Chapter 289: Chapter 161: Safe Return_2
The Drone Quantum Radar activated, searching for a deserted spot along the coast of Shanghai before landing on the shoreline. Once Yan Fei returned to the coast, the drone sank to the ocean floor off the coast of Shanghai, lying motionless in the deep-sea trench. The flight across the North Pacific had nearly depleted the drone’s Energy Points, leaving just enough for it to lie in wait at the bottom of the sea until the next data refresh.
Standing on China’s soil, though surrounded by darkness without a person in sight, Yan Fei felt a sense of relief. His assault on the Middle East as the Destroyer, while glorious, had kept him in constant fear, devoid of a sense of security. Now back in China, he felt a sudden dependence and a lot more at ease in his heart.
After reflecting for a while, Yan Fei slightly altered his appearance and took a motorcycle from Universal Space, driving along the highway toward the Jinshan Developnt Zone, a subordinate district of Suzhou City in Lin Province. At midnight, halfway through his journey, the data from the drone indeed did not refresh as expected.
This confird Yan Fei’s previous suspicion that the data refresh tis for the drone were related to the local ti of midnight and that the intervals between two data refreshes could not be less than 24 hours. This shattered Yan Fei’s dream of the drone possessing unlimited energy and weapons.
Continuing his journey, two hours later, Yan Fei finally arrived near the villa he had bought in the Jinshan Developnt Zone. Around the villa, he saw the army that was charged with securing his ho. The army had sealed off the villa so tightly that, despite the deep night with no one coming or going, they ticulously carried out their defensive duties, keeping any suspicious individuals from entering the villa. With their level of security, not even a fly could sneak into the villa, let alone a full-grown person.
As Yan Fei observed the heavily guarded military outside, he beca perplexed, unsure of how to return to his villa. Just as he was troubled, a military vehicle sped toward him, stopping at the army’s Command Center, and two military officers descended. The officers gathered the army’s commander, delivering an order to him. Then Yan Fei saw the army begin to assemble and pack up their weapons and equipnt. Once everything was loaded onto the vehicles, the soldiers boarded and departed without leaving a single person behind.
...
Realizing the army had completely withdrawn, Yan Fei mused and understood that it must an Duan Hongye and his colleague had returned from their mission in the Middle East. The Assassin Sect had been thoroughly eradicated by the Destroyer, and Huo Shan had been gravely injured, needing at least two years to recuperate. During this ti, the threat posed by the Assassin Sect to Yan Fei and Lu Pingping was virtually eliminated, which is why the army protecting them had been recalled.
However, this was a good thing, as without the army’s watchful eyes, it was the perfect opportunity for Yan Fei to return ho and swap back to his original identity undetected. With a flip, Yan Fei was back inside his villa, entering his own room, only to find Lu Pingping asleep at his desk.
Yan Fei, seeing Lu Pingping frowning even in her sleep, felt a pang of heartache. He carefully removed his clothes and draped them over Lu Pingping.
With her high level of vigilance, Lu Pingping woke up imdiately when the clothing was placed over her. Not quite believing her eyes when she saw Yan Fei standing in front of her, she rubbed her eyes to make sure she wasn’t dreaming and her eyes swiftly reddened. Her deanor suggested she was about to throw herself into Yan Fei’s arms, but she refrained and stood still instead.
Yan Fei said, “Pingping, thank you for your hard work. I’m back!”
Lu Pingping looked at Yan Fei and said, “Fei, I’m glad you’re back!”
Then, Lu Pingping’s knees buckled and she collapsed to the floor. Yan Fei, startled, hurriedly caught her and, upon examination, found that she had succumbed to utter exhaustion. During his absence, Lu Pingping was constantly on edge, dreading any danger that might befall Yan Fei, and thus she had not rested properly. Now, reassured of Yan Fei’s safe return, she let out a breath she had been holding and peacefully fell asleep.
Yan Fei placed Lu Pingping on his bed and tucked her in. Looking at her tired face, a mory struck him of the ti he faced his most desperate mont against Huo Shan, and the first person who ca to his mind was Lu Pingping, which had filled his heart with a sense of happiness. He straightened her disheveled hair with a gentle touch of his hand and then left the room to sleep in his own study.
The next day, when Yan Fei awoke, he was spirited and completely healed. Except for the lingering sensation of a tear in his Spiritual Soul, his body was back in peak condition.
Upon waking, Lu Pingping found herself in Yan Fei’s bed, and her cheeks flushed. eting Yan Fei, she felt a bit shy. However, before the two could communicate, Yu Xiaozhou from the China Special Duties Unit ca to visit. During Yan Fei’s absence, Yu Xiaozhou had visited daily, seeking an audience with Yan Fei, but each ti he was turned away by Lu Pingping. Her excuse was that Yan Fei was ntally and physically troubled by the brutal killing of his colleagues and needed ti to recuperate in solitude, unable to et with anyone. It was thanks to Lu Pingping’s assistance that Yan Fei’s lengthy absence remained a secret.
