The Deputy Prefect’s wife relinquished her pursuit of revenge against Qiao Xuan and Shao Yunduan, not out of disinterest but due to the realization that such an opportunity would never present itself. Qiao Xuan’s cutting words had left her feeling deeply embarrassed, and the prospect of further humiliation deterred her from attempting any retaliation.
A palpable sense of danger emanated from Qiao Xuan; she recognized him as soone not to be trifled with. Offending him was a risk she couldn’t afford to take, and the humiliation he inflicted had been a bitter lesson.
Fueled by resentnt, she redirected her animosity toward Qiao Wei, despising her to the core. That audacious woman dared to orchestrate her downfall! If not for the fabricated news she relayed, the Deputy Prefect’s wife reasoned, she wouldn’t have acted impulsively, and Qiao Xuan wouldn’t have slapped her in public. It was akin to inviting others to witness the assault, a blow to her dignity she couldn’t easily stomach.
While still contemplating ways to exact revenge on Qiao Wei, a startling event unfolded that night. An assassin infiltrated the relay station and attacked Shao Yunduan. Imperial physicians rushed to attend to him, leaving Qiao Xuan in a state of panic. Witnessing Shao Yunduan’s pallid face, she succumbed to the stress and fainted.

The relay station buzzed with activity as lights illuminated the chaos. People were thrown into disarray.
Sun Bai and his comrades, along with Ah-Ye and a dozen guards, pursued the assassin, but the assailant left behind traces and managed to escape into the Deputy Prefect’s courtyard.
The Deputy Prefect and the Prefect resided at the rear of the governnt office. Although provided accommodations at the relay station, the Deputy Prefect couple continued to reside there, enjoying the magistrate’s favor and additional territory.
When Sun Bai, Ah-Ye, and the others stord in, the Deputy Prefect couple naturally erupted in fury. However, the sight of bloodstains in the courtyard brought panic to their faces.
Quick-witted, the Deputy Prefect’s wife imdiately asserted that this was Lord Shao and Madam Shao’s act of vengeance. According to her narrative, they must have orchestrated a covert plot to sar the courtyard with bloodstains and then frad them.
Enraged by these allegations, Sun Bai, Ah-Ye, and the others vehently responded.
Sun Bai snapped, “Our lord barely survived an assassination attempt, with the imperial physician currently working to save her. Madam was so terrified she fainted on the spot. Nurous brothers have tracked the assailant all the way here. Additionally, bailiffs from your governnt office are stationed to guard the courier station. Everyone witnessed a black-clothed infiltrator with their own eyes, yet Madam Qin is playing the bla ga! She’s truly cunning and malicious! Brothers, let’s find the assassin and expose her deceit!”
The Deputy Prefect, in a state of panic, protested, “You can’t search!”
Upon learning of Shao Yunduan’s grave injury, shock overca the Deputy Prefect and his wife. Madam Qin, too frightened to speak further, recoiled.
Sun Bai sneered, “Why not? Are you shielding the assassin? It seems Lord Qin is implicated with the assailant!”
“What baseless accusations! There’s no truth to that!”
Sun Bai retorted, “It might not be so! Although we’re unsure of the motive, it’s evident that both of you harbor animosity towards our Madam and Madam. Madam Qin has repeatedly caused trouble before. It’s not surprising if you seek revenge. You can’t escape suspicion! Lord Qin, even if it’s to clear your na, step aside! Otherwise, it looks like you’re protecting the culprit!”
The Deputy Prefect found himself speechless, well aware that his wife’s antagonistic actions toward Shao Yunduan and Qiao Xuan were glaringly apparent to everyone.
