They did not expect quiet. After a fight like that, they expected smoke, broken stone, screams. Instead they got hollow silence that settled on everyone like a weight.
Eiji leaned on a slab of black marble and breathed through the ache. His shirt was torn, his hands shook. Alma stood beside him, a shape of light that did not fully touch anything. She blinked slow and tried to steady herself, parts of her still spat static. Her color dimd and brightened like a failing lamp.
Rhea sat with her back to a fallen pillar and checked her blade. She wiped blood off the edge without ceremony. Vesper moved through the wreckage with quick hands, gathering loose wards and setting small bones down in careful positions. Selendra stayed close to Eiji, tail still and eyes on everything that moved. lchior crouched near the last portal and ran a hand around the seam like he could feel the math of it.
"Is it done?" Eiji asked. His voice surprised him by how small it sounded.
lchior did not answer at once,he pald the seam and closed his eyes. The air around the rift shimred a last ti and then settled. The torn light stitched itself into a hard line and the ground stopped shaking.
"For now," lchior said. "The breach is sealed."
Alma put two fingers against Eiji’s chest, her touch did not register on any of them, but she let it rest there anyway. Her voice ca in his head, clearer than it had been since she woke.
[System core stable. Integrity drop avoided. I am here.]
Eiji told himself he should feel relief but he only felt hollow. Sothing had co through and left a mark no one could read.
Vesper did not sit,she checked the wards they had set and then walked the short distance to the nearest broken wall. Her fingers skimd the cracked stone.
"This place should have collapsed with the god," she said. Her voice held an edge. "The pocket should have folded and died. It didn’t."
Rhea tightened her jaw. "Maethra burned, her shape is gone."
"Maethra is gone," Alma agreed. "Her presence ended when Kroth pulled and lchior drove. That was the sacrifice, the debt is paid there."
lchior’s hand flexed on the seam,he did not answer. He had closed the last stitch and felt sothing like thread still humming under his palm. He did not pretend he understood it.
For a long minute no one spoke, the dust settled. Birds, if there were birds, did not return.
Then Vesper stopped moving, she had been listening without anyone knowing. Eiji watched her face change. Her eyes narrowed as if focusing on sothing that was not in front of her.
"What is it?" Rhea asked.
Vesper’s voice was flat. "the quiet is wrong. Not silence, wrong silence. Like the sky holding its breath."
Alma’s light flickered. "I feel it too," she said. Her voice was not in Eiji’s head this ti but in the space near his ear. "There’s a pressure I can’t read,it’s older than gods."
lchior straightened. "Older than gods is not a thing that should breathe near here."
He spoke and the ground answered,a thin line of shadow crawled across the floor where nothing should cast a dark. It moved the way a stain spreads. Eiji watched it go and felt cold run under his skin that had nothing to do with the desert wind.
"It’s not dying," Selendra said. She rose to her feet, her voice was quiet, sharp. "It’s opening."
Rhea pushed herself up,she kept her hand on her sword. "Stay ready. If it launches another attack we will fight."
They did not have to wait, the first crack in the sky opened above the ruined dais. It was not light that tore,it was space folding inward like a mouth closing and refusing to let day out.
A low hum rolled through the ground, deeper than any drum,it sounded like tal being bent under pressure. The hum put pressure in their chests, the old stones around them vibrated.
Alma’s color drained, she tried to analyze but the lines in her core jittered without resolving.
[Unknown energy signature. Patterns do not match any known deity or demon. Diagnostic failed.]
"lchior," she said. "This does not match anything you or I know."
He had already gone to the seam and was moving his hands in slow patterns. He spoke without turning. "Bind,if you can. If not,be ready to move."
The shadow grew a shape as it climbed out. It was not a shape any of them had words for. It folded into limbs that were wrong and It had no face. Instead it carried a thousand whispers like a swarm inside a jar.
Vesper raised her spear, the tal on her ring eyes flared. She moved with the certainty of soone who had practiced this danger.
The figure stepped fully into the ruined hall. It did not stand,it hung, suspended in the air. Its center pulsed with a dark red vein of light. The whispers swallowed the hum and turned it into words you could not hear but still understood as a threat.
lchior’s face went white,he had sealed a portal before,he had a ritual for threats. This did not match his rituals,he said one na under his breath without aning to.
"Null," he said. "That is not a god, that is a thing gods feared."
Eiji felt the word like a punch,he did not know what Null ant beyond the sound of the na. The thing that called itself Null did not answer,it had no mouth.
Selendra’s tail stood up behind her,she did not look afraid. She looked like a cat deciding the distance between her and a threat.
"Can we fight it?" Eiji asked, though his voice was small.
"We can try," Rhea said. Her blade found the light in her hand and the edge glowed. "We need to force a hole and push it back where it ca from."
Vesper closed her eyes and began to chant under her breath. The small bones at her fingers clicked and she struck the air with the intone of soone calling old laws and the sound cut like a wire.
The Null moved,it did not flinch,it leaned toward Vesper as if to taste her song. Her chant broke like a thin string and the whispering around them changed. It beca hunger.
"Everyone, move!" lchior barked. He planted his staff into the ground and pushed his hands forward. Symbols lit along the staff and pulsed outward like ripples. A wall of blue glass rose between the team and the Null. It held for a breath and then the edges began to lt where the Null touched it.
Alma reached for Eiji, her energy flowed and stabbed at the thing and the Null absorbed it like a sponge. The light folded into the red vein and grew brighter.
Eiji felt his core burn, the silence in him snapped into a scream and Alma’s voice beca a ragged sound.
[Do not let it reach .]
He did not understand what it ant and there was no ti to ask. The stone shook, chunks fell from the ceiling. The hall tilted as if the world wanted to set itself right and failed.
lchior’s eyes flared with a decision,he had not expected to call what he reached for. He would not explain why he could. He only knew they could not hold.
"We have to move," he said. "Now."
He did sothing quick with his staff. A ring of glyphs burned in the air. Alma faltered and tried to keep them contained. The Null reached with a tendril of shadow that moved like thick smoke.
It snagged Eiji’s sleeve and for one heartbeat the world dropped out of him. Cold spoke into his ears, the whispering said a pair of words in a language older than they could understand.
"The void rembers you."
Eiji felt fingers of cold slide along his spine. He saw a sothing like teeth in the air. He jerked and tried to pull away and Selendra’s hand ca to his arm and held him like a lifeline.
"Move!" Rhea shouted.
lchior slamd the staff down and the ring opened into a door of clean white light. It did not look like the other doors. It looked like an absence that soone had pulled tight. Through it was a sliver of space that slled of wild rain.
"Go," lchior said. His voice did not hope.
They ran and Eiji thought for a second he would not make it. The tendril of shadow wrapped around his ankle and bit him and pain flared there. Vesper threw a warding bone and it exploded into a bloom of sharp light that cut the tendril. Selendra twisted and used the tail as a whip. Rhea slashed it with her sword.
They dove through the white door as the wall of blue glass shattered around the Null.
The thing did not follow them the mont they crossed, its tendril snatched air and groped at nothing. With a sound like a choir swallowing a scream, the Null pulled back and folded into the dark seam and the white door thunked shut behind them.
They fell into a place that slled like old rain and burned wood. It was another world, but not far.
The sky here was a green gray and the ground shivered. They lay panting on stone that had been turned smooth by wind, for a long second they simply laying down trying to catch their breaths.
Alma floated near the rim of the door,a dim figure reaching in. Her voice trembled in Eiji’s head but did not have the strength to beco a full presence for the others to hear.
[It rembered you,it tasted familiarity. This is bad.]
