Disciple Shu Xiaoling was a very suitable sort of girl, in Sectmaster Ping’s opinion. She was neither too old nor too young, pretty but not too pretty, diligent and attentive yet retaining youthful liveliness and spontaneity. Her cultivation, at Level Seven, was neither too high nor too low. She ca from a middling sort of family with long ties to the Bamboo dicine Hut, respectable without being influential. She was a capable spiritual gardiner, given her limited level and experience, and knew so thods the sect didn’t make public without actually knowing any of the core secrets. Best of all, she had a decent little foundation in the Art of Wind and Water- fad for being powerful and subtle, while lacking almost any offensive capability.

Just right for selling as a concubine.

Shu would be a nice extra to seal the deal on selling the sect and securing the best terms for everyone involved. Not a marriage alliance, exactly, but it would build so closeness and fondness. Since all they had were soft thods, it was worthwhile. They certainly couldn’t survive on their own. The pressure was already unendurable, and with the core of the Ancient Crane Mountain sealed away, the remnants couldn’t possibly keep predators away from his Bamboo dicine Hut.

Selling the sect, coming in under a new hegemon, was regrettable, but only regrettable. A wise man changed with the tis, and the disciples would doubtless see the necessity of it eventually. Even Shu. It might even be good for her. Going from a sowhat promising disciple in a second tier sect to a concubine for a princeling of a rising power like the Radiant Dawn Sect would co with enormous benefits.

Probably. Depending on her behavior. Heavens only knew his own concubines had ways of parting him from pills and elixirs! She seed the sort who liked to please others.

Shu made a decent cup of tea, for soone in the Earthly Realm, and always laid out the snacks very prettily. He’d been having her attend him for the last few weeks, just to keep an eye on her. It helped to build a sense of familiarity and reliance in advance, so she wouldn’t make a fuss and would obediently follow his arrangents. The Bamboo dicine Hut had never had the strictest discipline. It would be a tragic waste if she just ran off.

“Disciple, you seem troubled. Is sothing the matter?” She always looked a little troubled, but tonight it was more obvious. A good ti to build reliance.

“Yes, Sectmaster. I keep hearing about sects pressuring us, trying to force dicine or pills or healing from us. The guards have kept us safe, but I have to wonder how much longer they can hold out.”

Oh, how nice. If she was already fearful, that would make it so much easier to steer her to sothing safe, if a bit unwanted. “Don’t worry, don’t worry. Yes, it’s scary out in the world. But even if the sky is falling, aren’t there tall ones to hold it up? Your seniors are already making arrangents. There will be changes. Such is life. But so long as we are living, aren’t we winning?”

She bowed deeply. “Disciple thought too much.”

“Why don’t you brew a fresh pot, I could do with a nice cup of tea.” He smiled.

“Gladly, Sect Master.”

She busied herself breaking a piece of his good aged white tea off a tea cake, putting it in the tea pot, warming the pot with hot water before filling it…

“No, no, Little Shu. How many tis must I remind you? Smile. Smile as you serve. Tea is a warm drink, so be warm. Smile. Pour smoothly, not too quick, not too slow. Never splash or make a ss. Be delicate with the pick, use the tongs like chopsticks lifting the most thin skinned dumplings imaginable. Graceful, gentle, and always smiling.”

She smiled. It wasn’t quite radiant, and it didn’t really reach her eyes, but it was wide enough. It would do. “Good, good. It’s worth practicing in the mirror, if you must.”

She delivered a fragrant cup to his hands. He might criticise her deportnt, but he had nothing bad to say about her brewing skills. Thanks to his Heavenly grade tea leaves and Heavenly grade water, it was an entirely acceptable drink. He sipped it, smacking his lips happily and enjoying the old familiar flavor. Soon he was looking at the bottom of his favorite cup, the one with the chrysanthemum painted on it.

“Tell , little Shu, which of the Four Noble Ones do you favor?”

“The plum blossom, Sect Master.”

“Really? You always struck as one who favored orchids.” He lifted his cup for her to refill. She made no move.

“I did. They are out of season now.”

The sectmaster gasped, clutching his chest. His tendons started popping, the cup shattering in his hand. His throat swelled, and his eyes rolled up. Dozens of items fell from his storage ring, boxes of spirit stones, precious dicines, talismans, weapons, herbs and manuals she wasn’t qualified to even know about, let alone glance at the cover of. He thrashed, so of the things on the ground stirring without ever rising from the floor.

Shu waited until his body stopped seizing, then waited longer, the length of ti it took a stick of incense to burn. Every now and then she looked upwards, like she was expecting sothing that never ca. Then she held her own ring over the pile of fallen goods. A single letter, neatly folded, written in the Sectmaster’s fine handwriting, fell on top of them.

“Soone co quickly, there is sothing wrong with the Sect Master!”

Her screams were, everyone later agreed, quite heartfelt.

A week later, a delegation from the Radiant Dawn sect was t with a raised sect-defending array. Obscuring mists covered the valleys and hills of the Old Bamboo dicine Hut, and the faint dicinal aroma on the breeze did not inspire feelings of comfort. They were t by a half dead old man, a patient from the hospital, no less. He explained that, tragicly, Sectmaster Ping had committed suicide, overco with sha at his inability to defend the sect and shaming the teachings and examples of the ancestors.

The ruined man sounded like he was describing a stranger failing to buy the best fish at the market, quite indifferent to it all.

Leadership had fallen to the Hospital Director, supported by the leaders of the dicine Compounding Hall, The Grand Alchemist, the Disciplinary Elder and the Chief of Guards, as well as most of the Heavenly Realm cultivators, including those who were patients in the hospital. The Bamboo dicine Hut was willing to trade with all, but would remain sealed behind its wards. If soone managed to force the wards, so sorry, but the fields were all undermined with explosive arrays, poisons, and even the flow of energy through the whole valley would be sabotaged, ruining it for future cultivation. The dicine storehouse was even more thoroughly prid for destruction.

The losses, simply put, would far outweigh the gains for any invader. But they were quite open to trade. On the right terms. Being farrs, they really didn’t need much from the outside world. Safety? Security? In this day and age, did such things even really exist? They would look to themselves for safety, from now on. The days of relying on the benevolence of the mighty were quite done.

While the foreign delegation was raging in front of the sect gate, Shu made her way to the washing room behind the kitchen. There were big tubs of hot water there, so filled with bowls and dishes, others with sudsy water and laundry. The operation was overseen by their newest batch of recruits. Once, the older won would simply have been servants. Now, they were disciples. Mostly not very good ones, but cultivators nonetheless.

The golden-eyed children they brought with them were very good cultivators indeed, racing through the levels of the Earthly Realm like they were nothing at all. Though, their ntality was a bit… special. As were the cultivation chants they shared like they were cherries stolen from an overburdened tree. And the one adult male in the group was very ‘special’ indeed.

“Kiddo, I don’t know how often I have to tell you. I will make it very plain. The purpose of a fish trap is to trap fish. When the fish is caught, the trap is forgotten. A rabbit snare snares rabbits. When the rabbit is caught, the snare is forgotten. Words convey anings. When the aning is conveyed, the words are forgotten. So the fact that I forgot ans I understood it perfectly, and that ans I know more than you!”

“Bleh, bleh! Uncle Discombobulated is a fake diviner, can’t rember where he put his shoes, bleh!”

“Why you imp! Ask yourself, do I even need shoes? Can my feet be any cleaner or more comfortable than to be bathed by all this warm, sudsy water? anwhile, you are running around miserable in your soaking shoes! a fake diviner? Why then you must be a fake cultivator! So kind of immortal you are, Bleh, bleh!”

A long, pointy spike of hair, a little wilted from the steam, tilted backwards as a hodgepodge face looked heavenward for rcy. “Oh, when will I et the person who has forgotten how to speak? They are the person I really want to talk to.”

“Ah! It’s Auntie Shu!”

“I’m twenty, you brat!”

“Sounds middle aged to , Auntie!” The impish golden-eyed child laughed and ran off when she took a swipe at his head. When she turned back to the aptly nad Outspread Discombobulated, she found him nodding at her.

“So, what brings a middle aged auntie like yourself to the laundry? I have to warn you, doing the laundry and washing up is not a job just anyone can do. Don’t expect to get you in the back door just because of our old acquaintance!”

“I’m starting to wonder why I ca myself.” Shu didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. It was always this way with Outspread and his mysterious charges. He seed busy, without ever actually doing much beyond turning up promptly for als. And yet, despite being manifestly useless, he was remarkably easy company. She had t him once by accident, and ever since, she found her way to the laundry when she was miserable.

“Maybe it was for the steam. Very good for the lungs, steam.”

“My lungs are fine, thank you.”

“No they aren’t. You look like you are choking.”

The image of Sectmaster Peng choking to death flashed in front of her eyes. She snapped “I am not choking! Fool!”

Outspread shook his head. “You are definitely choking. If you were breathing properly, you would have your shoes off.”

The sudden delivery of such high grade nonsense knocked the mory clean out of Shu’s head. “What?”

“Your shoes. The true n, and I suppose the true won, of the old days all breathed from their heels. The others, this sad, modern generation, all breathe from the gullet. Getting all choked up as argunts and useless thoughts co vomiting up. Can’t breathe through vomit. Must breathe through the heels. That’s what you call dicine.” He nodded very wisely.

“Maybe I need so. I’m suddenly feeling a bit dizzy.” Shu shook her head.

“See, this is what I an. The true n of old, and I suppose the true won too, all slept deeply without dreaming and woke without worries. They ate simple als, took things as they ca, and treated death like life- sothing they didn’t ask for, but could still lightly accept. anwhile, you are stuck trying to breathe from a gullet clogged with too much nonsense.”

Discombobulated made an expression and a posture that, possibly, maybe, was intended to be preening. “Unlike , who gets by eating soft rice. I sleep very well, and breathe very easily.”

“Hah. It’s not so easy.”

“It’s very easy.”

“The world is a war zone, Old Discombobulated. Everywhere is hell, the Mountain is sealed away, and now I’m a… I’m… soone who doesn’t know who she is or what the hell to do with myself!”

Outspread shook his head, fortunately not putting anyone’s eye out with his spike of hair.

“Too much useless thinking, too many words, not enough aning. Listen, I will say it very plain.”

He leaned in, then frowned, dragged over a wash basin, turned it over, stood on it, then leaned in again, managing to co face to clavicle with Shu. He raised an instructive finger. “A fish is born in water. A man, and I assu won too, probably, are born in the dao. Fish find the shady parts of ponds, the bits under ledges and rocks, and everything they need is there. You can tell it is, because the slippery bastards are always hanging out there, not moving around.”

The instructive finger started wagging reprovingly, giving her shoulder a real telling off. “Therefore, all a man, and potentially, maybe, a woman, needs to do is imrse themselves in the dao. Find a shady spot and don’t move around. Don’t send your thoughts racing around uselessly, don’t worry about taking action or making plans, just let the currents flow past you as you remain safe and comfortable in your shady spot.”

Shu couldn’t stop the giggles building up and escaping from her. “All a fish needs is to get lost in the water, and all a woman needs is to get lost in the dao, is that it?”

“Yep. Maybe. Probably. I think. Look up at the mountain. They are all useless up there, with nothing to do but contemplating their navels and eating what they can scrounge. Good behavior to imitate.”

Shu shook her head and wiped away a tear from the corner of her eye. “Yeah. Stupid to try to be them, but stupider to not learn from them. No use yelling at the clouds. I can’t cut them with a sword or stab them with a spear, or cure them with a pill, but can’t I defy the heavens with an umbrella?”
