Head Steward Wen sneered. The unintended suppression by the presence of a few individuals with disabilities fueled his shame and anger, causing him to lose control. He bellowed, “You’re all colluding. Naturally, you’ll say that!”
“I won’t lie.” Zheng Sangge handed over a dark red, weathered oilcloth bag, stating coldly, “Lord Qin will understand when he sees it.”
Head Steward Wen’s forced smile grew more malicious. He retorted sharply, “What? Are you attempting to bribe right in front of me?”
Shao Yunduan sneered, “What can you expect from a hog but a grunt!”
“What did you say?”
“To smear someone and hurl insults—what can you expect from a hog but a grunt?”
“You…”
Lord Qin intervened, coughing. “Bring it up.”
Since they presented it personally, he had to inspect it himself.
The oilskin bag was swiftly placed before Lord Qin. As he opened it, he casually picked up a folded piece of paper and glanced at it. His expression underwent a drastic change.
He glanced at the others, his eyes widening, and his hands trembling involuntarily. His expression became indescribably plex, revealing inner turmoil.
Head Steward Wen and his nephew were left stunned, perplexed by the unexpected turn of events.
Observing Lord Qin’s reaction, Head Steward Wen, usually confident, struggled to maintain posure. He exchanged glances with Shao Yunduan, who remained stoic. Head Steward Wen put on a fake smile and addressed Lord Qin, “Lord Qin, what is the matter? Has Lord Qin found something?”
Lord Qin, torn by conflicting emotions, raised his eyebrows and replied, “Why don’t we temporarily halt the proceedings and investigate further?”
It was a mon phrase used in governmental offices.
It implied that the case was not suitable for public interrogation. Why not transfer it to the back hall and discuss it in detail…
Zheng Sangge barely hesitated; instead, he seemed to sigh in relief and promptly expressed his agreement. “Certainly… but it’s at Lord Qin’s discretion.”
Shao Yunduan glanced at Zheng Sangge, paused briefly, and stated, “I have no objections either.”
None of them raised objections. That left only Head Steward Wen.
However, he appeared somewhat hesitant.
Before he could voice his thoughts, Wen Fuxin interjected, “No! Why can’t we conduct the interrogation openly? Is someone trying to manipulate things covertly? Hmph, dream on!”
If everyone agreed, he felt pelled to disagree. There had to be something fishy.
Wen Fuxin thought as much, and Head Steward Wen, initially harboring suspicions, found assurance in his nephew’s proclamation. “Exactly. Lord Qin, there’s no harm in being forthright!”
Lord Qin regarded Head Steward Wen and his nephew with pity. It seemed they might not prehend the consequences of their actions.
Since they were resolute in their stance, why not fulfill their wish?
Having already suggested the idea, and with their rejection, Lord Qin felt justified. Even if the Fourth Prince were dissatisfied, he couldn’t be blamed.
“In that case, it’s settled!” Lord Qin rose, bowed slightly, and cupped his hands towards Zheng Sangge. “General Zheng, please proceed.”
General Zheng?
What kind of general was this? Did they mishear, or did Lord Qin misspeak?
Head Steward Wen and his nephew exchanged bewildered glances, attempting to discern each other’s expressions as if questioning the accuracy of what they heard.
The onlookers were also taken aback.
The surrounding moners were left in shock, their gasps audible.
“What?”
“What did Lord Qin say just now? Did you hear that?”
