Chapter 398: Chapter 398: Deciding to Participate
“I said, when will you stop haunting us?”
Lu Yi had bought a pack of paper and a bottle of water. After paying, he stepped out of the convenience store only to spot an unwelco guest. He imdiately rushed forward, shielding Shen Heyu.
He positioned himself between Pei Yansi and Shen Heyu. Lu Yi was a gentle-natured person who rarely confronted others, but he had faced off against Pei Yansi several tis for Shen Heyu.
Pei Yansi didn’t have the energy to waste on such a minor character. He just furrowed his brow fiercely, a trace of irritation flashing in his eyes.
He had seen Shen Heyu and Lu Yi shopping for clothes together and felt a hint of crisis in his heart, always fearing that sothing he dreaded would happen.
“I’m here to see my ex-wife; it has nothing to do with you. Move aside,” Pei Yansi said coldly, making Lu Yi frown.
“I’m telling you, you two are over. And you’re about to marry another woman soon. I hope you have the self-awareness to not disturb her peaceful life now. She doesn’t want to see you.”
Lu Yi kept emphasizing that their past was over and that Shen Heyu had started a new life.
Pei Yansi took a deep breath, his gaze towards Lu Yi growing even colder while Shen Heyu, standing in the sunlight, felt as if she had fallen into an icy cavern, her hands clenching involuntarily.
“Lu Yi, he ca today to deliver an invitation,” Shen Heyu said, sensing an imminent conflict and grabbing Lu Yi’s sleeve—an action that, to Pei Yansi, felt like a bomb had been dropped on his heart.
In an instant, a fierce fire seed to burn in Pei Yansi’s words as he impatiently tugged at his tie.
His eyes on Shen Heyu’s hand gripping Lu Yi’s sleeve were almost tangible.
“What invitation?” Lu Yi asked, still wary of Pei Yansi.
“His and Chen Lingng’s engagent, inviting both of us to attend,” Shen Heyu said calmly, her voice even.
But Lu Yi didn’t believe him at all. He snatched the two invitations from Pei Yansi’s hand and opened one. Indeed, the nas Pei Yansi and Chen Lingng were on it.
“This isn’t so trap, is it? I’m telling you, we won’t go.”
Lu Yi didn’t believe that Pei Yansi had truly let go of Shen Heyu—n understand n best.
He knew from the way Pei Yansi looked at Shen Heyu that his possessiveness was still very much alive.
“I’ve tolerated you for a long ti. You’d better shut up,” Pei Yansi said coldly, glancing at Lu Yi. He had co here to see Shen Heyu and to talk to her.
“Now that you’ve invited us to your engagent party, you should watch your tone, or we won’t go,” Shen Heyu asserted, pulling hard enough to make Lu Yi step aside.
“Will you go?” Pei Yansi’s expression darkened instantly.
“We’ll have to discuss this back ho. If we decide to go, I will send you a ssage,” Shen Heyu replied calmly, then she pulled Lu Yi and they walked away.
“We were supposed to go to the mall, weren’t we? Let’s not waste any more ti with him.” Shen Heyu was worried that if Lu Yi kept confronting Pei Yansi like this, it would sooner or later lead to big trouble.
Lu Yi frowned, looking at the two invitations in his hand, feeling as if he were holding a hot potato.
“Do you really want to attend his engagent party with Chen Lingng? I always feel like their visit this ti is not well-intentioned. I think there’s a catch; we might as well throw these two invitations in the trash.”
Lu Yi raised his hand to throw the invitations into the trash can, but Shen Heyu grabbed his wrist, stopping him.
“Wait, don’t throw them away yet.”
When Lu Yi heard Shen Heyu’s words, he stopped and looked at her with concern and disbelief.
“Have you forgotten how hard it was for you to leave Pei Yansi initially, and how the Chen family pressured you to leave? Their invitation to the engagent party is definitely not well-intentioned.” Lu Yi was worried that Shen Heyu might be hurt if she attended the engagent.
Shen Heyu gave a faint smile, took one of the invitations from Lu Yi’s hand, and opened it to see the nas inside were sowhat glaring.
“Of course, I know their invitation to the engagent party is not well-intentioned, but if I avoid going, the Chen family might think I am still not over Pei Yansi and that I still have feelings for him. It’s better to go.”
Shen Heyu said these words calmly, but her heart felt as heavy as lead.
“But…” Lu Yi cared for Shen Heyu, and even though she appeared calm and collected, he knew she was suffering inside.
“There are no ‘buts.’ Only if I let the Chen family know that I’ve completely cut ties with Pei Yansi will they stop targeting in the future.”
“Otherwise, if they keep bothering , I don’t mind, but I don’t want them to disturb Yuexue.” Shen Heyu slowly closed the invitation again, raised her head in the sunlight, and gave Lu Yi a comforting smile.
Lu Yi sighed. Shen Heyu was always like this, keeping everything to herself. Even though he had been by her side and cared for her for so long, she rarely opened up about her worries.
“Actually, I wasn’t planning to go, but since you are going, I’ll just have to put myself out and accompany you. I need to protect you.”
Lu Yi clenched his fists. Even though there was still so ti before Pei Yansi and Chen Lingng’s engagent, he was already fully alert.
Shen Heyu smiled, lifting her hand to pat Lu Yi on the shoulder.
“Why bother? You’ve always disliked them, so why insist on going to their engagent party? Just don’t go. I can handle it myself.”
Shen Heyu didn’t want Lu Yi to force himself for her sake, and she planned to just make an appearance at the engagent party to let the Chen family see her determined to leave Pei Yansi.
“Going to their engagent party would be like walking into a tiger’s den. How could I rest easy? Besides, I want to protect you and Yuexue. If you were to get hurt right under my nose, what kind of man would I be?”
Shen Heyu felt warmth in her heart. She smiled at Lu Yi with curved eyes, “Thanks to your care, Yuexue and I have been well taken care of all this ti. You don’t need to force yourself anymore.”
“It’s not forcing myself. As long as it makes you and Yuexue happy, even if it ans walking through fire and water, I am more than willing.” Lu Yi lifted his hand and scratched his head.
Shen Heyu paused when she heard his words, and then she laughed out again.
