[Chapter 109. Breaking Point]

The discarded torch lying on the damp ground cast a series of erratic, flickering lights across the expansive chamber floor. Its orange flas danced like trapped, agitated spirits against the oppressive, encroaching darkness of the cavern. Lana looked up toward the shimring impact point of Vanessa's recent Arcane Bolt, her breath catching in her throat as the massive centipede—the Depths Devourer—descended from the ceiling like a nightmare given physical form. Her shield ca up just in ti, the heavy tal eting the creature's jagged pincers with a jarring, bone-shaking impact that vibrated violently up her arm and into her shoulder.

The sheer, overwhelming force of the beast pressed against her, driving Lana down toward her knees. Her heavy leather boots dug deep into the compacted soil of the chamber floor as she fought a desperate battle to hold her ground, her muscles straining to their absolute limits. The creature's pincers scraped against the rim of her shield with an ear-splitting shriek of tal on chitin, each massive push from the behemoth threatening to send her skidding backward across the cavern.

A second Arcane Bolt slamd into the Depths Devourer's heavily armored form. The impact echoed through the chamber with a dull, hollow thud, the energy seemingly absorbed by the creature's massive, segnted body. In a sudden flash of distorted arcane light, Sarah appeared directly on the beast's plated back. She began running her daggers along the thick chitin with a desperate, frantic speed. Each strike produced a high-pitched scratching sound, but the blades barely marked the dark surface; they slid across the hardened exterior plates like fingernails on polished glass.

The beast seed entirely impervious to their current level of output. Its armored shell deflected all but the most powerful directed attacks with a sense of contemptuous ease.

By this point in the engagent, Vanessa had accumulated nearly a dozen shimring motes of energy beside her. Each one fired small, autonomous projectiles with every successful cast of her Starfall Matrix. However, these motes peppered the creature like ineffective raindrops against a stone wall, leaving only faint, superficial impressions on the shell that faded almost as soon as they appeared. The cost in mana was becoming substantial for such a minimal tactical effect, and the strain was beginning to show on Vanessa’s pale face.

Sarah continued her relentless assault, her legs hooked tightly against the ridges of the carapace as she sat astride the creature's undulating back. Her daggers, which were initially unable to penetrate the armor, finally began to find purchase as her Montum Feast skill fully activated. Deep, jagged grooves appeared in the chitin where she struck repeatedly in the exact sa location. The edges of her blades seed to grow sharper and more resistant with each successful hit, the skill actively adapting the weapon's properties to the creature's specific biological defenses.

Carn stood frozen beside Vanessa, her hands hanging uselessly at her sides for the mont. With no imdiate injuries to nd, she could only watch as the others fought their desperate battle. Her mind raced through various possibilities, but she found no opening for her specific set of skills in the current stalemate. She had already placed a defensive ward on Lana—the sa faint, white glowing mark that had saved the tank from the earlier flas—ensuring both automatic healing and a significant reduction in damage if Lana were to take a potentially lethal hit. It was all she could do for now: a passive, silent safeguard in a battle that demanded active, violent participation.

Lana continued to hold the twenty-five-ter beast at bay. Her entire body was trembling with an effort that seed to draw from hidden reserves she never knew she possessed. She wasn't entirely sure how she remained standing against such overwhelming physical force, but the question faded into the back of her mind. She focused entirely on the imdiate task of survival, each breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps while the creature pushed relentlessly forward against her shield.

The Depths Devourer suddenly tilted its massive head, pulling back slightly as if it were assessing the current impasse. Instead of continuing its direct, forward assault against Lana's shield, the creature executed a sudden, violent tactical shift. The beast flicked its head upward with blinding speed, catching the vulnerable underside of Lana’s defensive stance. Lana was not prepared for the change in tactics; her entire posture had been optimized for forward resistance and horizontal stability, not upward leverage. Her boots left the packed soil as she was launched into the air, the sheer force of the impact stealing the breath from her lungs in an instant.

Mid-flight, the centipede swatted her sideways with one of its many armored legs, sending her careening across the chamber like a discarded rag doll. The secondary impact produced a dull, heavy thud as the earth compressed behind her. The force of the collision was sufficient to leave a visible dent in the solid tunnel wall. Lana slid down to the ground, leaving a shallow, vertical depression in the packed soil. A faint, pale light pulsed briefly at her neck—Carn's ward activating in response to the trauma. The magic rendered her unconscious for a split second before a surge of healing energy flooded her system, leaving her breathless and battered but miraculously alive.

Sarah seized the mont and drove her dagger deep into the Depths Devourer's exposed chitin with all her might. The accumulation of power from her previous strikes finally paid dividends. The creature released a high-pitched, agonizing screech that echoed through the vast chamber, thrashing its massive body wildly in response to the sudden pain. The violent movent dislodged Sarah from its back, sending her tumbling through the air. In the chaos, Sarah lost her grip on her primary dagger, which remained embedded deep in the creature's armor plates like a crimson thorn stuck in a vast, dark hide.

In that split second of vulnerability, she watched as the beast's massive head shot in her direction with terrifying speed, its multi-faceted eyes fixed squarely on her falling form. Instinct—or perhaps pure, unadulterated panic—triggered her Rift Step. She teleported a few ters away just in ti to evade the snapping pincers that closed with a loud crack on empty air.

Carn was already at Lana's side, healing her as she struggled to her feet. White light flowed from the healer's hands in steady, rhythmic waves. Lana's face contorted in a mask of agony as her shattered bones nded themselves back together, a process that was both miraculous to see and agonizing to witness. With a cry of fury born from renewed pain and raw defiance, Lana charged forward once more, her shield held firmly before her. The Depths Devourer turned back toward her, its attention completely diverted by the renewed effect of her taunt skill, which forced it to focus its aggression solely on her.

Iris, watching from the rear, drove her Zweihänder back into the ground. She had instinctively drawn the massive weapon the mont the beast sent Lana flying, but she refrained from intervening. She leaned against the long, leather-wrapped hilt, watching from the tunnel entrance behind Vanessa with the eerie stillness of a predator observing its young. Her expression remained blank as she observed every movent—the won's frantic efforts and the Depths Devourer's thodical brutality. Inside, however, sothing stirred. To have changed so much in such a short period of ti was no small feat. To fight for their lives against a creature of this scale, to endure such imnse physical pain and continue standing... where before there had only been complaining, crying, fear, and utter helplessness.

Lana's shield t the Depths Devourer's pincers again with a deafening, tallic clang that reverberated through the vast chamber. The sound bounced off the unseen walls in the oppressive darkness, a rhythmic tally of the struggle. The impact jarred through her entire skeleton; her teeth rattled as her boots struggled to find purchase on the now broken soil. Her shortsword remained uselessly sheathed at her hip; its edge was futile against the creature's formidable armor, which had already proven resistant to Sarah's enhanced daggers.

Each successive impact drove Lana further back toward the wall. The strain was evident in the visible trembling of her arms and the way her muscles scread against the imnse force bearing down upon them. She understood her role perfectly now—she wasn't here to deal the killing blow; she was here to be a living, breathing shield. She was here to occupy the beast's attention so the others could find a way to finish it.

Vanessa's hands were trembling uncontrollably as she stood near the tunnel entrance. Her usually precise, academic movents were now unsteady and jagged. The spell matrix before her flickered erratically, becoming unstable as her concentration wavered in tandem with her rapidly depleting mana reserves. Each arcane bolt she launched drained precious energy that she simply could not replenish in this hostile, high-pressure environnt.

"I'm almost out of mana!" she cried out, her voice tight with a barely concealed panic. The words echoed slightly in the cavernous space, sounding small against the creature's roars.

No verbal response ca from her teammates. Carn's head snapped sharply toward Vanessa, her expression grim beneath the flickering torchlight. The healer's hands remained empty of spells for a mont as her gaze darted between Lana's physical struggle and Vanessa's deteriorating magical state.

Sarah, perched once again on the creature's back after a short scramble, reached for the dagger embedded deep in the chitin. Her fingers wrapped around the hilt, and she pulled it free with a grunt of physical exertion. She struck again imdiately, targeting a different section of the beast's segnted back, but the blade rely scraped harmlessly across the armored plates with a tallic shriek that grated on everyone’s nerves. A frustrated hiss escaped her lips as she realized the accumulated effects from her Montum Feast had vanished during her evasive teleport. She was starting the process from scratch once more.

"Lana, how much longer can you hold that thing?" Sarah shouted over the creature's furious screeching. She began running her daggers along the segnted back as she carefully made her way toward the massive head, each step requiring intense balance on the undulating, moving surface.

"Not long!" Lana grunted through clenched teeth, stumbling backward as another powerful blow struck her shield with bone-jarring force. "I still have a little mana, but my arms feel like they're made of lead! Sothing is going to break soon!"

Sarah paused on the segnt connected directly to the beast's head, crouching low as the creature thrashed violently beneath her. "I just lost all of my montum stacks! Vanessa's stopped casting completely now!" She drove her dagger down with all her might, barely penetrating the chitin enough to maintain her precarious balance as the centipede writhed.

"I could build the stacks up again," Sarah said, her voice strained as she slashed her dagger into what appeared to be a vulnerable joint between the segnts, drawing only a tiny trickle of black ichor. "But it takes ti—ti we might not have!"

"Just do it!" Lana called out, her voice finally cracking under the imnse strain as the Depths Devourer's pincers began to slowly, visibly crush the top rim of her shield.
