Earlier... Two hours and Thirty Minutes before Selene’s Arrival at Apex Hotel
Hidden Invisible Bunker in the Woods.
Kurtis POV
I knew sending Selene to greet the so-called emissaries from the West – Wild Hunt Pack was a huge risk but we were out of options. To , this mission was more than securing Moon Whisper territories, the Eastern Coalition and pledging my allegiance to the Lycan King Noah – Xavier’s Uncle because I didn’t think it was necessary but had only done it on Xavier’s insistence... it was a personal mission for .
Two years ago, I had gone against my principle by killing an innocent man and until I avenged his death, my conscience would not let rest. The path I had chosen for myself was clear... it was distinct... from the day my father had killed my mother in one of his drunken states, I couldn’t stand the abuse anymore. That wasn’t all, he rejected and made a fugitive... I had sworn to beco a god by myself. I wasn’t going to be embroiled in the fiasco that everyone seed to have with the moon goddess.
I wasn’t going to let good people die or punish a child that didn’t deserve death like the moon goddess. Neither will I stay mute when people need my help. I was going to beco a god...love and provide for my people and most importantly, make them independent of . I wanted them to think on their feet, and make decisions without needing to ask for help.
When my dad used to hit my mother all the ti and and my siblings, she was afraid to leave... won without husbands were considered as good as rogues and to make it worse, she was an Alpha’s wife. The ridicule and the woe that would have co to her if she had done that would have been worse than dying in my father’s hand.
What was more, I watched her for nearly fifteen years of my life going from one moon goddess shrine to another... praying and making sacrifices for them to change her husband and make him love her. She even went as far as communing with Sirens, taking potions and things she would slip into his food. Most of them worked for a while... but after it got exhausted, my dad would go back to the monster he was while my mom would resu her role as a punching bag.
She couldn’t leave... she relied so much on the moon goddess and stupid laws that forbade her from leaving her mate and what did she get in return... death. The world I dread of was one without all the old laws and the religion of the moon goddess which seed to hem people in and to say the truth... the only people and persons that could help in actualizing this goal were Xavier and Selene.
They were products of the ’Dark Moon’ – the birth of the ’Dark Moon’ changed a lot of things in the history of the mythical world and from all the studies and travels I’ve made all these years... if I need a change... I needed the true agent and catalyst of change.
I needed to invoke the powers that had co from the ’Dark Moon’ on the day of Selene’s and Xavier’s birth, the aura of the ’Blood Moon’ from the birth of their children and my strength and discernnt from being born ’On the Eve of the Dark Moon’. The only way we could activate all of these deposits in us was to be together. The study didn’t show how it could be done; it had stated only:
If their paths can be changed... their destinies can no longer be detected by the order of the moon goddess and then there will be a change.
So far, their paths have changed drastically... and they were oblivious to how much they had their lives in their hands now. I couldn’t tell them that too. The bottom line was, that I needed Xavier and his family to be together.
I would build a world where there will be no tears.
So, I needed to fix this minor lapse. The only way to uncover who was truly behind everything was an insider – soone they would never suspect.
Which is why, I insisted on being in charge of her security. I was taking every possible precaution before allowing her to et with those so-called emissaries. I had gone to great lengths to make sure that the dress she would put on was bulletproof.
"Kurtis," I heard Selene call out from outside of the tent.
I had forgotten to ask my n to let her co through. Quickly, I jumped out of the tent and ran out.
"She’s here to see ," I instructed them and imdiately they let her go. Pulling her into the invisible tent, I could see her mouth had hung open as we entered.
"No way!" she exclaid "And there I was thinking that it was strange for your n to be standing in the middle of nowhere. So, this is invisible huh?"
"Yes," I gave her what I thought was a smile. At this point, she was doing a favour, so I wanted to be on her good side. "Co quickly, we don’t have all the ti," I tell her,".
She nods and cos towards . I pulled out her dress from the box it was and pointed her to a screen to change behind it. One of the perks of my so many travels was the knowledge of almost everything I gathered from mostly the human world. They had an unbelievably pool of talented people who would do anything if you had enough money to pay.
"All done," she said after a few minutes as she ca out of the changing screen. I beckoned her to co to the table which had an array of disguised devices which she would be going in with.
"Give your hand," I said gruffly, stretching my hand to grasp her right hand as I slipped on a matching pink bracelet. "This bracelet may look like a simple piece of jewelry but it’s actually a powerful tracking beacon and the good part is, it cannot co off. Once it registers on you like now, it won’t co off," I explained fastening it around her wrist "So, no matter where you go, we’ll be able to monitor your location,".
Her brows furrowed at it but she remained silent. So, I moved on to the next item. It was a sleek hand mirror compact.
"This would go inside your bag as part of your makeup kit," I told her and twisted the top to reveal a hollow interior. "Inside there is a microscopic listening device and I have already set it. It will activate and transmit any audio to our receivers her," I demonstrated by speaking into it, my voice coming through the small speaker I had set up.
Next, I handed her a beautifully decorated hair comb made with polished wood. "This isn’t just for keeping your hair tidy. The teeth is coated in a potent sedative that will instantly destabilize anyone once you jab it at them. Aim for key points like the neck, stomach... just anyplace you know that has blood flowing directly to the heart or brain,".
Her eyes widened slightly at that. "You said it was going to be an easy job. Why are you arming ?"
"C’mon Selene, don’t be naïve. You cannot control eventualities like this, that’s why I want you to be prepared at all tis,".
She hesitated for a minute before accepting the comb. Still from the table, I picked up a glassy, shiny compact filled with brown powder, only it wasn’t brown powder.
"This is thermite. Pour it into any closed doorway or what not, and it’ll burn through a wall, or even tal giving you an escape route. In a situation where your life will be under threat, the compact will begin to beep, only you can hear the beeping noise and then, you should bring it out and follow any direction that it beeps twice rapidly. When you break through the wall or tal, we’ll be waiting to take you ho, okay?"
She nodded.
Finally, I showed her a simple tube of what looked like an ordinary lipstick. "This looks like an ordinary lipstick but it’s a mini-gun. Just aim at whover is your target and push the bottom lightly. The tip gets exposed to air and after then seconds, it’ll shoot an explosion enough to kill whover it’s aid at. But in those ten seconds, make sure you’re ducking or sothing...".
After we finished arranging everything inside the lightweight handbag, I tried to gauge her emotions but she had an impassive look on her face, making wonder what she was thinking.
"Kurtis," she finally spoke up "I understand the need for protection but I truly hope it doesn’t co to using any of these..." she trailed off "Extre asures. You assured it was just a simple case of playing a sad wife and try to et King Tanner and sothing like that. Did the plans change? Is there sothing I should know that you’re not telling ?"
My heart shifted with guilt that I was brazenly telling her lies but I looked at her square in the eyes "The mission hasn’t change. I am just trying to make sure you’re safe and more than anything, your life is the priority,".
She stared at for a while before giving a solemn nod of acceptance. "I would try to believe you then. When I want in trouble, I’ll simply mind link you,".
"Mind link ?" I scoffed "That’s not possible. We’re not connected in anyway neither have we done the linking ritual,".
"I can link up with anyone I want by simply picturing them in my head and don’t worry, I don’t need to go full – dark pupils and what not... usually no one can tell when I am mind linking,".
"Wow! That’s cool," I nodded "And effective. I’ll be ready for when you creep into my thoughts,".
An awkward silence settled in a for few seconds before I rembered her transport must have arrived in front of the pack house.
"Hurry now, Selene... your car should be in front of the pack house waiting for you. good luck,".
She nodded, picked up her handbag and headed for the door. As she left, my chest tightened with guilt but there was nothing I could do except protect her from this end.
She was almost at the door when I called out to her. "Selene!"
She turned, flashing a nervous stare "What?"
I wanted to ask her if she was nervous and maybe soothe her a bit but I heard myself say "If you sense anything amiss or find yourself in a life-threatening situation. Do not hesitate... contact imdiately and try to escape. We’ll always be on standby for you,".
"Don’t worry, Kurtis," she gave a bright smile "I won’t die yet... at least not today,".
