Chapter 38 : The Specious Mask
“You suddenly appeared and had a fight with Hitana.”
In the room with dim lighting, Mingfuluo, lying on the bed leaning against Anselm’s chest, closed her eyes and asked: “Why?”
“To give a reason why Faust would pay attention to Fenrir.” Anselm gently kneaded Mingfuluo’s tender cheeks, “It’s very normal for a legendary adventurer to be interested in a successor with extraordinary talent…… isn't it.”
Anselm had concealed Marina’s whereabouts. Marina definitely couldn't hide herself while working under Hitana.
And using Marina as a thread to string Faust and Fenrir together……
A mysterious and unpredictable top powerhouse, a ticulous mortal servant, and a stupid girl with an abnormally strong sense of violent justice.
Such a combination indeed gave people a rather subtle sense of déjà vu.
So Anselm indeed needed to give a reason for Marina appearing by Hitana’s side.
Sowhat forced, but not too forced——as long as Fenrir could demonstrate power matching Faust’s “expectation”, then it wouldn't be counted as forced.
“Just this?”
Mingfuluo, slowly burying her head in Anselm’s neck and gently breathing his scent, said with a quiet tone.
Anselm tilted his head slightly, resting his chin on Mingfuluo’s head: “Then what else does Aluo think there is?”
“Don't answer a question with a question!”
Mingfuluo gently headbutted Anselm, then fell into silence again.
“……Forget it, nothing.”
Mingfuluo, who always spoke her mind directly, unexpectedly chose to avoid it at this mont.
She rubbed against Anselm’s neck, closed her eyes and murmured: “Sleep, accompany in the workshop tomorrow.”
Anselm smiled and stroked Mingfuluo’s soft hair, hugging her to sink into sleep.
The lights went out, the night was silent.
Mingfuluo, who had already detached from being a normal life form, actually didn't need sleep, but at this mont she really slept deeply and sweetly——every night sleeping in Anselm’s arms was like this.
Only tonight, the person who still retained the ability to sleep opened his eyes in the darkness.
He gently released Mingfuluo, stroked that tender and silky cheek, then got out of bed and walked to the window. With a sway of his figure, he disappeared without a trace, only the curtains swaying slightly.
The streets under the deep dark night were not pitch black.
Even though it was late at night, both sides of the road still flashed with lights and colors that made people fall into an illusion…… That Mr. Secretary ultimately didn't have Mibaita’s ability.
After the real Mibaita died, due to the influx of a large number of adventurers, the order of Strife Fortress’s Upper District was gradually disintegrating.
And since the Upper District was like this, the Lower District was naturally even more unbearable.
Guys who took too many prohibited drugs swaying on the street, delirious; multiple bodies entangled in dark alleys; passersby hurrying with the sll of blood drifting from their bodies; weird crows with pitch-black eyes skimming low……
Most importantly, this crow landed on Anselm’s shoulder.
“My Lord.”
A low and hoarse voice sounded in Anselm’s mind: “Dragon Tongue Grand Duke has already received the news that you will clash with Miss Hitana.”
“Quite fast.” Anselm smiled, seemingly walking aimlessly on the street.
The crow pecked its sleek feathers and continued: “He seems to be planning to lure a giant dragon to Strife Fortress.”
“Oh?”
This intelligence made Anselm slightly surprised. He glanced at the crow on his shoulder and raised his eyebrows slightly:
“He really dares?”
“The shadow you left on him three years ago is not small.”
Anselm turned sideways to avoid a disheveled woman with a foolish smile on her face stumbling to hug him, and replied at the sa ti: “But if it’s just this news, there’s no need for you to co personally, Raven.”
The crow’s na was Raven. Clearly the controller of [Shadow Swamp], it didn't give itself a na that sounded quite graceful and noble like Rhine.
“Bone-Snake has repeatedly advised , hoping I will deal with your secretary as soon as possible.”
Raven’s outspokenness was sothing the vast majority of people following Anselm couldn't achieve. Rhine, that delicate and cautious cat, would absolutely never say the word “deal with” about Marina to Anselm’s face.
Anselm couldn't help laughing: “Think she threatens [Shadow Swamp]?”
“If you can add a helping hand, I will be very happy.”
Raven responded calmly. anwhile, a scream suddenly ca from behind Anselm.
Behind him, a drunken middle-aged man happily hugged the woman who just bumped into Anselm wanting to hug him.
As a result, his neck was bitten off by that delirious woman, blood spraying.
Reason? The woman’s crazed and chaotic eyes——eyes that were either drugged too much or broken, were the best reason.
“But according to the psychological assessnt submitted by Bone-Snake.” Raven shook its wings gently, “Your secretary, currently cannot yet bear such a heavy responsibility.”
“Hmm…… Marina probably won't approve of this assessnt.”
Raven glanced at Anselm and said very honestly: “You also seem not to approve much.”
The young Hydra couldn't help laughing out loud. Mixed in his laughter was the sound of bones breaking from a beast chewing flesh not far away.
Anselm tilted his head slightly, looking at Raven: “Am I very partial to her?”
“Judging from the current situation, yes.” Raven nodded, “You gave her excessive preferential treatnt and help.”
“Most importantly, we cannot find a reason——a reason why you would give her such preferential treatnt and help.”
Marina Lansmarlos, did she have any extrely special ability, special enough to make Anselm look at her so differently?
From Raven’s perspective, the answer was no.
It wasn't that she had no talent, but her talent couldn't compare with Anselm’s favor.
What kind of talent should be worth Anselm spending effort and investing his mind?
Undoubtedly, only Hitana’s martial talent that swept everything, and Mingfuluo’s constructive talent that transcended the era, were worthy of Anselm doing this.
But Marina didn't have it.
Not only did she not have these abilities, she also…… wasn't special enough.
If Anselm wanted, Raven could find no less than twenty people from the entire Empire within a week whose conditions, qualifications, and natural endownts were almost the sa as Marina’s.
Twenty people out of the entire Empire’s population…… undoubtedly a remarkable number.
But in the eyes of Raven, in the eyes of everyone in [Shadow Swamp], whether it was dozens in a million, or dozens in ten million, or dozens in a hundred million…… it was not worth it, not worthy of Anselm paving the way for her personally.
The person with that value could only be soone like Hitana or Mingfuluo, an absolute uniqueness.
Facing the incredibly serious subordinate, Anselm laughed and shook his head: “Wouldn't you think, it’s you yourselves who didn't think of where Marina has value?”
“Precisely because we cannot think of it, I decided to ask you personally.”
Raven answered: “You have no necessity to answer our question, but I still earnestly hope you can give us an answer.”
Back when accepting interviews from [Shadow Swamp] and [Garden], the interviewer from [Garden] said to Marina “People from [Shadow Swamp] are just like that”.
[Shadow Swamp], not standing within the normal administrative system, in style, didn't even look like a normal follower.
Because probably no follower would use a tone without emotional fluctuation to say “earnestly hope you can give us an answer” to the person they followed.
But Anselm still entrusted them with heavy responsibilities, or rather…… precisely because of this style, Anselm would entrust them with heavy responsibilities, making [Shadow Swamp] and [Garden] almost sit on equal footing.
Anselm’s footsteps stopped.
He looked up.
Looking up like this in the Lower District couldn't even view the sky from the bottom of a well, only seeing the crisscrossing passageways that blocked the vision, blocked the sky, blocked the lives of those living here.
“I actually am not partial to her, Raven.”
“……What?”
“I do not harbor any selfish motives towards Marina.”
Anselm smiled.
He turned his head to look at the street not far away, and that was precisely the street where he and Hitana fought during the day today.
Raven was silent for a mont, then shook its head: “But you behave unlike it.”
“I also know it looks unlike it, even Aluo doesn't quite believe .”
The young Hydra shook his head: “But the fact is just so, because it is not being partial to her, cleaning up after her, Raven.”
He looked at his capable subordinate, sighing with a complicated and indescribable tone:
“It is she who can always so precisely be one step ahead of …… doing things I might want to do, but haven't done yet.”
This was a very, very high evaluation, but Raven caught the most critical part of it.
“Might want to do it?” It asked so.
“Yes.”
That sigh seed to have a reason.
“And it is rely, might want to do, that’s all.”
