Maybe this world was not so different from my old one...was the question raised by Allen, as he walked toward his mission.

Now was it really the sa? There was nor is a crystalline clear answer to that question and neither would be.

Though one thing which was clear was the fact that this world was a cruel world, filled with war and death and slavery and corruption and all the bad and terrible things you could think about.

Why is that you ask?

***

Well, even if I may have made a wrong decision coming here it’s not like much can be done about it right now. Rather see it through than worry and sabotage it myself.

After all, the thoughts would never end, if I start to overthink. Being transported to another world is not really an easy peasy task so of course there’ll be questions and strange situations, I guess I just have to learn to deal with them.

This is my reality now.

Allen thought, ntally resoluting his mind to whatever was about to co his way now. He shook his head once, clearing his mind and pulling himself back into focus.

The lights from the campfire ahead were very clear now, and they were just a few steps away from the camps.

They walked slowly through the camp. The air was cold and it slled of woodsmoke and unwashed bodies and stale ale. The main light ca from a few large and sputtering campfires that lit up their surroundings fairly well. They were the sa ones Allen had been seeing for quite a while now.

Groups of soldiers were gathered around them and most of them were quiet as they just stared into the flas. So were drinking, with their voices being low and rough.

The helt Allen was wearing felt heavy and hot on his head and the unfamiliar weight of the armor was still making his movent a bit clumsy.

He glanced at Luna who was beside her. She was trying to walk like a man and to her credit, it looked convincing enough. Or he hoped.

"Are you sure we’ll blend in?" he whispered with his voice sounding a little strange inside the tal helt.

"We have to," Luna whispered back. Her voice was much deeper than usual and sounded forced. "Just keep your head down. Act tired, and don’t talk unless you have to. I’ll try to handle the most of it so don’t be too tense."

Allen nodded and they kept walking, moving past a group of soldiers arguing quietly over a ga of dice. The soldiers didn’t even look up at them.

They were too unbothered to.

So far it seed like things had been going well.

They passed the stables and the sll of hay and horse manure was strong and it covered up the other, worse slls of the camp.

They rounded a corner past a large supply tent before abruptly coming to a stop.

Two guards stood in their path and were blocking the narrow path to the quieter and more isolated area where the command tent was more likely to be, away from all the regular soldiers.

The first thought in Allen’s mind was to summon the M9 pistol and instantly put these two to sleep, but he fought against his survival instincts and willed his body to stay relaxed.

The guards looked as tired as everyone else in this camp, with their armor being scuffed. The red rose emblems of their armor were caked with mud and dirty along with a few other parts of their armor.

One of them was a big man with a thick and unkempt beard, and was holding up a hand blocking their path.

"Hold up," the big man said. His voice was rough. "You two. Where are you coming from? That’s the west periter, isn’t it?"

Luna stepped forward slightly seeing the tensed state Allen was in. Despite everything, she was a professional knight and a Gifted One over that. Since childhood she had been trained to handle situations like these.

"Yeah," Luna said. Her voice was a low and rough growl. It sounded like she had a bad sore throat. It was intentional, since she was trying to make herself sound as much like a man as her vocal cords physically allowed.

"Did you find anything out there?" the second guard asked. He was younger and leaner than his partner, and could be classified as more of passive types from one look.

Relatively, of course.

Luna let out a harsh and fake cough. "Nothing more than the fucking freezing winds and the godforsaken darkness," she said.

The big guard grunted. "Tell about it. Pointless. Fucking pointless!" He spat on the ground. "That bastard Randolf. Sitting in his warm tent and sending us out to freeze our balls off for nothing. Despite the fact that we lost so many n...who the hell made that dumbfuck a commander."

"First that light show this afternoon," the younger guard chid in. "Now this. Spare so my nerves are completely killing here."

The big guard looked past Allen and Luna and it appeared to be that he was counting them. "Wait a minute. Aren’t patrols supposed to be four n? Where are the other two?"

Of course he was going to notice. Allen thought to himself.

Since he didn’t want to just let Luna do all the work and the fact that he had gotten a little used to the situation he decided to handle this one himself.

He shrugged while trying to make the movent look casual under the heavy armor. "Taking a piss together," he said. His own voice was muffled by the helt. "Back near the rocks sowhere. Said they’d catch up."

The younger guard laughed. It was a short and sharp bark. "Can’t bla ’em. Anyone would be peeing gallons in this cold. Heck I’ve had to go three tis since my shift started."

The big guard seed to accept the answer and didn’t bother much about it. It was a rather common thing to happen. He grunted again and then turned his attention back to Luna.

The guard squinted at her. He leaned in a little, studying her helt. "You sound awful young, kid. Did your voice even crack yet?"

Allen froze for a mont. This was bad. He knew this was going to be bad. No matter how much she tried, changing her voice was a really really difficult thing and couldn’t be done on a whim like that.

Of course anyone would catch on with enough ti.
