Chapter 171: Revitalised
Derek was having what was probably the strangest day of his life. It was passing with both the speed of a snail and the swiftness of a lightning strike. That made absolutely no sense. But it was the best way, that he could think to put into words exactly what he was experiencing. His eyes did not hurt, his head was not pounding away, and his movents were sure and steady. He did not have to coach his body through what it had to do in order to move. That was sothing that he’d never had before.
He read through multiple docunts, signed where his signature was needed, and finished off tasks without putting in as much effort as he normally did. Given the amount of work that he had completed, whenever Derek checked the ti, he expected to find the day nearly half gone. But at most whenever he looked up he would find that an hour had passed, and he would be shocked. Blinking a few tis to make sure that he had not imagined the numbers on the screen, but each ti his eyesight was proven to be accurate.
Had his lack of sleep really been bothering him that much? To the point where he had beco so slow on tasks, without even realizing it? Shaking his head, Derek went back to work. He worked and he worked. And by the ti that midday ca around, he looked up and realized that there was nothing more for him to do that day. Sohow he had completed the day’s tasks and his schedule was completely free. He could go and look for more work to do. That was never a problem. But Derek found himself hesitant.
Leaving his office ant that he would no longer be so close to Emily, and for so reason that day he did not want to do that. Even as he had been busy working, from ti to ti he would look up and stare at his door, knowing that Emily was just on the other side, helped to soothe sothing in him.
When they had decided to share a bed again, Derek had been hopeful, but hesitant, worried after too many failed attempts at trying to sleep. But he had still given it a go. After all, a chance was still a chance. Then when they had gone to bed, she had fallen asleep easily enough. Leaving Derek alone with his thoughts, staring at the ceiling and thinking that the whole thing had been so sort of fluke. That he was dood to keep being awake no matter what he did. Derek had felt a depressing level of disappointnt. But sohow, being next to Emily had worked its magic, and before he had known it, Derek had been asleep. And in experiencing that miracle once more, thanks to her, sothing in Derek had shifted. He had always been fond of Emily. After all, what was there not to like about her? She was competent, she was respectful, and she always had his back whenever situations were tense. Not only that, she always seed to know exactly what to say to get Derek’s mood out of a slump when he was too deep into his thoughts.
Now that he had confird for sure that Emily was sohow able to make him go to sleep and stay asleep for hours on end. There was a softness that ca over him whenever he thought of her. Throughout the day in the brief tis that they had seen each other. Derek had felt his heart, do this little sorsault as though it were trying to reach out to her.
He had put his hand over his heart so many tis, that at one point she had asked if he was alright. He had told her that he was fine, that it was simply heartburn. And then a glass of water and so dicine had materialized out of nowhere. Despite not having heartburn. Derek had felt himself warm from the inside. Good old Emily, always so thoughtful.
Feeling a sappy smile stretch across his face, Derek tried to shake it off, but it was impossible. He closed his eyes, trying to rember exactly how Emily had felt in his arms, the warm weight of her, her overall softness. Her curves against his hard muscles. They had gone to sleep touching each other respectfully, but sohow, when they had woken up, they had been pressed close together. Derek had no idea how that had happened, but he was grateful.
For hours on end, he had gotten to hold soone through the night. And that was a rare experience for him. Sitting at his desk, Derek let his mind wander through the events of the night before. Going round and round those few seconds, when he had been awake enough to register Emily’s warmth in his arms.
It had felt amazing.
Like holding a warm towel, a fresh warm towel in his hands. It was a horrible description, and he was pretty sure quite a few authors and poets would be disappointed in him. But the softness of her had been sothing else. A dopey smile on his face. Derek leaned his head against the back of his chair and stared up at the ceiling, rembering it all. Sohow, hours must have passed with him just letting his mind wander because the next ti that Derek looked at his phone, it was ti to go ho. Normally, he never left work early, but that day he decided to make an exception.
As he packed up his things and made his way to his door, Derek realized sothing.
He had simply assud that he and Emily would be sleeping together again that Friday night. He had never asked, and when he realized that, his heart had suddenly felt like it was in his throat. What if she said no? That she did not want to, that Thursday night’s sleep was more than enough for her?
What if she wanted to but she could not? She had prior plans that she was unable to get out of. Suddenly feeling panicky, Derek had opened the door. He’d found Emily there. And trying to be as casual as he could, he had brought up the topic of sleep.
When Emily, who clearly understood what he was asking, even if he was not being direct about it, replied positively, he could have broken out into a song and dance then and there. But, keeping with his cool deanor, he simply gave her a slight nod and made his way out the door, walking at a leisurely pace. It was only once he was in his car that Derek allowed himself to celebrate. He did a fist bump so great, one would have sworn that he had just won a boatload of money at a gambling den.
