The sun was shining brightly on the second day, resulting in a heat wave surging through the air.
Han Qingsong went to work as usual and the children went to school. Lin Lan had a few etings with Dong Huaihua and Liu Chuncai in the morning before she went ho to cook at noon.
Unexpectedly, the children ca back first.
Lin Lan smiled and said, “Why didn’t you go swimming?”
Sanwang, “Second Brother said that he would co back and help you wash clothes,” Maisui and Erwang carried a basket of sheets whereas Dawang also carried a basin. Xiaowang was holding onto the hand towels while Sanwang went to get so soap and other cleaning supplies.
Lin Lan saw him holding a bar of soap that was as big as his thumb and said, “Isn’t there a bigger one? Bring that one over.”
Sanwang looked at her blankly, “Mom, this is the only one, there isn’t any else left.”
Lin Lan, “!! There’s no more? Didn’t I just buy a large chunk of it a while ago?”
Erwang, “Mom, there really isn’t any left,” Did she not know that our family spends a lot of money on soap?
Lin Lan also seed to co to the sa realisation at that mont, “We really used them all up?” This was kind of incredible because she rembered that there was a big piece of soap a re couple of days ago. Did she end up eating the soap instead?
Erwang, “Mom, we wash our clothes every day.”
Part of the reason was due to the fact that there were lots of clothes to wear during the winter in order to keep warm. Now that it was sumr, they didn’t bundle up in layers, but the family made it a habit to change their underwear every day and wash them— including the ever-so-filthy-Sanwang. Since Lin Lan always used soap every ti she did the laundry, it was bound to finish quickly as the soap they had was not as efficient as it was in modern tis.
Originally, it was alright when Lin Lan was the only one washing the clothes. However, since their father didn’t like how there were so many items that needed to be washed by her alone and how it might tire her out, he had the children wash their own clothes instead.
As a result, Maisui used the soap as lavishly as her mother. She scrubbed her clothes several tis with soap for fear that they would not be clean. And then, there were the four brothers. Erwang and Xiaowang were still good enough, but their Eldest Brother always used a lot of force and ended up breaking the bar of soap itself into tinier pieces, which resulted in a faster consumption rate. Plus, the brat Xiaowang enjoyed playing with it and that also led to the soap being used at a quicker pace.
If it weren’t for the fact that soone would keep an eye on him at all tis, he would have probably used it a lot faster.
Lin Lan was stunned in a daze for a mont. Deciding that she should accept what her current lifestyle was, she smiled, “The quality of soap in this era is really unacceptable.”
Not only was it hard to bubble up properly, but if the water was too hard or had a higher acidity, the soap would not only fail to remove stains, but it would damage the fabric as well. Therefore, the river remained the best place to do laundry.
