Nina Thorne took the sanitary pad to the bathroom.

Her concerned voice ca through the crack in the door. "How late are you?"

"About ten days?" Serena calculated the ti. It should be about ten days.

Nina asked again, "So, have you gotten it yet?"

"Not yet."

Nina went quiet. After she was done, she washed her hands, opened the door, and ca out, staring at Serena.

Serena suddenly panicked. "Should I go see a doctor?"

Nina nodded. "You’re about ten days late and still nothing. You should get it checked out. You might be pregnant or sothing."

"Huh?"

Serena was stunned.

Nina smiled and walked toward the living room. "What’s with that look? You’re a married woman now. Isn’t it normal to get pregnant?"

"No, that’s impossible. He always uses protection. How could I be pregnant?"

’Besides, I haven’t even been with that old man that many tis.’

’I must be overthinking this. How could I be pregnant?’

"Serena, accidents can happen even when you take precautions."

Nina sighed, glancing at her son beside her. "He was an accident, too."

Serena was speechless.

"How about this? You stay here, and I’ll go out and buy a pregnancy test for you. They’re pretty accurate."

Seeing how pale Serena was, Nina stood up to put her at ease.

Serena nodded hastily. "Okay, please hurry back."

"The pharmacy is right at the community gate. I’ll be quick."

Nina left.

Serena walked to the sofa and sat down, her mind suddenly in a daze.

’I can’t be pregnant.’

’I reminded that man that I didn’t want to have children.’

’He said he was childfree, too.’

’So it must be a problem with my own body, nothing to do with pregnancy.’

Serena kept telling herself not to let her imagination run wild. She would know for sure once Nina ca back with the test.

But she was restless.

She was scared and found it hard to accept.

The little boy next to her noticed her anxiety and asked curiously, "Miss Serena, what’s wrong? Are you not feeling well?"

Serena quickly shook her head. "No, I’m fine. Leo, you should do your howork."

"But you look so pale."

"Maybe it’s just hot. I’m going to get so air by the door."

Just as Serena stepped outside, Nina returned with the pregnancy test. She took it out and handed it to Serena.

"It’s very simple. Just follow the instructions. When you’re done, bring it out and let see."

Serena took the test and rushed to the bathroom.

A mont later, she ca out with the test and handed it to Nina.

Nina glanced at it—two red lines. She raised her hand, patted Serena on the shoulder, and laughed. "Serena, you’re pregnant."

"What do you an?"

"You’re pregnant."

"Impossible."

Serena denied it flatly.

Nina was curious about her reaction. "What’s wrong? Is being pregnant a bad thing?"

"He promised ! He said he was childfree and didn’t want kids! How could he let get pregnant?"

Serena couldn’t accept this reality.

She suddenly beca agitated, losing control of her emotions as she stord out.

"Serena..."

Nina chased her to the door, but rembered her son was inside and didn’t go after her. Instead, she quickly took out her phone and called Ethan Yardley.

The mont he answered, she blurted out, "Ethan, where are you?"

"I’m at the office. What’s wrong?"

"You need to co back right away! Serena’s pregnant, but she doesn’t seem to be able to accept it. You need to get back here and be with her."

Ethan was speechless.

’Serena’s pregnant?’

’She’s... pregnant?’

After a mont of daze, Ethan snapped out of it, grabbed his jacket, and rushed out of his office.

He had just been thinking that they should wait a couple of years and enjoy their life as a couple before Serena got pregnant. He never expected the surprise to co so suddenly.

Even he was caught off guard.

On the way back, he eagerly pulled out his phone to call Serena.

Serena ran ho, wanting to confront Ethan, but he wasn’t there. She sat on the sofa, recalling the things Sylvia Schuyler had told her before.

The more she thought about it, the more terrifying it all seed.

Her phone on the coffee table rang. She picked it up, suppressed her anger, and answered the call.

Ethan said excitedly, "Serena, wait for at ho. I’ll take you to the hospital as soon as I get back. Don’t run off, okay?"

"Fine!"

She replied with just that one word before hanging up.

’He’s a liar.’

’He’s not childfree at all. He must have tampered with the condoms.’

’He wanted to get pregnant. He wanted to have his child.’

’I’m not even twenty-one yet. I’m still in school. How could he let get pregnant?’

’Besides, it’s only been a few months since my miscarriage, right? And then I was hospitalized with serious injuries after that.’

’I haven’t even been fully recovered for long, and now he’s putting this burden on my body again.’

’All he really wants is a child. He doesn’t care about my body or my situation at all.’

Sitting there rigidly, thinking about the things Sylvia Schuyler had once told her, Serena closed her eyes as tears stread down her face.

When Mrs. Miller ca over with a plate of fruit and saw her crying, she asked with concern, "Miss Serena, what’s wrong?"

Serena quickly wiped her tears away and looked at Mrs. Miller.

"Mrs. Miller, how long has it been since my miscarriage?"

Mrs. Miller calculated the ti. "About three or four months, I think? Miss Serena, are you not feeling well?"

Serena shook her head, her eyes still filled with tears. "Do you know Sylvia Schuyler?"

Mrs. Miller nodded. "Of course. She even lived here with you for a while, Miss Serena. Have you forgotten?"

Serena was speechless.

’Sylvia Schuyler actually lived here with for a while.’

’Wasn’t she Ethan’s ex-fiancée?’

’An ex-fiancée and a current wife... Why would Ethan have them live together?’

’And then there was my accident...’

Serena suspected that Ethan had kept her around back then just because he wanted her to have his child. She must have been unwilling, and in the end, she was driven to attempt suicide by jumping into a river.

After her suicide attempt, Ethan was filled with regret and sent Sylvia away.

Otherwise, Sylvia would never have sought her out later to tell her all those things.

Hah!

’Oh, Serena, Serena. You’re so stupid.’

’Your only purpose is to bear that man a child. That’s why he doesn’t care about your body, your age, or the fact that you’re still in school while getting you pregnant.’

’Why would you give a man like that what he wants?’

’Why would you stay by his side?’

She lowered her head, fighting to control her emotions and hold back her tears.

’I’ll wait for him to co back and see how he explains himself.’

Ethan was ecstatic. The mont he walked in and saw Serena sitting on the living room sofa, he disregarded everything else, walked over, knelt in front of her, and grasped her small hands with a gentle laugh.

"You’re having a baby? Let’s go. We’ll go to the hospital for a full check-up."

Serena coldly shook his hand off. Her gaze was filled with hatred as she looked at him.

"You like babies a lot?"

Ethan was thrilled and nodded. "Of course..."

But as soon as he answered, he realized sothing was wrong. The smile on his handso face vanished, and he looked at her, nervous and guilty, asking in a low voice,

"Serena... what’s wrong?"

"Aren’t you childfree? Why do you like babies, then?"

She stared at him, demanding an answer.

Ethan suddenly had a bad feeling, and the expression on his handso face grew grim.

Serena asked again, "Did you tamper with the condoms?"

She rembered the first ti she got drunk and slept with him. The next morning, she had asked if he used protection. It was only because he said yes that she didn’t go buy the morning-after pill.

Every single ti after that, she reminded him.

And he had done as she asked.

She couldn’t believe she could get pregnant so easily under these circumstances.

There was only one possible reason: he did it on purpose.

"Serena, what do you an by that?" Ethan asked back.

Serena pushed him away and shrieked angrily, "I’m asking if you did it on purpose! Ethan, you knew I didn’t want to have a child!"
