Chapter 744: 744

“Barton!”

“Joey Barton!”

An extre sense of crisis surged in Shard’s heart, and then everyone saw it. They saw the cloaked, gaunt black giant rising from behind Joey Barton.

A massive shadow covered everyone on the ice, and at that mont the world seed to fall completely silent. No one could see what was inside the cloak, but they all could see that black scythe.

“Is this the true power of the Chosen by Death…”

The huge pitch-black scythe slowly swept across the ice, seemingly so slow, yet ti appeared to stop with the swing of that scythe. Shard understood, having witnessed True Death, that this was a strike imbued with the essence of death and termination; any creature struck would instantly step into death.

“Scythe of the Grim Reaper.”

Joey Barton sighed lightly as the dark glimr swept across everyone on the ice. The ice rely cracked into powder upon being touched by the scythe, raising massive waves, and death would terminate everything.

“Balance!”

And in that dark shadow, a dark gold glimr shot up to the sky. With the Golden Scales floating behind her, an uncontrollably furious Iluna hurled the Golden Thunder Spear into the night sky.

The dazzling gold light broke through the lake’s surface; the blooming thunder seed to terminate everything.

The Sunlight Gun struck Joey Barton directly, making him step back into the opened interstice of white fog, which dissolved the thunder.

“Spatial Stabilization Aura!”

A hand appeared behind Barton, and Shard grasped his burly right arm:

That malford youthful face turned to look at Shard, an instant shift to a completely black left eye eting Shard’s gaze.

“Instant Death Attack… No, even though you didn’t pass the judgnt, you wouldn’t have died, he held back.”

The montary icy cold feeling of the soul, made Shard freeze in place. Joey Barton stood on the remaining ice, turning to pull the Jester towards the reopening interstice passageway. But at that mont, a dark vortex appeared behind him:

“Sunlight Gun!”

Utilizing the Chosen One’s Dark Gift, Iluna’s right hand pierced through the vortex, the Sunlight Gun hitting Joey Barton’s back directly. Shard, close by, was splashed by the thunder, but also saw the Golden Spear pierce through his body.

“This…”

The interstice entrance disappeared, taking the Jester and the questionably alive Barton with it. As Shard recovered from the chilling sensation of death and looked back at the lake surface, only ice debris floated in the mist, under the moonlight’s glimring ripples that bore witness to everything that had just occurred.

“He’s definitely not dead… Damn, Iluna!”

Relying on the sorcery “Water Walking,” Shard, stepping on the water, hurriedly ran to the middle of the lake. He saw a golden light in the water and imdiately reached into the lake, pulling up the waterlogged Iluna.

She had shielded her fellow clergyn from the Scythe of the Grim Reaper, and afterward had mustered all her strength to throw the Sunlight Gun, looking extrely weak.

Iluna grabbed Shard’s hand, her wet head erging from the water. The seventeen-year-old girl coughed a few tis, rubbed off her shoes underwater without hesitation, then wrapped her arms around a bending Shard’s neck and stood on Shard’s feet.

Behind her, the Golden Scales slowly dissipated. Her brown hair still dripping, her eyes, under her wet lashes, filled with anger:

“Oh, I thought he could be one of the church’s own, yet he dared to strike us!”

The Golden Scales, representing “Balance,” blocked most of the force from the Scythe of the Grim Reaper. All mbers of the Truth Society were annihilated, their bodies now sunk in the water. The rest of the Sun Church were in a brief coma, being floating above the water surface, controlled by Iluna.

“Glad you’re alright.”

Relieved, Shard took Mia Cat out of his pocket; the cat peeked around. Then Shard took out a towel and offered it to Iluna, who shook her head and refused it:

“I’m sure Joey Barton isn’t dead. Last ti at the Raven Club, didn’t he look perfectly normal? How could he suddenly go mad? I actually thought he could beco one of our comrades.”

Iluna, soaked through, asked through clenched teeth, seeming truly infuriated. Droplets from her hair fell on Mia’s head, causing the timid cat to quickly retreat back into Shard’s arms, but soon peeked out again, looking up at those dripping strands.

“People always have many thoughts. But the good news is, at least The Chosen One hasn’t joined the ranks of the Truth Society.”

Standing on the water, Shard helped Iluna find her footing, her pale feet upon his shoes. They embraced, turning to look at the moon far across the lake:

“The bad news is, Joey Barton has taken a path different from ours. Look, our Diviner friend’s plan, as expected, went awry. The first candidate fled to the Interstice, and what follows is likely to be quite troubleso.”

Iluna said softly, the moonlight softening her tone significantly.

“He’s just a lost lamb on the path of life, confusing life and death, thinking he could resurrect the dead. Little does he know, resurrecting the dead is not so simple, even if sanctioned by the gods, it still entails a tornt of a thousand years.”

Shard thought of Grace and Helen, he sighed:

“Let us inform the church of everything and search vigorously for Barton in the Interstice. At this point, when things have reached this final step, an end is due. If he really manages to pull a soul back from True Death through the fragile Interstice, then, no matter which channel was used, the collapse of the Interstice is probably beyond what the Divine Ritual of the church can stop. Why are the living always so keen on bringing back the dead?”

“Because the living always have too many regrets, just like you saved your priest friend… Next ti we et, I won’t let him go as I did today.”

Iluna said, gritting her teeth:

“Even if he’s incredibly talented and has unearthed such terrifying power without a ritual, in a fair fight, he would definitely be the one to die.”

She had been holding Shard’s waist but now clung to his neck, gazing into his eyes:

“Detective, wait and see. This ti, I definitely won’t disappoint you.”

Normally shy, but now fueled by her anger and the moonlit ambiance, Iluna Beath kissed Shard.

Their lips were equally wet, standing on the silent lake surface under the moonlight streaming through the valley. If there weren’t a few unconscious people floating around, the scene might have been even more romantic.

“She clearly had the strength to keep her colleagues from sinking; why did she end up falling into the water herself?”

[You better not ask that question.]
