Chapter 972: Chapter 22: Physicians Cannot Heal Themselves (4)

“It’s alright. I knew this trip would be tough before coming, and I invited you to maybe get a better understanding of this person’s background.” He pushed the swing, the woman’s skirt fluttering in the night breeze. “But I didn’t expect you to lose your temper, you’ve been holding it in for a while, haven’t you?”

“I wanted to change careers two months ago,” Mafan said softly, “Ever since Ayane ca back, the mories of the Chikou Project have beco vivid. Every ti I’m in the lab, I wonder if my work has been aiding so other legitimate yet inhumane experints. You know their nature, those in lab coats were never good people.”

“You didn’t used to think this much before.”

“I do now.” The doctor sighed gloomily, “I just want to be a doctor, treat your wounds, maybe help with the occasional cold and such. I’m only working for money and status, and that idiot woman Cecil scolds for it every other day, even when I’m on a business trip in the United States, I still have to endure her ntor’s criticism. Wanting to be an ordinary person is truly a grave sin.”

“Researchers always have their fervor, soone as gifted and sensible as you must seem like a heretic to them, hard to tolerate.” Gongsun Ce patted her shoulder, “But you’re right, excessive zeal only leads to tragedy, we’ve all seen too much of that.”

Mafan tightly gripped the swing’s rope, recalling her conversation with the doctor before she left. “Bai Aoli? She’s already ruined,” Doctor Cecil said disdainfully, “She and you are two extres. You lack passion, she was driven mad by her own.”

At the ti, she thought Doctor Cecil was being arrogant again, but now it seed the doctor’s assessnt was correct. Doctor Cecil’s decision not to disclose research results to her forr ntor could now be seen as an act of rcy. Mafan could imagine how the doctor would describe it: Let her waste her ti on the path she thinks is feasible, to save her from doubling down on madness once she saw reality.

“Bai Aoli Dadarian’s eyes were just like those of the instructor back then. She’s dangerous, people like that would stop at nothing to achieve their goals.”

Gongsun Ce patted her shoulder: “I understand. I’ll be careful.”

His promise put the doctor’s mind at ease. Thoughts about career and life woes filled her brain again, Mafan looked up, slightly leaning against his chest.

“I’m so annoyed.” She closed her eyes, “Everyone else has found what they should be doing, but I’m still stuck here, confused.”

Once, she was the most mature and dependable Superpower User, but now it seed everyone was on the right path, while she had beco much weaker than she was before. Always being the cold and unsympathetic “doctor” wouldn’t cause such troubles; deciding to be the ordinary Mafan could also keep her away from trivial matters. But now she’s beco indecisive, like a teru teru bozu doll hanging by the door, swaying in the wind with no idea of which direction she truly aid for.

Suddenly, Mafan felt emptiness behind her, soone had sneakily walked in front of her, pulling her off the swing. “Let’s go!” Gongsun Ce dragged her onto the street, “It’s dinner ti, let’s grab sothing to eat and lift our spirits!”

“Are you a kid?” Mafan chuckled involuntarily.

“Kids are always happier than adults.” Gongsun Ce replied with a bright smile, “Order whatever you want, my treat!”

As he spoke, he led the woman down the steps, dashing through the streets and alleys of Hundred Birds City. The lush green canopy and brown wood made Mafan montarily feel she was in the jungle, yet the humid air carried the scent of human life. The dark-skinned locals strolled under the green shade, lacking the fast pace and urgency of city dwellers. Two travelers from afar ran amidst the crowd, attracting onlookers’ attention, while the gray-haired young man leading her laughed heartily, paying no mind.

Mafan’s face involuntarily blood into a smile, such a pure run was always joyful, the breeze brushing against her face seed to blow away all worries, as if with each step she blended into the surroundings and herself beca a wisp of carefree wind.
