I continued to watch them from a close distance, listening to them banter. My real goal was to wait until the next shipnt arrived, the one they said was ’important’.
Suddenly, a number of footsteps ca running over.
"Boss, the man is still here. His car is still in the parking lot, but we couldn’t find him during our sweep."
Karl frowned. His eyes squinted as he looked around.
"Quickly, do a thorough sweep of the area. Sothing is telling this man is snooping around here," he ordered as he looked around the area.
Shit. They’re going to find if they look over here.
I was impressed with Karl’s instincts. It was no wonder that he’s been able to escape from so many rounds of prosecution; his innate instincts to detect danger were too good.
"Yes, sir!" The ard n shouted before scattering once more.
Observing their movents, I waited until one of the n ca my way to sweep through the boxes before darting behind another box.
"Hmm? Who’s there?" the ard guard shouted, looking in my direction.
I crouched behind the box and held my breath, hoping that the rain would cover my sounds. The guard took a few steps towards where I was hiding.
My hand was already gripping the handle of my pistol, ready to shoot if I was discovered.
The bright light from the guard’s flashlight passed over my head.
"Hmm, must’ve seen wrongly," he said, and walked away.
I let out a sigh of relief but remained vigilant. There was no choice, I had to get out of here. Based on what I could tell with Karl, he wouldn’t stop searching until they found . Thankfully, I was able to gather enough information tonight to continue my search.
If everything I heard remained accurate, I had a good chance to infiltrate the auction house next week during their ’special’ auction.
As soon as the guard turned the corner, I ran out from behind the box, running straight for the open shipping container opposite . My goal now was to simply make it out of this shipyard alive.
Luckily, all of the guards split up in different directions. This allowed to only have to pay attention to the closest ones as I moved from cover to cover, until I reached the long corridor between shipping containers.
If they spot now, there’s nowhere to hide.
The shipping containers were stacked too high for to attempt to climb up, and from what I could see, none of them were open. This ant that it would only take one look for the guard to spot , and there would be nowhere for to run to.
I waited at the entrance of the long stretch, calculating when the best ti for to make a run would be.
Three, two ....one...now!
The closest guard finally turned the corner, giving a small window of ti to sprint down the corridor as fast as I could.
I ran as fast as I could. The rain was already seeping through my jacket, soaking my shirt to match the rest of my body, but I didn’t care. The only thing on my mind was to keep running as fast as I could so that by the ti they spotted , I would already be a good distance away.
The rain intensified, pelting across my face as I continued to run. The entire ti, my hand was resting on the pistol in my pocket, ready to shoot the mont the need arose.
I made it about halfway down the long corridor when the light from a flashlight brushed over .
"Hey, you! Stop right there!" A guard shouted.
After weighing my options in my head, I ca to a halt and turned to face the direction of the flashlight.
The guard with the flashlight walked over slowly, allowing the other guards to catch up. A few minutes later, I had multiple guns pointed at .
"Don’t move or we’ll shoot!" he shouted.
I stayed still, observing them closely. My hand was still inside my pocket, gripping my pistol.
The guard who spotted walked over slowly. "Why are you here? Don’t you know this place is off limits?"
"I...I’m only here to check on my shipnt. I’m not here to cause trouble," I said, faking a panicked expression.
He walked over slowly, stopping only when he was within arm’s length of .
"Oh yeah? Do you have any proof?" he asked, looking at fiercely.
I quickly fished out the shipping docunts from my pocket, hoping that they would be enough to convince him.
He grabbed the docunts out of my hands, reading them thoroughly.
"Container 3210-B," he shouted.
All but one other guard imdiately scattered.
"Let’s see if you’re telling the truth. If this container isn’t in the vicinity, I’m going to have no choice but to put a bullet through your head," he said with a sadistic tone.
His eyes had a look of excitent. He wanted to shoot; there was no doubt about it.
My heart began to beat wildly in my chest. I had no idea where this shipping container was. It could easily be on the opposite side of the port for all I knew.
If it’s not nearby, do I feign ignorance? Say I got lost?
Sothing told that he wouldn’t listen to any excuses. If the container wasn’t nearby, then I was done for.
I could try shooting my way out of it, but my one pistol against multiple ard n with automatic rifles wasn’t the best odds of success. Plus, there could be more than just this group of guards lurking in the area.
Every mont that passed felt like a lifeti. If they didn’t co back soon, it ant that the shipping container wasn’t nearby.
The guard lifted his hand to take a look at his watch.
"It seems like your container isn’t near here. Tell , where exactly was it?"
I could feel the bloodlust emanating from him. I was re seconds away from being shot.
Looks like I’ll have to try my luck at a shootout.
Just as I was about to pull my pistol out of my pocket, one of the guards ca running back.
"I found it. Container 3210-B is right on the other side of these containers," the man said, quickly.
A look of surprise flashed through the guard’s eyes. "Are you certain?"
"Yes, sir. I verified it a few tis. All of the tags have it clearly marked."
He finally turned to face . "Looks like you haven’t been lying. Today’s your lucky day. Now get the fuck out of here before I change my mind!"
I quickly nodded and ran. There was no reason for to stay and tempt fate. The look in the man’s eyes told everything I needed to know. These people weren’t normal; they enjoyed killing.
