Chapter 112: What Refuses to End
Chapter 112
Kael didn’t answer Ariana right away, but sothing in him had already shifted forward. The understanding from the mory hadn’t faded, and it settled deeper in a way that changed how he looked at what stood in front of them.
The figure didn’t collapse after his realization. It held its shape, but sothing about it had changed, becoming less certain, as if his refusal had interrupted sothing it had been trying to complete.
Ariana noticed it too, her gaze narrowing slightly as she studied the distortion. "It’s changing," she said, her voice quieter now but steady.
Kael gave a small nod without looking away. His jaw remained tight, and his grip on her hand didn’t loosen. "It’s reacting," he replied, his tone controlled even though the tension in his chest had not eased.
The space around them tightened again, not violently, but in a way that made the air feel heavier with each breath. The distance between them and the figure no longer felt stable, as if the domain itself was adjusting to what was happening.
The shape flickered again, its outline struggling to hold together. The figure of the woman ford for a mont, then broke at the edges before pulling itself back into place.
Ariana slowed her breathing as she watched it, but her fingers tightened slightly in his. "It can’t hold," she said.
Kael didn’t answer imdiately, because sothing about that didn’t feel right. The connection inside his chest had not weakened, and if anything, it had settled deeper in a way he could not ignore.
"No," he said after a mont, his voice lower now. "It’s not failing."
Ariana turned slightly toward him, her expression tightening as she searched his face. "Then what is it doing?"
Kael’s gaze remained fixed ahead, his shoulders tense but steady. "It’s adjusting."
The word settled between them, and the space reacted as if it had been waiting for it. The distortion tightened again, and the figure stilled, not disappearing but holding itself with deliberate control.
Then sothing shifted.
The pull changed direction, no longer reaching for Ariana but pressing deeper into Kael. It didn’t drag him forward, but it moved through him, trying to align with him in a way that felt more direct than before.
Ariana felt it imdiately, her grip tightening around his hand. "Kael," she said, sharper now, her voice carrying a warning she couldn’t hide.
He didn’t pull away, but he didn’t let it settle either. His posture shifted slightly as he steadied his breathing, forcing himself to stay grounded.
"I know," he said quietly.
The figure responded, its form tightening as if his reaction had given it sothing to hold onto. The emptiness around it no longer felt hollow, and the pressure in the space deepened.
It felt anchored to him.
Ariana’s expression changed as she realized it, her brows pulling together. "It’s using you," she said.
Kael shook his head slightly, his jaw tightening further. "No. It’s trying to beco sothing through ."
That difference settled heavily, and the space reacted again, bending slightly around them. The figure shifted forward without moving, aligning closer in a way that made the air feel thinner against his lungs.
Ariana stepped in front of him.
Kael reacted imdiately, his hand tightening as he tried to pull her back. "Ariana," he said, his voice firm, edged with urgency.
She didn’t move.
Her gaze stayed fixed ahead, her stance steady despite the pressure building around them. "If it’s using you, then it can reach
through you," she said quietly.
That landed harder than anything else.
Kael’s grip loosened slightly, not because he agreed, but because he understood what she was doing. His chest tightened as he realized she wasn’t stepping back anymore.
The figure reacted. For the first ti, its focus shifted between them.
Ariana felt it imdiately, her breath catching as the presence brushed against her. It wasn’t as strong as what Kael had felt, but it was enough to make her tense.
"It knows," she said.
Kael’s jaw tightened as his focus sharpened. "Then we end it."
The connection surged again, pressing inward instead of outward. The pressure in his chest spiked sharply, and his wolf rose fully, not in defense, but in control.
This ti, he didn’t let it guide him, even though he could feel it trying to align with him again. He stepped forward on his own instead, and the reaction ca instantly.
The figure destabilized again, its outline breaking at the edges as if his movent had interrupted sothing it needed. The space tightened around them, reacting faster now.
Ariana didn’t stop him. She stayed with him, her presence steady at his side.
The connection shifted again, but this ti Kael pushed through it instead of resisting. The pressure moved around him, bending as if it was being forced to change direction.
The figure flickered harder, its form breaking apart before pulling itself back together again.
Ariana saw it clearly, her breath uneven now. "It’s losing shape," she said.
Kael exhaled slowly, his focus narrowing further. "No. It’s being forced to choose."
The words settled into the space, and everything reacted at once.
The connection tightened sharply, the pressure in his chest spiking before stabilizing again. The figure held its position, no longer shifting, no longer adjusting.
It was deciding.
Ariana felt it at the sa mont, her grip tightening around his. "Kael..." she said, her voice lower now, grounding him.
He didn’t look at her, but he tightened his hold on her hand. "Stay with ," he said, his voice steady despite the pressure building around them.
She didn’t hesitate this ti.
Her fingers tightened around his in response, matching his certainty.
The figure moved again, but not toward him alone.
It moved toward both of them.
The reaction hit imdiately as the space around them shifted, no longer separating them but pulling them into the sa point. The pressure increased, and the stillness broke for the first ti.
Kael’s wolf surged, not to block it, but to hold its ground.
Ariana inhaled sharply, her body tensing as the connection brushed against her fully.
This ti, it didn’t hesitate. It recognized both of them.
Kael felt it clearly, the connection no longer centered on him alone. It expanded between them, not weakening, but becoming unstable in a way that changed everything.
Ariana’s voice dropped, steady but quiet. "It’s not choosing anymore."
Kael felt his chest tighten, but this ti he didn’t hesitate.
"Then we do," he said.
The figure held its place ahead of them as the space around it stilled, not empty but focused. Everything within the domain seed to draw inward, as if it was waiting for what would happen next.
And for the first ti, nothing moved forward on its own.
Everything waited for them to decide how it would end.
