Selene POV
For the first ti since Noah’s pronouncents began, I noticed a reaction from Xavier. His jaw tensed as his eyes bore through Noah with a heated intensity that I was afraid he was going to fight or sothing. And that was all... despite all the other Alphas urging him to say sothing, Xavier remained calm.
Noah on the other hand seed unperturbed as he returned to his seat. When he settled, he turned to fully address the entire hall once more.
"Let this serve as a final reminder to you all," he called out, his voice ringing with both fear and respect. "The act has co into play effectively from this very mont and anyone found wanting will be punished regardless of their status. Our prosperity and continuance as a people is rotted in our faithfulness to all the laws and traditions handed down to us from one generation to another. To willfully defy, or outrightly disregard these foundations is to laugh a the legacies we all share,".
His gaze settled back on Xavier in a pointed look that lasted for a few seconds before he continued "The path forward should be one of unity, wisdom and adherence to our ways. Not rash, individualistic actions that will further fray the ties that bind us all. I could talk more and on but we’ll stop the eting here for today so that you all can arrive at your packs in good ti," he gave a nod and snapped his fingers. Imdiately, the doors of the hall opened.
I watched as the Alphas began rising and shuffling out of the hall in hushed murmurs, they were still surprised at Noah’s verdict. As the last person left leaving and Noah in the hall, I stole a side glance at Noah’s profile as he stared blankly into space wondering if he was regretting all the verdicts he passed today or if he was truly driven by the desire to uphold the so-called laws and traditions which he didn’t anchor himself.
Although I couldn’t read his mind, I was so sure that Noah for the first ti had thrown down his gauntlet to Xavier, daring him to pick it up and fight him. All along, it was just a squabble between an uncle and his nephew but now... it was clear that it had moved beyond that.
"Are you ready to go?" his voice pierced into my thoughts.
I nodded wordlessly and rose to my feet following after him as he exited the hall towards the next eting with the pack elders. I didn’t know if I could face the pack elders right now, especially after the bone-chilling event I had just witnessed. Should I ask Noah to reschedule the eting? I doubt he would listen to but it was worth a shot.
I sprinted lightly catching up with him. When I was closer, I took several breaths before I ventured gently "Can you do a favour dear?"
"No!" he called out behind his shoulders "It’s too late to cancel the eting, Selene. These n had a lot of plans for today but had to cancel it to suit your schedule. The best thing you can do is to honour the invitation. It is all for you and not for them or even for . So, no, I will not cancel it. Hurry up, I want us to be seated before they start arriving,".
Rolling my eyes with annoyance, I followed behind him practically running until we got to the hall. We were the first to arrive. This ti, instead of sitting on a raised platform like the other hall, Noah sat at a box in the middle of the room.
"That’s where you’ll be talking to the elders from. Rember to think carefully before you answer any questions asked because these n are not only smart, ordinarily, they would never approve of giving a woman power so they would ask you tough questions and maybe intimidate you at so point. You just need to stand your ground,".
"Okay!’ I nodded fighting the despair that was slowly creeping into my heart. "How about you Noah, would you give a woman power or do you stand with the pack elders and the officials?"
He stared at for a while without saying anything that I thought he wouldn’t answer the question. Almost when I had given up, he shook his head and murmured "I just want to make you happy, Selene...I swear on the moon that I will give you anything that you want... I will not withhold because, in the next couple of days, I’m going to be selfish and would damn every consequence,".
An uneasy knot settled on my stomach "What are you talking about?" I ventured looking at him strangely.
He took several steps towards , his eyes were as cold as ice even the hands he placed on my shoulders felt cold to making shudder inwardly "I’m going to keep sleeping with Brooke for starters. Maybe things might change after the therapy but I’ve gone so long without getting sexual pleasure and since you’re frigid, I don’t want us arguing about things like that, so... I am telling you now,".
It seed as if soone threw a hamr to my heart and it shattered into a thousand pieces at my feet as he finished speaking but I maintained my composure refusing to crumble under the weight of his decision.
"So, you’re going to throw your indiscretions at my face and without fear?" I laughed dryly "But the thing is, why are you telling ? Are you asking for my permission?"
"No!" he shook his head "I’m only informing you so that you don’t go around harassing Brooke. If she makes happier than I already feel when I’m with her, I might just make her my consort and if she bears an heir..." he shrugged "A lot of things might change but I pray that it doesn’t change so much, it’ll be too much punishnt considering you left your cheating mate only to end up with another one,".
I was stupefied at the words coming out from Noah. His pupils weren’t dilated, neither did he sll of alcohol... this man was sober and sane. "What are you, Noah? You’re not the man I married?"
"Well, you’ve turned into a monster, Selene... Into a lying, cheating monster. I was so surprised I was able to pull off that act with Janet a while ago. I should beco an actor, eh?Le What do you think?" he laughed.
"No, Noah!" I took another step towards him closing the space between us "You made yourself. Cheating is a decision and you made that yourself. You cannot tell that going a few days, weeks... without sex pushed you into another woman’s arms? Admit it, you’ve always wanted to do it... Who knows, it might also be a family trait...so you best get that checked,".
"Don’t do this Selene!" he hissed, "I could see the rage in his eyes "I loved you... so much that I was willing to do any fucking thing for you but you treated like I was so tool, how is that fair? You repeatedly made intimacy in every form with you an uphill task and I was willing to bear it. You cannot pretend that you didn’t contribute to making the person I am now!"
