Chapter 203: Chapter 202: Encountered Evil_2
With sugar in her mouth, the little girl laid against the slope, the milk’s fragrance and sweetness enveloping her made her squint her eyes in pleasure.
At night, Zheng Tan couldn’t sleep due to his bad mood, so he went outside to urinate. He wasn’t used to the latrine, but seeing that many of the children here just found a spot to relieve themselves, Zheng Tan would sneak off to a deserted area to do the sa.
Climbing out of the window, Zheng Tan left through the backyard and took off. He didn’t want to stay close by, and since he couldn’t sleep anyway, he decided to venture farther out for a walk and take care of his urgent need at the sa ti.
The countryside night was not so quiet to Zheng Tan; the constant sounds of insects’ buzzing and frogs’ croaking, occasionally accompanied by dogs’ barking. In the night, Zheng Tan’s movents were unimpeded. Sotis, he would co across cats from other households in the village. So were provoking, but Zheng Tan wasn’t in the mood to pay them any attention.
Enjoying the evening breeze, he took a stroll, then found a place to relieve himself.
While Zheng Tan was urinating, his ears twitched; soone was approaching. He originally didn’t plan to pay any attention and was going to return after finishing his business, but the voices he heard made him stop his intent to leave.
What a coincidence. He had encountered this individual once during the day, and now he ran into him again late at night.
Zheng Tan hid on one side, waiting for the person to co closer.
Only two people were approaching, one was the person Zheng Tan recognized, whom he had pushed into the artificial lake once, and the other was likely a local villager with an accent. The odor of alcohol wafted from both, and their conversation was filled with village gossip and so raunchy jokes. However, Zheng Tan noticed that the villager referred to his companion as “Snakehead.”
Zheng Tan didn’t hear them discussing any core issues, which left him sowhat disappointed. Yet, since fate had brought them together again, and the other party was drunk late at night, the timing and situation were perfect for Zheng Tan. He felt compelled to teach them a lesson, or it wouldn’t sit right with him.
Thinking it over, Zheng Tan suddenly rembered sothing written in the diary of the youngster living next door. According to the description there, there should be a trap nearby.
Zheng Tan stealthily crept ahead of them to the side, followed the dirt road and ca to a fork. As the boy’s diary had ntioned, behind the fourth house from the end, there was a pit dug in a spot between the backyard fence and the dirt road. They wouldn’t dare to dig blatantly on this road, because they’d get beaten for it. They dug a little distance away from the road, and so of the villagers turned a blind eye, as their own path was always on the dirt road. As for the side of the road, it was evident that a pit had been dug, even without the presence of weeds.
However, late at night, especially after drinking, one’s awareness isn’t as sharp, and it’s difficult to see or rember the “obvious” trap.
Zheng Tan easily found the pit, about three to four ters away from the dirt road, surrounded by tall weeds, a clear sign that few people ventured that way. The trap the children had dug was simple—a square hole about half a ter long, covered with a few thin sticks and so grass on top. Zheng Tan also detected a foul sll emanating from it; probably the mischievous children would occasionally urinate there. Otherwise, just a pit would be too simplistic, and their digging efforts would go to waste.
Zheng Tan tested the carrying capacity of the thin sticks. He would definitely fall through if he stood on them, not to ntion an adult.
The two people were getting closer. Zheng Tan hid on the other side of the dirt road, opposite the trap.
Although he had been drinking, “Snakehead” was still vigilant. He kept feeling as though soone was watching him. Using a flashlight, he scanned the surroundings, but aside from a few fluttering insects, there was nothing.
Could it be the alcohol?
“What’s wrong?” asked the villager, in the middle of an exciting story when he noticed Snakehead had stopped, and inquired.
“Nothing,” Snakehead shook his head and continued walking forward.
The villager didn’t pay much attention and resud the conversation he hadn’t finished.
But Snakehead still had a strange feeling.
“Crack!”
A slight noise ca from nearby.
“Who’s there?” Snakehead looked toward the source of the noise, yet when he shone his flashlight over, he only saw the wooden fence of the vegetable garden behind this household.
The villager was about to say sothing, but Snakehead raised his hand to stop him. He didn’t take a flashlight, but instead reached around his waist and pulled out a dagger. He first checked the opposite direction of the fence to make sure no one would attack him from behind. Seeing that no one could hide there, he then turned and walked towards the vegetable garden. There, many places could conceal a person, such as the privy and a simple wooden shed.
Zheng Tan was hiding in the grass. This height of grass couldn’t conceal a person, but it was just right for hiding a cat. anwhile, Zheng Tan thought to himself that this man was indeed very vigilant; his ability to push him into the lake last ti must have been mostly luck. But this worked just fine. He had thrown a clod of earth that way, and the man had gone after it. From another perspective, did this an that the guy had done so guilty deed, and that’s why he was being so cautious?
Seeing Snakehead’s readiness, the villager swallowed hard, looked around at the pitch-dark surroundings where he couldn’t even see clearly a ter away from himself except for where the flashlight shone. He didn’t bring a flashlight and followed Snakehead, but also didn’t dare to get too close to Snakehead – what if he got hurt?
Zheng Tan watched as Snakehead neared the trap, but Snakehead’s path was a bit off. If he continued straight, he would likely just pass by the edge of the trap.
Snakehead felt certain that soone was hiding nearby, that sense of being watched earlier probably wasn’t an illusion. In any case, it was better to stay alert.
“Pfft!” A faint noise ca from the direction of the wooden shed.
Snakehead tightened his grip on the dagger in his hand and took a few steps toward the sound, deviating from his original path. He called out in the direction of the shed, “Co out, I see you…”
Before he could finish saying “you,” Snakehead felt a strong force hit his lower back.
This ti, Snakehead wasn’t pushed down directly. He rely moved two steps to the side instinctively to dodge. Normally, he would have been able to regain his balance, but unfortunately, just as he put his foot down, a “crack, crack” sound was heard and his foot sank into the ground, causing him to fall to the side.
Snakehead knew that the villager was standing not too far behind him, and he had made sure earlier that there was no one else behind him, so Snakehead hadn’t focused much on his rear. Yet, this still happened.
As he was falling, Snakehead cursed in his mind: Damn it, this is the second ti! Apart from that inexplicable incident at Chuhua University when he was pushed into the lake, this was the second ti he’d been inexplicably hit!
What the hell was going on?!
Had he encountered a ghost?! (To be continued. If you like this work, welco to Qidian (qidian) to cast your recomndation votes, monthly tickets. Your support is my greatest motivation. Mobile users, please visit m.qidian to read.)
