Selene POV
After I finished with Conrad, with the purse firmly clenched in my hands, I walked down the hall towards the quarters where Kurtis was staying. As I passed by a group of maids huddled in one corner, their voices floated to .
"It’ll be the full blood moon soon, at least that’s what the Priestess said and it’ll happen maybe three days from today, do you think it’ll be the end of the world this ti around? The last ti the Full Blood Moon was seen, a lot of tragic things ended up happening," one of the maids said.
"I hope not," the other cried "I still have a lot to do. I am yet to get married; I haven’t even fallen in love yet and we’re still stuck with a lot of duties. But are you sure that the world will end?"
"I don’t know," the third one sighed "But either way, I’ll be glad that I’ll finally et with my parents and.." she trailed off as our gaze t and she lowered her head, bowing with respect. "Good afternoon, Your Majesty," she mumbled. Her friends by this ti have all recovered and they all copied her movents.
I gave them a slight nod, acknowledging their greeting before moving on. Whether the world would end on that day or not, it was going to be the day of my liberation for both I and the girls. I started humming a tone until I got to the space where Noah had given Kurtis to set up a mini office for the duration of this journey.
I knocked thrice and then ushered myself into the room. When I entered, Kurtis was lying on the sofa in the room, eyes closed and a hand thrown over his face. You could see pure exhaustion on his face as he snored gently. Instinctively, I removed my phone from my pockets and took several snapshots of him sleeping, giggling at how devasted he’d look when I showed him later.
I walked around the office smoothly trying not to make any noise. Even now, Kurtis was still a neat freak as he was back then. When the moon priestess died and he had to take care of in those few months before Noah ca, we used to clash a lot. He was a neat picker and I was neat too but not as extre as he was.
Right now, on the big mahogany desk, all the pens are arranged according to the sizes, types and at specific angles. His desk was so neat that you’d think nothing could be done on it and the table was bare except for the pen holder and the computer on it. He loved his space.
Seating on his chair, I twirled around severally, trying not to think of anything. On my third twirl, my eyes landed on a piece of paper sticking out from the bottom part of the drawer set. Knowing who Kurtis was, he would go berserk, if he woke up and saw this. I ca down from the chair, and went all the way to the floor, kneeling since I could not bend and tried to open the drawer.
I didn’t know if it was because of the part that was sticking out, it was so difficult to pull out at first but after several tries and heaves, it finally gave way throwing backwards. I yelped in surprise and clamped on my mouth thinking I must have awoken Kurtis but when I peeped towards him, he was still sleeping soundly.
"What’s his deal?" I murmured to myself because it was so unlike him to sleep like that. He was a light sleeper. Anyway, I gathered the files that had scattered from the impact of the sudden push and started arranging them head-to-head. As I was done, my eyes flitted to the docunt that had been stuck. The corner was bent to show it was that docunt and on it was written boldly, PLAN.
I picked it up and stared at the docunt for the longest ti, contemplating if I should go ahead and open it or not. It wasn’t in my manner to peek through people’s things like this because I hated it so much. But there was sothing about how ominous the words looked on the front page and with each second, my curiosity kept increasing.
"I’ll just open one random page and read," I said to myself. Casting a wary glance towards Kurtis, I opened a random page and glanced at it. My heart nearly stopped when I saw a picture of and several straight-arrowed lines drawn towards with tasks I was supposed to do. One of them was discovering the impostor in Tanner’s place.
And then there was another one, playing a final role in tearing Noah and Xavier apart. My hands trembled as I read the rest of the information on that page, trembling, I turned the next page and saw it was another person’s picture. Shakily, I reached for my phone on the desk and hurriedly snapped a picture trying to calm the shaking tremors coursing through .
After that, I replaced the file and closed the drawer, just as I settled on the chair and closed my eyes to regain myself, the door opened and Xavier lood at the entrance. His eyes widened with surprise when he saw and imdiately, they darted towards Kurtis and back to .
"What’s going on here?" he asked entering the office "And why is he still sleeping? His n won’t take orders from no one else except him. He just bolted and left everything for . The Kings will be arriving soon and we’ve done nothing,".
"What!" I sprang to my feet as I rushed to the sofa "I ca in and saw him sleeping. I thought maybe it was because he wanted to rest. How long has he been out from the last ti you checked?" I asked.
"Maybe like four hours ago. The last I heard of him was he was going to see Noah or sothing in that line. The bottom line is everything has been brought to a halt with him not being available and...".
"I can’t believe you right now, Xavier!" I scoffed shaking my head in disbelief. "Your friend is out... like we don’t even know if he’s alive or dead right now and you’re worried about the Kings arrival. These years didn’t take the selfishness out of you. gosh! I can’t believe you!" I hissed and dropped to my knees beside him.
Gently, I touched his brow and withdrew my hand quickly "He’s burning up," I announced with fear. "goddess! Fetch a maid right now!" I scread at Xavier.
For a few minutes, he stood there confused and then I shouted at him before he ran out of the room. I reached for his wrist, trying to check his pulse and I couldn’t get a beat. From the way he was burning up, it must have been going on for long. Quickly, I ran to the jug of water on the table at one corner of the room fished out what looked like a face towel on the sofa and then soaked it inside the jug of water.
Quickly, I placed one end on his forehead, undid the first three buttons on his shirt and started wiping his neck with the damp towel. If we didn’t bring the fever under control, he might run mad and I cannot afford for anything to happen right now. It’ll ss up with our plans. I was soaking and cleaning his body simultaneously while wondering where Xavier had gone when the door suddenly opened.
"Quick! Go to the kitchen and ask them for a bowl of cold water and also so slling salts. We need to..." a familiar scent wafted up to my nostrils making the jar of water slip off my hand and clatter to the ground as I turned.
"Y-You’re here!" I stuttered moving backwards "H-How are you here?" I accused.
"You weren’t replying to nor taking my ssages and I got impatient. So, I decided to co here. What? Why are you scared to see ? Aren’t you happy to see ? I thought you’d be delirious with joy especially now?"
"I told you last ti that I cannot continue eting with you at least for now. I have a lot of eyes on plus it’s been hectic for a while now. How did you get past the gates?" I asked staring at him.
"Easy," he chuckled "I just used the face of a random guard but anyways, I’ll leave soon because I hate to co in this sort of disguise but if you don’t have a solution by next ti, I’ll have to co in your visual,".
"You have to leave now," I said staring at the door with unease "I have a plan and all I need is for you to be patient. In a few days from now, you’ll be able to co and go as you please. I’ve been able to convince him to set up the Luna’s office, so it’ll be of help to us at least,".
He snickered and tapped at the back of his hand before mouthing "Tick Tock! Hurry up, Selene... You don’t have all the ti. Eh... ti is your enemy. You do not belong in this world, need I remind you!"
"I understand," I nodded.
He gave one last once over and started for the door when he turned back and ran to Kurtis grabbing his hand and then with a smug smile said to "This one was poisoned and I’m afraid he won’t make it back. I wonder what kind of pact he’d make because he’s struggling to go,".
"No!" I shook my head and hurried to Kurtis. He seed to be burning up thrice as fast now. "He cannot die now. He’s part of the big plan. Please, spare his life or else, I won’t be able to keep to my end of the bargain,".
"Werewolves!" he hissed "Are you threatening now?"
"I’m just saying. If the one thing you desire the most is what you told then you wouldn’t want to let him die. He’s vital and you know it,".
He gave a long stare and then sighed "Fine! But you should be careful of him too, his heart is dark and almost unreadable. But I think he has a soft spot for you. Have them pound two persimmons. Feed him the liquid, he’ll be fine but only for a limited ti. The full moon will be out in three days, let him go for a run, it’ll expel all the deposits of the poison and you should too. You’re making your wolf lazy,".
"Thank you so much," I smiled at him. So days, he’s kind, other days, he’s as ruthless as his position, Kragen.
Yeah! Maybe another day I will tell the story of how I made a pact with the King of the underworld Fenrir Hellfang also known as Kragen but for now, let’s save Kurtis.
