The weather forecast was accurate; it predicted rain around 2 p.m., and it did rain.
But the weather forecast was also inaccurate; it said the rain would last about an hour and a half, but it poured all afternoon and only stopped in the evening.
Wei You had left early, Chen Jinhai went out to run errands for Shang Hexing, Be Sheng didn’t co back, leaving only Wen Zhi and Shang Hexing in the vast Qionglou.
Wen Zhi looked up at the night sky outside the courtyard, pondering if she should hail a cab herself since Chen Zhu hadn’t returned with the car.
But where was Shang Hexing?
She hadn’t seen him for almost two hours.
Worried that it was getting late, Wen Zhi went upstairs to look for Shang Hexing. After not finding him anywhere, she reluctantly headed back downstairs. Passing by the fishpond, she heard his voice from the side, “Looking for ?”
Wen Zhi turned around.
There was Shang Hexing standing on the other side of the fishpond, now dressed in a gray polo shirt and casual shorts, looking as if he had just showered after a workout.
It turned out Wen Zhi was right.
Approaching her with a white towel in hand, Shang Hexing had a faint scent of shower gel. Wen Zhi asked, “Where had you been?”
Shang Hexing, “Next door at the gym. Have you been looking for
long?”
“Not too long,” Wen Zhi shook her head, her gaze uncontrollably drifting over him.
He was very disciplined, his body well maintained, without overly exaggerated muscles nor too lean, perfectly proportioned—slim clothed and well-defined when unclothed, probably with abs…
Wen Zhi’s eyes lingered on Shang Hexing’s abdon.
“Looking at what?”
His voice ca through, and Wen Zhi quickly turned her face away, pretending to look elsewhere, “I was just thinking…”
Before she could finish, Shang Hexing walked past her, “What do you want to eat?”
Wen Zhi turned to keep pace with him, “Mr. Shang, are you inviting
to stay for dinner?”
Shang Hexing, placing the towel over his shoulder, responded, “It’s up to you.”
Wen Zhi said, “Mr. Shang, actually I ca to tell you it’s getting late, and I should be heading back.”
Shang Hexing acknowledged with a hum but said nothing more, heading straight to the kitchen.
Wen Zhi was unsure of his intentions; what did just a hum an? It would be okay if she just left, right?
She felt conflicted, but after agonizing for a while, she followed him to the kitchen regardless.
“Mr. Shang, Mr. Sh…”
Wen Zhi stopped at the kitchen doorway.
She saw Shang Hexing taking vegetables and eggs out of the fridge, ready to cook himself. Wen Zhi stood frozen, quite surprised, “Mr. Shang, you can cook?”
Shang Hexing smiled faintly, “What kind of question is that?”
Wen Zhi looked puzzled.
Shang Hexing explained calmly, “I was in the military for six years; there, there’s nothing you don’t learn.”
Wen Zhi’s expression changed from puzzled to enlightened.
To reach Shang Hexing’s current position, one must have served in the early years, as everyone climbs step by step. Only he was more outstanding—a born leader.
Shang Hexing paused his activity and asked her, “What would you like tonight?”
The words of refusal that hovered on the tip of Wen Zhi’s tongue turned around and went back down, her fingers twining behind her back, “Whatever Mr. Shang makes, I’ll eat. I think, Mr. Shang’s cooking won’t be too bad.”
Shang Hexing looked at her deeply, “Do you really trust my cooking?”
Wen Zhi pursed her lips, “Or does it an I have to cook?”
Shang Hexing chuckled, “If you want, you can help out a little.”
Wen Zhi internally cursed her earlier words. She should not have said that and ended up having to help out stiffly—offsetting the ‘al cost’ with labor, which also eased her conscience sowhat.
“Mr. Shang, I wanted to ask you sothing.” While helping wash the vegetables, Wen Zhi casually broached the subject.
Shang Hexing responded, “Hmm.”
Wen Zhi paused her task, “Do you know about my family situation?”
