He Teng arrived at the police station morgue to find it crowded with people. Apart from Lin Chan and the others, there were also so unfamiliar faces from the capital.

"He Teng." As soon as he saw him co in, Lin Chan called out and patted He Teng on the shoulder. "Brace yourself before you take a look."

Lin Chan gave He Teng an almost imperceptible nod. His bloodshot eyes, exhausted from sleeplessness, painted a picture of soone who, at first glance, seed deeply grieved and enraged by the murder of He Zhilan.

He Teng understood imdiately—this was Lin Chan’s way of telling him to keep the act believable.

Scanning the faces, He Teng paused for a mont on Xing Ye and then glanced at Bian Xiulin, who was sobbing uncontrollably in Xing Ye’s arms, before walking further inside.

But when He Teng saw the female corpse lying there, he suddenly stopped dead, his legs threatening to give out beneath him.

"Zhilan?" He Teng nearly thought his eyes were deceiving him. The woman’s body was dressed in clothes He Zhilan had worn before, even down to the shoes on her feet. She lay there motionless. Staring at her face, He Teng was montarily lost—he couldn’t discern any differences; it truly looked as if the lifeless form before him was He Zhilan herself.

"He Teng, my condolences," Chen Yun walked up and patted him on the shoulder. "Zhilan must have realized soone was onto her, so she fled the house. But on the way, they caught up to her—a gunshot to the chest. Later, her body was pushed into a nearby river."

"Who did this? Who killed her?" He Teng’s eyes blazed red with anger, and he roared, "What happened to your promise? You swore to you’d protect her! This is what you call protection?! Say sothing! She’s gone, and all you can say is ’condolences’? She was my wife! How am I supposed to grieve her loss? I was only gone for a few days—just a few days—and now she’s dead! She was my wife, not soone else’s!"

For a mont, the only sound in the morgue was He Teng’s voice.

When the Gu Family and Lan Family arrived after hearing the news, they hadn’t even stepped through the door before hearing He Teng’s hoarse, tear-laden cries, calling He Zhilan’s na over and over. Just the sound of it was enough to make both families hesitate, too afraid to step forward.

Gu Hengyuan shoved past the others blocking his way and walked inside. What he saw was He Teng half-kneeling at the front, gripping the lifeless body and endlessly calling her na.

As his eyes landed on the face of the deceased, Gu Hengyuan’s vision went black, and he almost collapsed on the spot.

"Comrade Gu, what are you doing here?" Lin Chan was the first to notice Gu Hengyuan. His words dripped with mockery. "Could it be you couldn’t wait to see if the daughter you abandoned really ended up dead? Get out! Get the hell out! Don’t let the Lan Family and Gu Family contaminate this place!"

Behind him, Grandma Gu and Gu Mother saw Gu Hengyuan’s body sway violently. They pushed their way forward with all their might, and at almost the sa mont, they saw the corpse lying there. Both of them started trembling uncontrollably.

"The people Zhilan hated most in this life were all from your Gu Family, and in the end, she indirectly died at your hands." Chen Yun’s voice was icy. "Twenty thousand dollars—what a generous sum, Comrade Gu! Really impressive! You spent twenty thousand, and now He Zhilan, just as you wished, has been killed. Are you proud of yourselves? Are you overjoyed? Ready to toast and celebrate, perhaps? Celebrate the fact that the burden of Zhilan has finally been lifted off your Gu Family? Gu Hengyuan, your entire family is worse than animals! Even a tiger won’t eat its own cubs, so what about you?"
