Jiang Man had also been without Zhang Xiaoshan’s affection for a while.

At her age, she was like a dam that had been storing water for over twenty years, and once there was a crack, the scene turned spectacular.

She was about to accept Zhang Xiaoshan, but her phone rang at the most inopportune ti.

"What?"

"Huh?"

"Okay, okay, I got it."

"Have the Health Bureau ready, I’ll be right there."

"Yes, yes, yes, give full attention to rescuing the injured, save lives first."

After hanging up the phone, Jiang Man’s face was filled with panic.

This was the first ti Zhang Xiaoshan had seen Jiang Man so worked up over her job since he knew her.

"Sister Man, what’s wrong?"

Zhang Xiaoshan asked curiously.

Jiang Man hastily replied.

"A pharmaceutical warehouse in the county has collapsed due to disrepair over the years, hurting a lot of people, and a few have been taken to the ergency room. As the person in charge, I need to go see what’s happening. I can’t stay with you today."

"Ah, that’s serious, then you should hurry over, Sister Man."

"Hmm."

Jiang Man ran back to her office in a hurry.

Soon, four official cars stread out of the county governnt compound.

At the sa ti, a few police cars also set off from the Public Security Bureau.

"Local pharmaceutical company?"

Zhang Xiaoshan muttered to himself.

"Isn’t Sun Youyou’s father, Teacher Zhou’s husband working at a pharmaceutical company? I hope nothing happened to him."

"It shouldn’t be, Wanshan County has three pharmaceutical factories, it can’t be that coincidental, right?"

Having not eaten lunch yet and with his stomach growling, he found a restaurant nearby for a al.

During the al, he suddenly rembered Shi Yue transferring money to him.

He checked his ssages and didn’t find any notice of funds being credited.

Then he opened the mobile bank app and checked.

The account number he gave to Shi Yue was his salary card.

At present, it showed a balance of a little over three thousand.

It was exactly the amount of the salary received last month.

"What’s going on with Shi Yue? Wasn’t she supposed to go to the bank by noon?"

Displeased, he sent a WeChat ssage to Shi Yue.

"Where’s my money?"

"Aren’t you going to talk?"

"????"

"Where are you?"

He sent over a dozen ssages in a row.

All went unanswered, as if dropped into a deep sea of silence.

"Maybe she’s busy and hasn’t seen them?"

Zhang Xiaoshan comforted himself and continued eating.

Half an hour later, when he left the restaurant it was almost seven o’clock.

It had been more than ten days since the start of autumn, and at seven in the evening, the sky was almost completely dark, with many signs along the street now lit up.

He checked his phone again and found that Shi Yue had still not replied to his ssages.

At this ti, he began to realize that sothing was amiss.

So he directly dialed Shi Yue’s mobile number.

"Sorry, the number you have dialed is switched off."

"Doo-doo-doo..."

The voice on the phone indicated that it had been switched off and was unreachable.

"Damn!"

Zhang Xiaoshan exploded in an instant.

He now understood that Shi Yue had played him.

"That Shi Yue, dammit, even dared to scam my money?"

"Dammit."

Three hundred thousand, to Zhang Xiaoshan who now possessed a fortune of several million, wasn’t a staggering amount, but it was definitely not a small sum.

Moreover, who would ever complain about having too much money?

The most important thing is, it’s not about the money; it’s about deception, about being toyed with.

Zhang Xiaoshan felt like an idiot, played by Shi Yue.

"I should’ve known," he muttered, "She’s always been a liar; how could I have expected her to keep her word?"

"But if she had already planned on deceiving , why did she run off to the bank at noon?"

"Right, she must’ve transferred the money to her own account. That must be it, she called just then. Yes."

The more he thought, the more Zhang Xiaoshan’s anger flared.

"Damn it, that wench is so infuriating, she’s driving crazy."

Having trust betrayed was truly an awful feeling.

"Damn it, just wait, the world isn’t that big; I refuse to believe we’ll never et again. Just you wait until I catch you, I’ll give you a good lesson."

At that mont, Zhang Xiaoshan began to regret.

When they were on the hillside before, he should not have been lenient with Shi Yue. Considering it was her first ti, he had been gentle out of pity. He should have been more relentless.

"Damn it, just you wait."

Zhang Xiaoshan was so angry he felt an itch in his teeth.

Fury surged up towards his Heavenly Spirit.

After taking a few deep breaths, he cald down slightly.

What’s done was done, and there was nothing he could do now. At least he had taught the Wu family a lesson and taken their house and land deeds; it wasn’t a total loss.

"I should head back to the village first," he decided.

With that thought, he got into his car, ready to leave.

Suddenly, his phone rang.

Thinking it was Shi Yue, he hurriedly picked it up.

But it wasn’t her.

Nonetheless, he was equally surprised.

Bai Shutong?

"Didn’t she just leave? Why is she calling ?" he wondered.

Puzzled, he answered the call.

"Journalist Bai, what’s up?" he said.

"Sniff, could you co over?" she asked.

"Where to?" he asked, completely baffled.

"You... you were going back to the provincial city, weren’t you?"

Since Bai Shutong had left the county office an hour ago, she should have been over a hundred kiloters away from Wanshan County by now, right?

"Hmm..." Bai Shutong elongated her syllable, apparently pondering how to respond to Zhang Xiaoshan.

"Oh, the ride-share I booked broke down on the way, and I have to stay over in Wanshan County tonight. I’m at the Wanshan Hotel. Co over, please," she explained.

"Ah, but, what for?" he asked, still dumbfounded.

"Won’t you know if you co?" she countered.

"What, am I going to eat you up?" she added, detecting Zhang Xiaoshan’s hesitation, speaking with a hint of annoyance.

"Fine, I’ll co, just give your room number," he conceded.

The call ended, and imdiately after, a ssage pinged on his WeChat—Bai Shutong had sent him the room number.

"What does this woman an by inviting to her hotel room in the middle of the night?" he wondered.

"She couldn’t possibly be intending to finish what we started on the hillside, could she?" his thoughts excited him.

He quickly drove to the address Bai Shutong had given him.

"Knock, knock, knock."

No sooner had Zhang Xiaoshan knocked than Bai Shutong opened the door.

She was quick, obviously having been waiting for Zhang Xiaoshan.

"You, you’ve been crying?" he observed that Bai Shutong’s eyes were sowhat red and swollen, her emotion extrely desolate as though she had just had a good cry.

"Can I hug you?" she asked.

The next mont, she pulled Zhang Xiaoshan into the room, closed the door, then clung tightly to his neck, breaking into heart-wrenching sobs.
