Sylvia’s brows drew together as she looked at the hemisphere in Celia’s hand, her mind already moving ahead of the mont, refusing to accept it at face value. "There has to be another way," she said, her tone firm in the way it got when sothing didn’t sit right with her and she wasn’t ready to let it sit.
Gideon nodded, folding his arms as he exhaled slowly. "That round was brutal," he said, glancing between Nova and Celia. "There’s no way they’d make it completely absolute. There should be so kind of alternative, sothing we haven’t been told yet."
Celia shook her head before he could go any further.
Her grip around the hemisphere tightened slightly, her gaze still lowered. "No," she said quietly, and the finality in her voice cut through the speculation cleanly. "We didn’t make it. That’s all there is to it."
She walked to Sylvia then and hugged her, burying her head against her shoulder without another word. Sylvia held her there without hesitation, one hand moving to her back, slow and steady.
Nobody else said anything.
Nova let out a small breath after a mont, rubbing the back of his neck before pushing a smile onto his face. It was the kind of smile that was clearly working harder than it should have to be. "Guess this is where we stop," he said, keeping his tone as light as he could manage while the edge beneath it showed anyway.
"We couldn’t pull it off this ti. But you guys made it through, right? That’s what matters." He glanced up briefly, the smile still there but sitting fragile on his face. "We’ll cheer from the sidelines for the next round."
Lucas opened his mouth, sothing already forming —
"Congratulations to all cadets who successfully secured a complete sphere and cleared the first round."
The voice ca across the field with the particular quality that Vance’s voice had carrying the kind that didn’t need volu to reach everywhere. Everyone turned.
Vance stood at the center of the field, his presence doing what it always did to a crowd. His gaze moved across the gathered cadets. "You have all been tested not only in strength but in thinking and adaptability," he continued. "Those who stand here with completed spheres have proven their capability to move forward."
He stepped aside.
Beatrice moved forward, and the faint smile on her lips carried sothing warr than his expression had. "Let’s make this official," she said, her voice lighter but reaching just as far. "Every cadet who ford a complete sphere has qualified for the final sester examinations. You’ve earned your place — so take a mont to actually acknowledge that."
Murmurs moved through the crowd. So relieved, so proud, so still processing what it ant for them.
Behind them, cadets with incomplete hemispheres had lowered their heads.
Beatrice’s gaze moved to them.
"But," she said, and the single word brought the murmurs to a stop, "this is not where the tournant ends."
Everyone was listening now.
Her eyes swept across those still holding hemispheres, her smile sharpening just slightly at the edges. "If you’re standing there with half of what was needed, you’re closer than you think," she said. "This round was never designed to shut anyone out completely. It was designed to see how far you’d go — and how you respond when you fall short."
She let that breathe for a mont before she continued.
"Any cadet still in possession of an intact hemisphere will be given another opportunity in the second round. A chance to prove you belong here just as much as anyone else who qualified."
The effect moved through the crowd imdiately.
Heads that had been down ca up. Shoulders that had dropped straightened again. The heaviness that had been sitting over the field shifted into sothing else entirely, and the space it left behind felt considerably easier to breathe in.
Nova stood completely still for a second.
He blinked once. Then again. Like he was running the words back through his head to make sure they’d arrived correctly.
Then it hit him.
The dullness in his face vanished so completely it was almost startling, the grin ca back wide and imdiate, his fist clenching at his side as he straightened up to his full height. "That’s MORE like it!" he said, loud enough that the cadets nearby glanced over. "Alright — I’m in. This ti I’m not ssing anything up, not a single thing, we are getting through this round—"
Celia let out a breath she’d been holding without realizing it, her shoulders easing as sothing loosened in her expression. "That’s a relief," she murmured, her composure returning quietly, like water settling after sothing disturbed it.
Gideon watched Nova for a mont with the patient expression of soone observing a very predictable weather pattern. "There he is," he said dryly. "I was starting to wonder how long it would take."
"Shut it! you don’t know how big of a relief it is," Nova shot back imdiately, throwing him a look that was already carrying its usual energy. "Everyone’s allowed a second."
"Nobody argued with that."
"Good."
Beatrice clapped her hands once, drawing focus back without effort. "Now that everyone’s had a mont," she said smoothly, "let’s move on. Ti to explain what the second round actually requires."
The field quieted and gave her its full attention.
"This next phase wouldn’t be anything bout Force actually," she continued, her gaze moving across the cadets. "It’s about how well you think when things stop going your way. Pressure, confusion, limited ti — how you respond to those will determine your performance here." She paused just long enough for it to settle properly. "The second round will be conducted in teams of five. Each team will operate with defined roles — a Team Leader to take command, a Strategist to plan your approach, an Observer to track and assess surroundings, a Coordinator to manage execution, and an Assistant to support wherever needed."
A ripple moved through the crowd as cadets began processing it, so already glancing sideways at each other, quietly asuring who fit where.
"And before any assumptions form," Beatrice added, her tone sharpening just slightly, "this round is not limited to cadets who failed to complete a sphere. Those who already qualified may also participate. Performing well here will directly influence your standing in the final sester rankings."
