The next day, Ding Jinshi and Ding Long went back to the Ding Family’s place once more. Ding Long also brought his parents over to Ding Jinshi’s house. This was considered a formal eting of the elders from both families before the two got engaged. Although they all lived in the sa compound and the elders were acquainted, the formalities were necessary.
Before they entered the house, Ding Long heard his parents’ voices at the door and suddenly said to Ding Jinshi, “If my parents say anything unpleasant to you, just treat it like a fart.”
Ding Jinshi paused, “Your parents don’t like ? Otherwise, maybe you should tell your parents about the real reason behind our engagent. That way, they won’t think we’re really getting engaged. If they really don’t like , won’t I beco the cause of discord in your family?”
“No need for that. The fewer people who know the truth, the better. Even your dad shouldn’t be told,” Ding Long said, “And don’t tell Zhou Chenyue or anyone else either. Right now, only you, , and Chen Shan know; there can’t be a fourth person. As for my parents, no matter whom I marry, unless she’s the kind of woman they have in mind—soone who stays at ho like my mom—they probably won’t be satisfied.”
Ding Jinshi shrugged. She genuinely understood what kind of person Ding Long’s mother was. The Ding Family had a serious preference for boys over girls and were quite conservative in their thinking. They believed that won were born to get married, and as long as they were literate, that was enough. In the future, they just had to take care of the house and kids without needing to work or be in the spotlight.
Just like so of Ding Long’s cousins, she’d heard, those girls only went to primary school, and so didn’t even finish that. At seventeen or eighteen, they got engaged and married, then started having kids, and kept having them until they had a son. Their whole lives revolved around their kids and husbands.
Honestly, such a life was unimaginable for Ding Jinshi because she knew that Ding Long’s relatives didn’t have very good conditions. Most were from small villages or towns, living off the land. During downti, they went to the county to do odd jobs to earn so extra money. Many won had never traveled far or even taken a train in their lives.
“But today, you can rest assured. Since my parents are coming today, they won’t oppose our marriage,” Ding Long laughed. “After all, your dad’s position is there. What I ant earlier was about the future.”
Ding Jinshi nodded in understanding. By “future,” he ant that if the engagent party wasn’t successful and she got together with Lan Li instead, Ding Long’s parents would probably disapprove of her. And if the engagent party went smoothly, she would have to maintain an appearance of being Ding Long’s fiancée for half a year, aning she’d be in close contact with Ding Long’s parents for six months. Ding Jinshi thought to herself, considering how Ding Long was helping her so selflessly, she’d endure it if Ding Long’s parents said anything unpleasant.
Anyway, there were two possibilities: either after the engagent party, she wouldn’t have to interact with Ding Long’s parents, or at most, after half a year, they’d remain distant as if strangers.
Ding Long really did understand his parents. In the living room, the four elders were chatting and laughing, and the atmosphere was particularly pleasant. When Ding Jinshi and Ding Long entered, Ding Long’s mother even said, “Look at the two of them, they seem sweet as honey.”
