"Alright." He Teng agreed without much thought. He had overheard Niu Li and Xiaojia’s conversation just now; it seed like they also needed to buy sothing that could only be found in the county.

The temperature in the mountains was chilly at night. As the two lay on the bed, close together, they chatted for a while before He Teng’s thoughts began to wander. Pulling He Zhilan close, he showered her with affection for a while, and eventually couldn’t resist and consummated their intimacy.

To be honest, hearing his little wife suppress her low moans from beneath him—out of fear that the poor soundproofing might let others hear—had a unique charm. By the ti he’d had his fill of mischief and saw his little wife turn soft as water, He Teng finally stopped, embracing her in satisfaction as they drifted off to sleep.

The next day, just as He Zhilan had guessed, He Teng woke up at the crack of dawn when the sky was still dim.

"It’s so early~" He Zhilan mumbled with her barely-open, squinting eyes.

"It’s not even five yet; keep sleeping." He Teng gently patted the back of He Zhilan’s hand. Seeing her fall back asleep shortly after, he shook his head with an amused smile—she looked just like a child, so endearing.

By five o’clock, the village was already awake. Niu Li called He Teng over to Xiaojia’s house, and together with Xiaojia and her cousin, the group of four set off down the mountain.

The descent was noticeably faster than the climb, but by the ti they finished the trek and reached the town, boarded the bus, and arrived at the county, it was already 8:30 AM. Most of the shops in the county had opened by then.

Knowing He Teng had his own matters to attend to, the three agreed on a eting ti and place before splitting up at the station.

He Teng found an inconspicuous little corner store near the station and made a phone call to Lin Chan.

Lin Chan had attended a social event the previous night and only got ho around midnight. At this mont, he was still catching up on sleep, so when he answered the call, he was grumpy. But upon recognizing the voice on the other end belonged to He Teng, he quelled his temper almost instantly.

"Crawled out of the mountains now, huh? How’s life there? Is Zhilan getting used to things?" Lin Chan knew the village didn’t even have stable electricity and was particularly worried about He Zhilan adapting to the conditions.

"She’s doing great. She loves the village. She’s basically beco ’Teacher He’ there. The village kids are all enamored with her, and she’s so busy with them every day she barely has ti for ." He Teng laughed as he replied.

"Oh ho, soone’s jealous, huh?" Lin Chan teased, finally reassured. "It’s good that she’s adjusting well. I was worried about Zhilan suffering in the village. But in truth, she’s very adaptable and adores kids. Having a crowd of them around her must make her happy. By the way, how’s her illness these days?"

"This is actually what I wanted to talk to you about." He Teng detailed He Zhilan’s recent condition and asked, "Could you speak to Zhilan’s doctor and find out whether her current state is improving or deteriorating? I’m worried that while she looks fine on the surface, the reality might be far worse."

"Alright, I’ll find out in a bit. After I get the info, how do I contact you? On this number?" Lin Chan imdiately focused, becoming deeply concerned upon the ntion of He Zhilan’s health. The long distance—far away from the capital—and the rustic living conditions added to his worry that her illness might delay treatnt.

"How about this: I’ll call you back in an hour and a half. By then, let know what the doctor said. Now tell about the situation in the capital."

"What situation could there be in the capital? Oh, the Gu Family!" Lin Chan suddenly perked up, sitting upright in bed. "A few days ago, the Gu Family issued a statent clarifying that they would not acknowledge Gu Zhilan as their daughter, claiming that He Zhilan has nothing to do with them. But privately, they hired people on the underground circuit with 200,000 yuan to take out Gu Zhilan. This info ca from Chen Yun’s contacts on the streets. There’s also a 100,000-yuan bounty from so unknown source, so altogether Zhilan’s life is worth 300,000 yuan now. You absolutely must protect our dear Zhilan!"
