"Bai i Xing?" said a woman in a nurse’s uniform. I looked up from where I was sitting in the back of the OBGYN’s waiting room.
"Here," I replied, standing up. The nurse looked around to see if anyone else was coming with , but when she didn’t see anyone, a brief look of pity flashed across her face. That was fine. I had secrets that she didn’t know.
All the other couples watched walking across the waiting room to where the nurse was standing.
It was like one step up from the walk of sha.
"Date of birth?" asked the nurse, checking her files when I gave her the answer. She nodded her head and smiled. "This way," she continued as she led down the hallway to the actual patient room. "We will have to do a few tests before the doctor cos."
I nodded my head in understanding. I had never done this before, but I had read everything I could find online about the process. She handed a cup and pointed the way to the bathroom.
When I had finished that, she then took my height and weight before finally taking my blood pressure. I hadn’t even seen the doctor yet, and I was already done. At least their tests were a lot less invasive than the Sisalik’s.
After recording the results, the nurse left the small room, closing the door behind her.
I maneuvered my way up onto the exam table and laid down, my hand resting over top of a very large baby bump. Letting out a tired sigh, I tried to get comfortable.
Midnight shimred into view, and I watched him exploring the room, studying the different posters on the wall of pregnant won and why it was important not to smoke, drink, or do drugs when pregnant.
The next one of my mates to appear was Ye’tab as he, too, started to look around the room, taking in everything. "It’s like how they described the primitive dical conditions before d labs were common," he muttered, taking the weird thing from the wall that the doctor used to check your ears.
"Gee, thanks," I grunted. "But I would like to point out that one of the main reasons why we are here is that your d labs aren’t conducive to pregnancies." That had made scratch my head the first ti Jun Li had warned not to go into the d bays on the ship.
He had cited a few tis where the lab had assud that the baby was nothing more than a parasite inside of the host body and had tried to remove it a few tis.
It sounded a lot like an urban legend to , but I also wasn’t about to take the chance.
Besides, I could use more chocolate and energy drinks.
We all turned to the door as the doorknob slowly turned. Midnight and Ye’tab quickly activated their camouflage mode just as the doctor walked in.
"Good morning!" she said cheerfully, looking up at from her tablet. "I’m Dr. Deshaye. How are you feeling?" I looked at the woman in front of . She looked to be in her 40s, her brown hair tied up in a bun, and a white doctor’s coat hid her body.
"Good," I answered with a shrug. It wasn’t like I could tell her that I was pissed and hated every mont that I was pregnant.
She smiled down at like she knew exactly what was going through my head.
"You look like you are about to pop. How far along are you?" she asked, going to sit behind her desk and turning on her computer.
"My best guess is a month and a half," I replied, taking in a deep breath as I felt the baby moving inside of .
She looked up at , startled. "I would say that you were at least 40 weeks carrying multiples. Who did you see before ?" she asked, ignoring her computer and coming to stand beside .
"No one," I admitted with a shrug like it wasn’t a big deal. But my eyes were tearing up at the look of genuine concern on her face.
"Oh, sweetie," she said, brushing back a strand of hair from my face. "You are going to be okay. I am going to make sure of it."
I nodded my head and tried to keep the tears in.
"I hate to ask, but is the father in the picture?" she murmured softly.
I nodded my head yes but didn’t comnt more. How did I really explain that his or her dad was currently sitting in the room, invisible?
"What about a support system? Do you have anyone to help you?"
I nodded my head again. Jun Li had been my support system for the past month, and he was doing a fantastic job.
"I am so happy to hear that," she smiled. "How about we listen to the baby’s heart rate first, and then we can do an ultrasound. Does that sound good?"
I felt like an idiot for nodding for a third ti, but I still did it.
Dr. Deshaye patted my hand and went to her desk to grab a machine.
I felt a warm hand on my foot, and it made smile. I didn’t know which one of the guys it was, but it reminded that even though I couldn’t see them, I was not alone.
"Do you mind lifting your shirt and lowering your pants a bit? I think you are a bit farther along than six weeks, but if that is the case, you might be having multiples," continued the doctor as she put a wand-type thing on top of my stomach just under my belly button.
That was when I heard it. A whooshing sound echoed throughout the room, and I lost the battle with my tears.
However, there was sothing wrong with her expression. Looking down at my stomach, she moved the wand to a few different places. The sound continued, intermixed with sothing that even I could identify as a heartbeat, even if it sounded super fast.
"Is everything okay?" I asked, a note of concern in my voice. I beca even more stressed as she didn’t answer . Placing the heart rate thing back on her desk, she picked up the phone. "Hello? Yes, can you bring the ultrasound machine to exam room 3? Thank you."
