Xavier POV
I watched my phone ring for the thousandth ti today, it was my mom and she was getting on my nerves. Sohow, she got to know about the eting with Noah yesterday and has been calling non-stop. It wasn’t helping that Jared and the rest of the Alphas had already gone ho and he was already laying ground rules without my presence already. I had to even send Lucius to go in my stead.
"You’ll wear out the ground if you keep pacing like that and you’re distracting too," Kurtis sighed looking up from his laptop. "I’m trying to work here, could you stop being so obvious? Please...".
"I don’t have ti to deal with you right now, Kurtis," I said and continued pacing, I have to co up with a plan... or sothing... anything that would make Noah revoke his decisions. Making Jared as the leader of our Coalition was suicidal.
"Did you get Selene to talk to him again? Or maybe you could pick your mom’s call and go through her? It would be easier I think and Noah respects her to an extent too. Why are you hesitating? If I had a mom, I tell you, I would be on her laps crying like a baby until she gets her brother to do what I want,".
"Stop talking, nonsense, Kurtis!" I sighed staring at my phone again. I was scrolling at the numbers I had on it, trying to see if there was anyone, I could send to Noah again. He wasn’t a difficult person, I knew that much and no matter how angry he is, he would never desert or turn his back on .
There was knock from outside, a montary pause before the door was pushed open and Reid – Noah’s Beta ca through. When I saw him, I gathered myself, trying to still the way my heart was pounding as I stared at him. What did he want now.
"Alpha!" his gaze darted to "His Majesty would give you audience as soon as he’s done with his counselling session this morning. You’re to wait for him in his garden," he ca forward and pointed a key towards "Make sure you’re not tardy because he would not wait for you. So, when you feel is convenient for you, that is the key, let yourself into the garden,".
"Oh!" my lips rounded with surprise; I was at loss for words at the suddenness of his acceptance. "Thank you so much and thank his majesty for but could you give a rough guess as to when he finishes with his counselling session. It won’t make sense if I stay all day waiting for him not knowing when he would co exactly,".
"That I do not know," Reid said quietly watching with amusent. "I thought you were so desperate to see the King, why are you complaining now? Waiting for him a few minutes or maybe hours shouldn’t be a problem. Do you think you deserve to see him not after everything you’ve done?"
I was taken aback. First, I and Reid didn’t have so much in common. To , he was just Noah’s Beta and was equally as protective as Lucius was to and we had a polite relationship and try as much as possible not to cross boundaries. It has been working for us so far, I didn’t understand why he would speak to in that manner.
"Watch it, Reid!" I scoffed with a cold smile on my face "Don’t speak to in that manner. If there’s sothing I have done wrong, wouldn’t it be better you tell and have atone for my wrongdoings that to speak in ambiguously. What have I done to the King again?"
"You stole his peace, Xavier," Reid walked up to , overshadowing with his tall from "From the monts you walked in here, a lot of things have happened in their marriage. They were getting along with each other, until you ca. Did you have to co in the first place? I know the girls are your kids but coming to make it obvious with your presence... You should be ashad of yourself for treating a family like that,".
"What!" I exclaid turning to Kurtis who rolled his eyes and shook his head mouthing that I let it be but I felt it was a direct sabotage to my personality. "How about , Reid?" I said moving closer to him "I haven’t for once complained about how my mate was taken away from without giving a chance to right my wrongs. Besides, I ca to the pack for a different issue and I would not apologize to you for that,".
"Always so full of yourself, Xavier," Reid chuckled "Anyways, take care of that key and keep living in your illusions," he slapped a hand on my shoulders then turned on his feet and left. I didn’t know if I was angry or surprised. I turned to Kurtis whose head was already buried in front of the system, it didn’t look like he was in the mood to converse. Taking a deep, calming breath I walked out of the room.
I hadn’t moved ten steps when I spotted my mother marching down the corridor towards Kurtis’s office to co look for of course and worse of all it was too late to hide because she has already seen . Stilling myself for the barrage of question that will follow next, I continued towards her as soon as we got close enough, she started.
"So, you had to make fly out to co talk to you, Xavier Steele... have you forgotten I am your mother? Why are you acting like you don’t know that I could have been in a life-or-death situation and my only child wasn’t coming to the phone,".
"I already told you mom that I am fine and you didn’t have to co here. I was going to take the calls eventually, only that I’ve been busy. So, maybe we could have this conversation another ti,".
"So, what happens to the family doesn’t concern you?" her voice went a notch higher, a clear sign that she was angry "Do you know what that snake of a woman did to your grandfather? And she’s clearly the reason why Noah wants to suddenly go against his family. I am trying...".
"Selene did nothing, mom," I stopped her midsentence reaching for her hand as I took her to Kurtis’s office. He was about to complain but when he saw my mom, he stayed put. After shutting the door, I turned to face her. "I don’t know what Grand Pa told you but you cannot repeatedly keep provoking or pushing soone to the wall and expect the person not to react. That is what you all have been doing to Selene for a while and she has endured it like the elegant woman she is. What more do you want from her?"
"To leave our family alone," My mom bristled "To leave you and your uncle alone. Ever since she ca into our lives it has been from one problem to another. I’ve tried to understand, to see things from your point of views but everything she gives a reason to hate her. I hate her so much!" she cried.
"If Selene leaves then I’ll die, mom. She’s the reason I am well and talking to you. Fine, I agree that things beca rough between and Noah but it’s not her fault. Selene is the real victims and not us and can you just stop already with all the gaslighting and for once appreciate and see her an important part of us. You can’t keep gaslighting and acting like she doesn’t exist, Mom. She is important to ... she’s the mother of my children and I plan to keep her in our lives for as long as possible,".
"I can’t believe you, Xavier!" she laughed dryly "Fine, if you do not see reasons with to let her go. We’ll look for a way to keep you healthy, anyways, if you don’t believe , then I guess this video might convince you," she pulled out her phone from her back and swiped through it until she sees what she’s looking for then points it in my direction.
Sighing, I took the phone from her. It was a recorded clip of my grandfather walking up to Selene who was standing in front of the Luna’s office, she had a wistful smile on her face as she stared blankly. After a while, she turns to leave and my grandfather walks up to her.
I watched as she wore a cautious look then turned to him, she was desperately trying to look brave. "To what do I owe the pleasure?" she asked taking a step backwatds.
"You want to pit my son against , Selene. My son has never gone against my wish since he was bron gut you had the guts to poison his heart against , against the elders of this pack. Do you know what you have done?"
"Noah is a grown man, your majesty," she said with a amused smile "He doesn’t need to listen to to do the right thing plus you should be taking it up to your son and not with ,".
His eyes dimd with fury as her words registered, I cringed as he raised his hand to strike her but suddenly Selene suspended his hands in the air, as she glared at him.
"Don’t you dare, Leonard, if you do not have a death wish!"
"You dare call by my na!" my grandfather fud and before Selene could notice, he raised his free hand and slapped her across her cheek. The impact was so hard that she staggered backwards and nearly fell. Instead of apologizing for his actions, he followed after her "You have 24 hours to go back to Noah and ask him to retract his words concerning the Luna office. You don’t know , Selene... I am not one to deal with,".
When he was close enough to her, Selene suddenly straightened and without warning slapped him too across the cheek. The video ended.
