Chapter 1313: Chapter 1313 Ding Jinshi Missing 16
After a morning of pursuit, He Teng encountered quite a few villagers working in the mountains. This was normal; mountain villagers relied on the mountains for their livelihood. In this season, it’s not unusual to dig for wild vegetables, hunt, or chop wood. But when he brushed past a farr in his early twenties carrying a hoe, he suddenly stopped, turned around, and called out to him.
“Hello there, heading down for lunch?” He Teng saw the man stop and walked back towards him, seemingly just making small talk, “There must be lots of good stuff in the mountains during this season, right? Are you digging for wild vegetables, or sothing else?”
“Hey, you clearly haven’t worked before, right? Would anyone use such a big hoe to dig wild vegetables?” The farr put down the hoe from his shoulder, waved at He Teng, and laughed, “I’m just digging for so cool root vegetables. No luck though, I haven’t found anything.”
He Teng glanced up and down at the farr, finally focusing on the hoe he was waving in his hand, saying nothing.
It was He Teng’s gaze that gave the fake farr a jolt, thinking, did so flaw in my answer give this soldier a clue?
The fake farr kept laughing awkwardly. “Officer, if there’s nothing else, I’ll head ho. My wife and kids are waiting for for lunch.”
After saying that, the fake farr turned to leave, but noticed He Teng’s hand tightening around his gun, his heart jumping to his throat. Perhaps due to nervousness, his hand carelessly brushed over the pocket concealing his gun. Feeling the gun in the pocket gave him so confidence.
But it was precisely this seemingly careless act that made He Teng imdiately raise his gun at him.
Seeing this, the fake farr knew he was in trouble, quickly throwing aside the hoe and reaching for the gun in his pocket.
But He Teng seed to have anticipated this. The fake farr barely got the gun out of his pocket when He Teng kicked his wrist, sending the small handgun flying from his grip. The next mont, other soldiers had already pinned him down to the ground, firmly subdued.
From suspicion to capture, he hadn’t even managed to make a basic attempt at escape before he was caught.
“So it was an impostor!” exclaid a young soldier, looking at He Teng with admiration, “Deputy Commander He, we’ve encountered so many villagers this morning, how did you notice sothing was wrong with this guy?”
“The hoe.” He Teng bent down to pick up the pistol, pointing at the hoe discarded to the side.
“What’s wrong with the hoe?” The young soldier looked at the hoe on the ground, puzzled.
“Oh, Deputy Commander He, I got it!” Another soldier exclaid, “His hoe is too new, without any signs of wear, obviously just bought and brand new. It’s unnatural, since he claid to be digging roots in the mountains. The hoe is still pristine, indicating he hasn’t used it at all.”
He Teng’s suspicion arose because of the hoe, but it wasn’t just the hoe that confird it. A brand-new hoe was certainly suspicious, but it wasn’t enough to definitively prove that the person had issues.
It was the man’s attempt to stay calm while answering, pretending everything was normal. His reaction to the soldiers was different from other farrs. Others either curiously watched from a distance or avoided them entirely. Only he approached He Teng’s group directly, eyes unwavering. This reaction suggested he was guilty, using a facade of calmness to cover his fear.
