58: Chapter 57: The Test 58: Chapter 57: The Test Yang Yi didn’t have to wait long, he had just started eating his own al when a black man with a tray sat down next to him.
“Hey, mate, I’m Buddy.”
Buddy had a likable baby face, he was short and chubby, with a friendly smile on his face that gave a good impression.
Yang Yi knew this Buddy was the kind of insider who knows everything in prison, it seems that every prison movie has such a character, and in reality, such roles do exist, because where there is demand, there will be a market, and naturally, soone will step up to fill that role.
“Hello Buddy, my na is Benjamin, nice to et you.”
Yang Yi gave a brief self-introduction, but it made Buddy do a double-take, prompting Yang Yi to ask, “What’s up, mate?
Any problem?”
Buddy suddenly asked with curiosity, “That’s a British accent, right?
Are you British?”
Yang Yi hesitated for a mont, then nodded, “I’ve lived in the United Kingdom for so ti.”
Buddy’s face lit up with excitent, “Say it again, say it again, is that a London accent?
So sexy!”
Yang Yi frowned, he didn’t think there was anything sexy about his accent, but indeed, his British accent was quite strong, and he really couldn’t manage an Arican accent, especially since there were many slang terms he couldn’t quite understand, and this could be a problem.
“Mate!
Mate, say sothing else.”
Looking at Buddy’s eager eyes, Yang Yi cleared his throat and in a tone he thought was perfectly normal, said, “Hello, mate!
Pleased to et you.”
Buddy had already promoted Yang Yi from pal to mate, and upon hearing Yang Yi’s words he looked extrely excited, slapped his thigh happily and laughed, “Haha!
That’s a British accent, right?
That’s it!
I knew it!
My cousin must have gone to a fake London, he doesn’t sound anything like that!”
Yang Yi gave a forced smile and said, “The accents in London are quite different too, the East and West Ends vary, uh, it’s complicated.
So, do you have sothing you want to talk to about?”
Buddy nodded and then pointed at Yang Yi, whispering, “You’re in trouble.”
“Yes, I’m in trouble.”
Buddy took a bite of his bread and then said with a smile, “There were several new guys today, I can’t spend too much ti with you.
I ca to tell you what you can get from .
I’ve got cigarettes, lighters, things the prison store doesn’t offer.
If you want information, co to .
Oh, even if you want the hard stuff, I can get it.
Just like that, mate, nice to et you, I’ve got to go.”
After Buddy finished speaking, he stood up to leave.
Yang Yi called out urgently, “Wait, wait!
Is that all?”
“Is there sothing else you need?”
“How do I handle my current troubles?”
Buddy scratched his face, looking a bit troubled, then whispered, “Mate, I strictly adhere to a principle of neutrality.
You’ve made Boxing King very angry, he will have to teach you a lesson.”
Yang Yi looked back and saw the black man who had been collecting slices of at for others place his tray in front of a very muscular black man and then point at him while saying sothing.
The one with the tray was a bit player; the one sitting at the table, who was staring Yang Yi down, was the boss.
When he t Yang Yi’s gaze, the seated black man suddenly gave a faint smile.
Instinctively, Yang Yi smiled back, a natural response, but then he saw the black man make a throat-slitting gesture across his own neck.
Yang Yi imdiately turned his head back and whispered, “Is that the Boxing King?”
“Yes, that’s the Boxing King.
He really is a boxer, and a good one at that.
Buddy, there’s so basic knowledge you ought to know in this prison—don’t ss with the Boxing King’s gang, don’t ss with the big guy’s gang; those are the two African gangs.
Then there’s the Venom Gang, the Latinos who deal drugs.
Also, steer clear of Hell’s Minions; they’re not many but they are tough, the whites with skulls tattooed on their bodies.”
Yang Yi frowned and said, “So I’ve offended the Boxing King, right?
I want to know how to resolve this trouble, and also, who can I afford to provoke here?”
Buddy laughed and then shook his head, “Man, the people here are pretty much a part of these gangs.
Those who haven’t joined a gang, well, your buddy Chris here is one of those non-aligned individuals, but you’d best not provoke him either—he’ll stab you with a knife.”
Yang Yi exhaled and said helplessly, “Alright, so there’s no one I can provoke.”
“Not necessarily, there are so of the most wretched scum that you can kick, like those in for rape.
What’s your charge?
How many years?”
“Intentional injury, five years.”
“Oh, that’s not too bad.
That’s how it is, buddy, I can’t linger here too long, or I’ll hinder others from coming to talk to you.
If you need sothing, find —I guarantee fair prices.”
As Buddy was about to leave, Yang Yi called out urgently, “Wait, who’s going to talk to ?”
Buddy shrugged his shoulders, smiling, “Whoever takes an interest in you will co find you.
That’s the way it goes, buddy.
Good luck.”
Buddy hurried off, and Yang Yi let out a sigh and then continued eating.
Yang Yi didn’t count on Chris helping, but he hoped at least Chris would fill him in on the situation.
However, his cellmate seed completely unwilling to help and wouldn’t say more than necessary.
Yang Yi gave up on getting information from Chris and would have rather gotten it from Buddy, but just then, Chris suddenly said, “Here’s so advice—don’t join any gang, or you can forget about ever getting out of it for the rest of your life.”
Yang Yi was stunned for a mont, then he whispered, “Why?
Join what gang?”
Chris didn’t respond anymore, but quickly wolfed down what was on his plate.
Yang Yi shook his head and began eating his bread.
Just then, soone else sat down in front of him.
A Latino with face full of tattoos stared intently at Yang Yi and said in a deep voice, “What’s the charge?”
“Intentional injury, five years.”
The tattooed Latino, with a stern face, said, “The Boxing King will kill you.
If you don’t want to die, you only have one choice—join the Venom Gang.
We can protect you, but you must pass a trial to join our gang.”
Yang Yi understood what Chris’s advice ant.
He turned his head back again to look.
He felt that even if the Boxing King was that bad, he surely wouldn’t kill him in the yard; after all, this was prison, and causing serious injury would only extend one’s sentence.
But when Yang Yi looked back, he imdiately understood why because beside the Boxing King was a young African Arican who had arrived in the sa vehicle as him that day—a new guy.
If joining the Venom Gang required going through a trial, did joining the Boxing King’s gang require one as well?
Yang Yi sighed, because he felt he was that young African Arican’s test.
