, too steady, and it didn’t carry the recognition she had been waiting for. Ariana felt it first in her chest, a quiet drop that didn’t make sense yet but refused to go away.
"Kael...?" she asked, her voice lower now, uncertain.
He didn’t answer right away, but his breathing evened out in a way that felt too controlled for soone who had just gone through what he had. His eyes stayed on her, focused without hesitation, without adjustnt, as if he had already been there before she spoke. That alone made her grip tighten again, her instincts refusing to settle.
Then his fingers moved, slow and deliberate, tightening around her hand.
Ariana felt it imdiately, her pulse jumping as her grip reacted without thinking. "Kael, say sothing," she said, the edge in her voice sharper now, almost breaking through.
His lips parted, and for a second she thought he would answer. His jaw shifted slightly, like the words were there, but sothing held them back just long enough to matter. "I’m here," he said finally, and the voice was close enough to his to almost be convincing.
Almost.
Ariana’s breath caught before she could stop it, her eyes narrowing slightly as she studied his face more carefully. "Kael... look at ," she said again, quieter now, not asking, but checking.
He didn’t look away, and that was the problem.
There was no flicker of recognition settling into place, no mont of grounding, no sign of soone returning after being lost. He was already focused on her, already present, and it felt less like he had co back and more like sothing had been waiting for her to notice.
Ariana felt her chest tighten as the thought settled, her grip loosening slightly before she forced it to steady. "You’re back," she said, more to confirm it than to believe it.
"Yes," he answered.
The response ca too easily, too clean, and the lack of strain in it made sothing in her chest tighten instead of ease. Ariana drew in a slow breath, her fingers shifting as she watched him more carefully now. "What do you rember?" she asked, her tone controlled, but testing.
There was a pause, not hesitation, but sothing else.
His fingers twitched slightly in her grip, like he was about to respond differently, but the mont passed before it could form. Then his hold tightened just enough to stop her hand from pulling away. "Everything," he said.
Ariana’s breath hitched slightly, her gaze sharpening. "Then tell ," she said, her voice steady now, though the tension beneath it had deepened.
His eyes didn’t leave hers. "I ended it," he said.
The answer was correct.
But it didn’t feel right.
Ariana shook her head slightly, her grip pulling against his this ti. "No," she said quietly. "That’s not what I ant."
For the first ti, sothing shifted, not in his posture or expression, but in the space around him. It tightened subtly, just enough for her to feel it, and her body reacted before her thoughts could catch up.
"Kael..." she said, slower now.
He didn’t answer.
His jaw tightened slightly, just enough to show sothing underneath, but it didn’t reach his voice.
Then sothing else did.
"You’re asking the wrong question."
The words ca steady and clear, but Ariana felt the difference imdiately. The sound was right, but the timing wasn’t, like the response had arrived before he could choose it.
Her breath caught, her grip slipping for a fraction of a second before tightening again as her pulse spiked. "Kael..." she said again, but this ti it wasn’t a call.
It was a warning.
His expression didn’t change, but his head tilted slightly, the movent controlled in a way that didn’t belong to him. "You already know the answer," it said, calm and certain.
Ariana pulled back just enough to create space, her chest tightening as sothing cold settled into place. "No," she said, her voice tight now, though she didn’t break eye contact.
His hand didn’t let her go.
The grip tightened, not painfully, but firm enough to stop her from pulling away. For a split second, his fingers shifted again, like he was trying to loosen his hold, but it didn’t follow through.
"Ariana," he said, and this ti it sounded like him.
That made it worse.
Her chest tightened sharply as she searched his face again, looking for sothing familiar, sothing real she could hold onto. "Kael... let go," she said, quieter now, steady despite the tension building inside her.
He didn’t.
Instead, his thumb brushed slightly against her hand, a small movent that should have grounded her, but felt wrong in a way she couldn’t explain. "You stayed," he said, his voice low.
The words were simple.
But they didn’t belong to him.
Ariana’s breath caught as the realization hit, her free hand lifting slightly as if she didn’t know whether to reach for him or pull away. "What?" she asked, her voice unsteady now.
His gaze didn’t waver. "You didn’t leave," he said.
That wasn’t Kael. Not now.
Ariana felt it settle deep in her chest, heavy and undeniable, her body reacting before she could stop it. "Kael..." she said again, softer this ti, her voice breaking despite her effort to hold it steady.
For a second, nothing changed, and she held her breath as she searched his face for sothing familiar. Then his grip loosened slightly, not enough to let her go, but enough to feel the shift.
"I’m here," he said again. This ti, it sounded right.
Almost.
Ariana didn’t move, because the difference was small but impossible to ignore. It wasn’t in his voice or his expression, but in the way it settled, like sothing was speaking just ahead of him, answering before he fully could.
She felt it then, clear and undeniable.
He had co back.
But sothing else had answered first.
