973: Chapter 978: A Beautiful Coincidence 973: Chapter 978: A Beautiful Coincidence Yang Yi understood why people liked vintage cars because of sentintality, but he would absolutely never choose to buy one to drive, not because he couldn’t afford a vintage car but acquiring one for collecting was acceptable, yet driving one daily was out of the question.

The steering wheel had a significant amount of play, aning it wasn’t very precise, and the power wasn’t much to speak of; after all, it was an old car and completely unable to satisfy Yang Yi’s need for power.

However, driving such a vintage car did indeed turn heads, especially a well-maintained one.

Though old, its shiny body, full of last century’s charm, truly garnered intermittent honks of tribute when driven on the road.

Yang Yi drove the old car to the distant suburbs of Los Angeles.

The urban area of Los Angeles was very, very large and quite spread out.

Following the GPS, Yang Yi arrived at an address he had previously looked up.

Buying the car had taken longer than expected, so by the ti Yang Yi drove to his destination, it was already evening.

But Yang Yi felt that the timing was just right, as it was soon to be night, the person he was looking for should also have finished work and returned ho.

Yang Yi slowed the car down, started paying attention to house numbers, and then he parked on the roadside, next to the exit path of a house.

The house was not bad, the sort that only the middle class could afford, but it showed so signs of decline, evident from the upkeep of the lawn.

The grass on the lawn was too high, but no one had tended to it.

The reason was simple: if you had to rush to work every day, naturally there wouldn’t be any ti to ticulously care for your own lawn.

No lights were on in the room, so Yang Yi decided to wait in the car.

Feeling sowhat nervous, Yang Yi couldn’t help but smile.

Now that he was quite worldly, it was curious that he felt nervous about eting an old acquaintance—probably, he surmised, due to a guilty conscience.

Just as Yang Yi decided to get out of the car, he saw the lights in the house turn on, followed by the door opening.

A man ca out, walked to a modern sedan parked by the garage door, and opened the car door.

That car was really beaten up, and the man could only be Clint.

Clint had just opened the car door, but he didn’t get in.

Then he looked straight toward Yang Yi, and as if he had discovered a new continent, he ran over hastily without even closing the car door.

Yang Yi watched Clint from the car.

Clint hadn’t seen Yang Yi yet; his gaze was completely drawn to the car Yang Yi was driving.

Clint stopped in his tracks, covered his mouth with his hand, and then stood by the curb, chin resting in his hand, immobile, with what seed like a glint of tears in his eyes.

Too far to see clearly, Yang Yi took a deep breath and then he opened the car door, stepping out swiftly.

As Yang Yi closed the car door, Clint’s gaze finally shifted to him, and he widened his eyes in shock, dropping his right hand that was covering his mouth and instinctively reaching for his waist.

Clint looked sowhat panicked and backed away several steps.

It was easy to understand—seeing a prisoner whom he had kept watch over for years, an escapee still on the wanted list, a prisoner who had ruined his life—suddenly appear before him certainly wouldn’t make him feel as if he’s eting an old friend.

“Hey, don’t be nervous.”

Yang Yi’s prepared icebreaker was no longer applicable; he could only start by calming the tense Clint.

Clint’s hand grasped at nothing because he didn’t have a gun at his waist.

In California, where firearm regulation was strict, very few people could obtain a concealed firearm permit.

“It’s you!

What do you want!”

Yang Yi spread his hands and spoke solemnly, “Just wanted to see how you’re doing, buddy.

Don’t be nervous.”

Clint retreated another two steps and then said gravely, “We have nothing to talk about.

Listen!

I don’t know how you found , but I don’t want anything to do with you anymore.

I won’t harm you, and I will call the police after you leave.

Now, please leave my house imdiately!”

Yang Yi shrugged his shoulders, then he sighed and said, “Don’t be nervous, and don’t misunderstand, I an no harm, umm…

alright, I’ll just show you then.

Don’t worry, I’m not reaching for a gun.

I’m getting my ID out for you.”

Clint was standing over ten ters away from Yang Yi, poised as if to flee at any mont, but he dared not run right away, so he really was quite nervous.

Yang Yi reached into his suit’s inner pocket, and just then, soone opened a window and shouted impatiently, “Clint, who are you talking to?

You’re running late!”

Clint turned and yelled, “Shut up!

Grab the gun.

If soone enters, shoot to kill!”

Clint seed ready to go all out.

He didn’t want his family to get hurt.

Yang Yi had already taken out his ID and called out helplessly, “CIA!”

Clint paused for a mont, and Yang Yi spread his hands and said, “Don’t get wrong, buddy, I’m with the CIA!

Tell your wife not to call the police and avoid unnecessary trouble.

Go back inside now, tell her it’s an old friend, not so prison escapee.

If the cops co, it’s going to be a hassle to send them away.

Now turn around, go ho, and do as I say, quickly.”

It was getting dark, and from a distance, Clint couldn’t make out the ID in Yang Yi’s hand.

He said warily, “CIA?

Don’t move, throw your ID over to .”

Yang Yi exhaled and then really did throw the ID, landing it at Clint’s feet.

Clint picked it up, glanced at it, and stood frozen.

Yang Yi called out loudly, “Do you really want to bring the police here?”

Still sowhat skeptical, Clint suddenly turned and ran back into the house.

A short while later, Clint ca back out, this ti holding a handgun in his right hand and pointing it at Yang Yi.

Yang Yi said, resigned, “Buddy, don’t do this.

Look at the car I drove here.

Don’t you understand what has happened?

It’s for you.”

Yang Yi raised his hands, holding two sets of car keys.

He shook the keys and said in a firm voice, “Catch the keys.

Go check out the car.

I know you sold your Camaro, so I bought you another one.”

Clint had the gun in his right hand and the ID in his left, so he wasn’t able to catch the keys as they fell to the ground.

Looking down at the keys on the ground, Clint paused for a mont, and then he finally tucked the gun into his waistband and bent down to pick up the keys.

Putting away the gun instead of the ID indicated that Clint had co to believe Yang Yi’s identity.

Yang Yi relaxed and smiled, saying, “Buddy, go check out the car first.

I hope you like it.”

Clint stood still for a while, seemingly lost in thought.

Finally, he walked past Yang Yi, approached the car, and then with an expression as if in a dream, he said, “This is my car, my car!

You brought her back.”
