With exams coming up, Serena forced herself to calm down and study.
If she didn’t think about him and that woman, her heart wouldn’t ache so much.
Just then, the door to their dorm room was pushed open. Kylie Cross rushed in, panting, and stood beside Serena, exclaiming excitedly,
"Serena, quick! Soone’s downstairs looking for you."
Serena turned to look at Kylie. "Who is it?"
"It’s Gabriel Galloway. He’s here for you again."
Serena was speechless.
Gabriel Galloway...
The man hailed as the school’s most handso scholar and campus heartthrob, a current graduate student.
To think he’d disappeared for two months, only to co back now.
Serena refused without hesitation. "I’m not going."
"But why? He’s Gabriel Galloway! Our school’s heartthrob! The line of girls chasing after him is a mile long.
But he only has eyes for you. How can you have absolutely no interest in him?"
Serena said, "I already have soone in my heart."
"What? You have a crush on soone? Who is it?"
Kylie asked eagerly, her eyes fixed on Serena.
Serena looked at her and said very seriously,
"If I get the chance, or if it turns out we’re destined to be together, I’ll introduce him to all of you. But I really don’t like him."
’If she had known that saving Gabriel Galloway in that car accident would cause him to develop feelings for her, she definitely wouldn’t have been such a busybody and sent him to the hospital.’
He was such an outstanding guy, yet he was hopelessly stubborn, completely impervious to reason.
"Fine, I’ll go tell him for you. Boo hoo hoo, what a sha. Such a great guy, rejected by our Serena just like that."
Kylie said this, feigning tears as she walked out of the dorm.
As Serena was about to return to her book, the phone beside her rang.
It was Mrs. Miller.
Serena answered, "Mrs. Miller, what’s wrong?"
"Oh, it’s nothing major. Mr. Yardley just called to ask how you were doing. You are doing well, aren’t you, Miss Serena?"
Serena fell silent.
’If he was so concerned about her, why didn’t he call her himself?’
’Was it inconvenient? Or was he afraid Sylvia Schuyler would mind?’
Despite the bitterness in her heart, Serena forced a smile and said,
"I’m fine, Mrs. Miller, you don’t need to worry. The holidays are starting soon. I’ll co back and keep you company then."
"Good. As soon as you go back to school, Mr. Yardley stops coming ho. It’s a real sha for an old woman like to live in such a big house all alone."
"It’s all right. I’ll be there to keep you company every day from now on."
After hanging up, Serena once again forced herself to focus on her book.
Just as she had settled down to study, her phone rang again.
Thinking it must be Mrs. Miller having forgotten to say sothing, she picked up the phone without checking the caller ID and answered,
"Hello, Mrs. Miller? Was there sothing else?"
"It’s . Don’t you check your caller ID?"
The man’s deep, magnetic voice instantly lifted Serena’s spirits.
She glanced at the caller ID. It was indeed him.
Only after making sure no other roommates were in the dorm did she call out, "Uncle..."
"Mm. Have you had dinner?"
"Not yet."
"Co out. I’m at the school gate."
Serena was surprised. "You... you’re not at the hospital anymore?"
"I had to make so ti to be with you."
A warmth spread through Serena’s chest. She hurriedly put away her textbook, straightened her clothes, and said into the phone, "Okay, I’ll be right out."
After hanging up, she wanted to run.
But then she rembered the baby in her belly and slowed her pace.
On her way out of the dormitory building, she happened to run into Kylie Cross.
Kylie stared at her. "What are you doing down here? Don’t tell you changed your mind and decided to see Gabriel? He just left."
Serena shook her head. "No, I just need to pick sothing up at the school gate. See you later."
Kylie frowned. Watching Serena walk away, she shook her head helplessly.
’That girl is so lucky to be liked by him, but she doesn’t even give him the ti of day.’
’Sigh, why don’t the rest of us have that kind of luck with guys?’
...
When Serena reached the school gate, she imdiately spotted a familiar car parked on the side of the road not far away.
She quickly walked over.
The driver got out and respectfully opened the car door for her.
As Serena got into the car, she looked at the man beside her. He wasn’t in a suit, just a dress shirt and vest, but he was as clean-cut and handso as ever.
She called out softly again, "Uncle..."
"Mm. What do you want to eat?" The man’s voice was gentle as he raised a hand to brush the stray hairs from her forehead.
"Sothing light is fine," Serena said casually. "Anything works."
She had read online that there were many things you couldn’t eat when you were pregnant.
So, she had to be selective about her favorite foods, like hot pot, seafood, and certain ats.
Ethan Yardley understood and told the driver to go.
They ended up at a Western restaurant, in the most exclusive VIP private room.
Ethan ordered all of Serena’s favorites: light but exquisite dishes that most won loved.p>When dozens of dishes were brought to the table, Serena was baffled. "Uncle, you ordered so much. How can the two of us possibly finish all this?"
"Just eat as much as you can. You seem to have lost more weight recently. Is it because you’re unhappy and have lost your appetite?"
Serena looked at the man beside her and saw that his face was haggard, too.
She knew he was exhausted, working all day and then spending his nights at the hospital with Sylvia. She didn’t dare bla him or show any dissatisfaction.
She didn’t want to fight with him anymore and make herself look like a shrew.
She felt very Zen about it now; what was ant to happen would happen.
So, she decided to let things take their course.
Ethan watched Serena’s subdued expression, his own face filled with pity.
"Serena, I know you’re upset about Sylvia’s appearance. It’s my fault I didn’t tell you about her sooner. If you’re feeling..."
"Uncle, what are you trying to tell ?"
She was suddenly filled with a sense of foreboding.
Even though she thought she had co to terms with everything, she was still terrified of what was to co.
Ethan looked at her and said,
"Sylvia’s injuries are healing quickly, but she still can’t see. The doctors have advised her to recuperate at ho, so I might move in with her."
Serena froze.
Her chest tightened, and for a mont, she thought she might stop breathing.
’He finally took the initiative to pick her up from school for dinner, and it was just to tell her this?’
’Her husband, the father of her child, was going to live with another woman?’
Serena lowered her head, fighting back the urge to cry.
Ethan placed a hand on her head. Seeing her miserable state, his heart ached, and he added, "So..."
"What exactly do you owe Sylvia? Why does soone as powerful as you have to give in to her like this?"
Serena cut Ethan off.
