Chapter 1245: Chapter 1250: Not What I Expected
Excitent, nervousness, unease, and a hint of anticipation.
Except for Petrov, everyone seed to be feeling sothing different, yet sohow strikingly similar.
Chris finally arrived, looking visibly distressed. Compared to everyone else, his nervousness was utterly paralyzing—it even made it hard for him to speak coherently.
“You guys… I… should we leave now?”
“We’ve been waiting on you. Get on the plane already!”
Pushing Chris onto the private plane, Yang Yi eagerly shouted, “Take off, let’s go!”
The plane ascended swiftly. Since the airport was quite small, Yang Yi’s plane had priority for takeoff.
Chris took several deep breaths before finally turning toward Yang Yi, saying, “I…”
Pausing mid-sentence, he glanced at the eager eyes behind him, seated in a neat row. Chris was almost moved to tears as he choked up and said, “I’m really nervous, but seeing everyone here makes feel so touched. I’m so grateful for how much you all care about my situation. Thank you, everyone.”
Was it love? Was it care? Sure, but more than that, it was… boredom. Pure, unadulterated boredom!
Xiao Ran couldn’t hold back, asking, “So, have you thought of a plan to win your ex-girlfriend’s heart back?”
Chris froze for a mont before quickly shaking his head and replying, “No, I haven’t. I don’t know. I hadn’t thought about it. No, wait, I’ve thought about it, but I haven’t figured it out yet. Umm…”
Just as Yang Yi was about to chi in, Bonnie interjected with a serious face, “Your ex-girlfriend is still in prison. You could rescue her, you know, like a superhero.”
Chris instinctively nodded but then imdiately turned to Yang Yi, asking, “Is she okay? Did you find that out?”
“I haven’t yet, but she’s fine. She should be fine, right? Have you thought about what to do? I an, have you decided what to say to her when you’re at the prison?”
Chris, overwheld with tension, stamred, “I haven’t decided what to say. I feel like a prison isn’t really the right place for a reunion. Sure, getting her out might look like I’m rescuing her, but that could hurt her pride, and I don’t want to do that.”
Xiao Ran coughed lightly before saying, “You’re giving this a lot of thought. So, have you planned what to do next? Are you two going to get married?”
Chris hesitated all over again.
At that mont, Xiao Ran continued, “Your son isn’t exactly young anymore, is he?”
Chris hesitated even more.
After a long pause, Chris coughed and said softly, “Marriage isn’t necessarily a must, right? I an, I just want to know she’s doing well. It doesn’t have to an marrying her again.”
Xiao Ran froze for a mont, then suddenly had an epiphany, saying, “Oh, I get it. Now that you’re rich and successful, she’s not good enough for you anymore, is that it?”
Chris quickly waved his hands in denial, his face wracked with turmoil. “What if she stopped loving a long ti ago? I know she hasn’t been happy, but what if she’s already forgotten about ? Am I supposed to use a ton of money to make her fall for again, marry again, and bring our son along? No, I don’t want that.”
Xiao Ran was montarily stunned into silence.
In real life, there aren’t that many perfect love stories.
The majority of love stories end in tragedy, don’t they?
A fiery, all-consuming love that ends in tragedy is still better than one descending into an unmanageable farce, isn’t it?
This is why Chris’s worries are realistic. They’re normal.
Yang Yi sat down beside Chris and patted him on the shoulder with a smile, saying, “If you still love her, then everything else becos simple, doesn’t it?”
Chris hesitated and stamred, “So many years have passed. I used to want to prove myself, prove that I could make sothing of myself and make her father regret everything. But now that I think I’ve proven myself, I don’t feel the need to boast about it anymore… Besides, her father’s already bankrupt. I just want to see her, figure things out, but I don’t even know if I still love her—or if it’s just an obsession.”
Well, things clearly weren’t turning out as anyone had expected. Even though Chris’s current mindset was perfectly reasonable, the problem was that everyone had been eagerly anticipating a beautifully tragic love story that ends in bliss.
The group exchanged a few awkward glances before Anton broke the silence. “What’s the point of overthinking this right now? Does it an anything? Just et her and then decide. At the very least, see her before discussing anything else.”
The mood grew a bit heavy. What was happening didn’t align with the romantic narrative everyone had been rooting for. Talking about it now felt inappropriate—it would place undue pressure on Chris, potentially forcing him into insincere choices.
Everyone on the plane, even if not a trained psychologist, had an intuitive grasp of human emotions. They knew when to speak and when to stay silent.
So no one pressed the matter further.
The topic shifted to random, casual chatter until the plane landed in San Francisco.
Once off the plane, Chris didn’t look too well. Though he kept his words to himself, his alternating bursts of excitent and lancholy betrayed the storm of activity in his mind.
At this mont, it had to be Anton, that scoundrel, who had the most experience to offer.
“Alright, tell what you want to do. First, let ask, do you intend to let her know you’re rolling in money now, that you’re down-and-out, or that you’re just an average Joe?”
Chris was a conman. While not a psychology expert, he knew how to exploit psychological weaknesses. Yet now, he looked at Anton like a complete fool.
“Does it make a difference?”
“Yes. If you’re rich, it speaks for itself. If you’re down-and-out, she might despise you, or she might take pity on you. Playing the roles of either a rich man or a vagrant is extre. If you want to see her true self, pose as an average guy.”
Chris instantly replied, “Average guy!”
Anton breathed out in relief. “Good. You’ve decided to play the role of an average Joe. That ans a change of clothes is in order. Beyond that, will you bail her out of jail yourself, have soone else do it, or wait for the cops to release her? It’s more or less the sa thing—asking the police to let her go just needs a convenient excuse. Actually, it doesn’t even need an excuse. Won typically won’t overthink these matters.”
Chris responded without hesitation, “Of course, she’ll get a clean release. No bail, and nobody else involved.”
Anton looked at Yang Yi, prompting him with a glance. Yang Yi imdiately said, “Got it, I’ll make the call.”
Yang Yi picked up the phone and said, “Hey, buddy. I need a favor…”
Anton grinned at Chris and said, “Now it’s simple. Go change into sothing a regular guy would wear, make up an ordinary identity—that should be easy for you—and then wait for her outside the police station.”
Chris hesitated for a mont before murmuring, “Why don’t you help co up with a story? I’m just… not in the right headspace right now…”
