Chapter 1468: Chapter 1466: Mortal Heart Refinent (13)
Flowers bloom and fall with the spring breeze.
Ye Dai leaned against Wang Chen, unable to move even her fingers, and suddenly began to shed tears.
Wang Chen noticed sothing unusual, lowered his head, and saw his wife silently crying. Unable to help himself, he asked, “What’s wrong? Did I hurt you?”
Ye Dai shook her head gently and whispered, “Husband, do you think I should go to Linshui Temple outside the city and pray to the Bodhisattva? I’ve heard that it’s quite effective for requesting children.”
She and Wang Chen have been married for three years, yet her belly has never swelled despite their nightly intimacy.
This matter has already beco Ye Dai’s heartache.
She had kept it bottled up inside but couldn’t help but let her true feelings show at this mont: “Or should we see a doctor and ask for a prescription?”
For Ye Dai, marrying Wang Chen was the best decision she ever made.
Over the past three years, she has been extrely happy.
But if she could not have children, if there was no way to continue Wang Chen’s family line, then such happiness was bound to dissipate!
To this, Wang Chen, half laughing and half crying, said, “Dai’er, it’s not your problem, it’s mine!”
“Ah?”
Ye Dai was stunned.
She suddenly thought that, apart from herself, Xiao Yu had also failed to get pregnant.
Ye Dai couldn’t help but feel anxious: “Husband…”
She hadn’t expected the issue to be Wang Chen himself and feared that this matter might make him sad or even angry.
“Don’t worry…”
Wang Chen, discerning his wife’s fear, gently comforted her, “I’ve been practicing the family’s martial arts, and my current level is at ‘Refining Essence into Qi,’ hence unable to have offspring.”
“Once I break through to the ‘Cultivating Qi into Spirit’ realm, there will be no such problem.”
Ye Dai was baffled: “Husband, you’re a martial artist?”
‘Refining Essence into Qi,’ ‘Cultivating Qi into Spirit,’ these terms sounded so lofty, it made her feel they were unfathomable.
Actually, Ye Dai knew that Wang Chen was not an ordinary Scholar, after all, spending three years day and night with her pillowmate, Wang Chen couldn’t have hidden it without a trace, intermittently revealing so extraordinary qualities.
But she never thought Wang Chen’s strength would reach such an unimaginable level.
“Yes.”
Wang Chen kissed her forehead: “Actually, I should have told you earlier and spared you needless worry for so long, it’s my fault as your husband.”
“No.”
Ye Dai blushed: “It was my impatience; but husband, how long will it take to break through to ‘Cultivating Qi into Spirit’?”
Surely it won’t take ten or eight years?
If it does, even the family understands, it’s hard to explain to outsiders, and will inevitably invite a lot of gossip.
Not to ntion her father, Ye Xiangming, will surely care and inquire!
“Within three years.”
Wang Chen confidently replied, “I will reach ‘Cultivating Qi into Spirit!'”
Indeed, this explanation was entirely made up to reassure Ye Dai.
In fact, although Wang Chen had practiced mortal cultivation techniques, his inability to have children was primarily due to his physique.
Despite having sealed all of his cultivation levels, his body remained the Immaculate Immortal Body, incapable of producing offspring with mortals — they are like two different species.
However, this issue can be resolved.
Wang Chen had previously seen nurous Taoist Canon and Law Books, and there were thods to resolve this.
Earlier, he hadn’t paid attention to this problem, but now with Ye Dai bringing it up, he naturally needed to focus on resolving it.
“That’s good.”
Ye Dai finally relaxed, the heavy burden on her heart was lifted, and she drifted into a sweet slumber with a smile.
The following morning, Wang Chen left ho early, carrying his fishing rod to Qingshui River outside the city.
Before marriage, Wang Chen was the most dedicated fisherman, usually spending his free ti fishing apart from teaching children at the private school.
The fish caught were also served as an extra al for students.
But after marriage, his fishing frequency drastically reduced, coupled with the busy schedule of the school’s expansion and renovation; hence managing to fish two or three tis a month was quite good.
Lately, Wang Chen realized he hadn’t cast his line for nearly two months.
But upon reaching outside the city, what t his eyes shocked him.
Outside Qing’an County, large areas of farmland along Qingshui River were cultivated, mainly growing rice crops.
Nourished by the Long River, the annual yield of rice was quite good, largely ensuring the rice price within the county town remained stable.
Yet now, looking across, most of the farmland was dried up, and many rice plants were yellowing, clearly due to lack of irrigation.
In fact, Qingshui River had not stopped flowing but the water level had seriously declined, causing the treadle waterwheel connected to canals unable to reach the surface, preventing farrs from getting water for irrigation.
When Wang Chen arrived at the riverbank, he saw a group of farrs worriedly surrounding the waterwheel, faces filled with anxiety and fear.
So farrs were using buckets tied to long ropes to fetch water from the river, but the efficiency was very low.
It was far from enough to et the water needs of the rice fields.
Wang Chen couldn’t help but ask, “Why don’t you order new waterwheels?”
An old farr replied with anguish, “Sir, you might not know, the waterwheel we have here was just ordered a few days ago, costing everyone a considerable amount. Yet, in these few days, the water level dropped quickly, alas!”
He sighed heavily, eyes full of pain and despair.
Treadle waterwheels used for fetching water are not cheap; they’re quite difficult to make and require skilled craftsn; the longer they are, the more expensive they get.
Making a new waterwheel only to find it unusable felt like a hellish joke!
Another farr whispered, “Here in Qing’an we’re considered lucky; I’ve heard the neighboring county is suffering more severely and has seen displaced people.”
Another farr grumbled, “It’s almost autumn and if it doesn’t rain soon, our rice crops here will perish too. Already the rice price in town has doubled, heaven is tornting us!”
Soone imdiately covered his mouth, “Don’t speak such nonsense!”
Is the drought this severe?
Wang Chen felt sowhat heavy-hearted.
No matter how high the rice prices rise, he has ways to ensure his family is well-fed and won’t starve because of it.
But if this drought continues, the usually peaceful Qing’an County is bound to face major issues!
Thinking about this, Wang Chen lost the mood for fishing.
He rode his large black donkey back to town and went to the governnt office to seek out County Magistrate Ye Xiangming, his father-in-law.
Given Wang Chen’s current status, eting Ye Xiangming was no problem.
And this father-in-law was quite surprised to see him.
Because in the three years Wang Chen had been married to Ye Dai, this was the first ti Wang Chen ca looking for him.
It felt like sothing big was happening.
Yet what surprised Ye Xiangming even more was Wang Chen’s reason for seeking him was the drought!
“Father-in-law.”
Wang Chen borrowed paper and brush and hand-drew a simple blueprint: “This is the self-flowing waterwheel from my hotown; it can not only adjust the depth of water extraction but also doesn’t require manual operation, making it very convenient.”
“I hope the governnt office can organize craftsn to manufacture it, to alleviate the drought and save the rice fields!”
