Looking at Feng Jieyun in such a weak state, Shang Ruohai felt anger rising in his chest.
"You were so stupid," he snapped harshly. "Did you think that you were made of steel and wire? What could you have achieved when you blocked the chandelier in my stead?"
On the bed, Feng Jieyun smiled gently through layers of bandage. His eyes seed to be veiled by a curtain of tears.
Or was it his own?
Shang Ruohai let go of Feng Jieyun’s hand and pushed himself away from the bed.
"Don’t go," Feng Jieyun’s hoarse voice ca from the bed. "Stay with ... Please."
"..."
That was the least, and sadly also the last thing he could probably do for Feng Jieyun.
Shang Ruohai blinked away the tears in his eyes before he returned to Feng Jieyun’s side. He gingerly took Feng Jieyun’s hand in his and squeezed it.
He looked the man in the eyes.
So many years of acquaintance, and yet he knew nothing of Feng Jieyun’s contribution in his life.
A person’s kindness was like water pouring out onto the ground. When the water was still there, no one paid it any attention. Only after it was spilled on the ground did anyone take notice.
Shang Ruohai was no different.
No matter how often, how desperately Feng Jieyun reached out to him, he never cared even one bit.
There was no friendship, only rivalry.
All for the sake of taking the CEO position for himself.
How was he any different from Shang Ruohan or Shang Xiaoyi...?
"I am sorry," he choked out a second ti. "I am sorry for everything. Your brother told everything. I didn’t know. I truly didn’t know."
Feng Jieyun squeezed back at his hand and sighed.
"I didn’t do it to see you cry," he said in one go before he broke into a violent cough.
Shang Ruohai hastily assisted him while rubbing his back carefully.
"Shang Ruohai, do you know?"
Feng Jieyun stared at Shang Ruohai.
"I fell for you the mont I laid my eyes on you."
Shang Ruohai chuckled at himself in a derisive manner.
"Really? The CEO of Yunhuan Entertainnt liked that much?"
"Yes," Feng Jieyun confird. "You... you were so radiant on the stage. You were... born to be a star."
"Heh. I should have joined Yunhuan instead of CNC, then. Maybe my life would be much better."
Feng Jieyun’s smile widened.
"Maybe," he agreed. "But... We both know that... You were ant... To... Take the CEO position... So..."
The man’s breathing beca more and more haggard. Shang Ruohai’s tears fell across his cheeks.
"Stop talking," he said. "What is the use of telling all these things?"
"I... I want you to know that... It wasn’t ... That night... The drug..."
"I know," Shang Ruohai hastily cut him off. "I know it wasn’t you. It was Shang Ruohan. I believe you."
Relief spread across Feng Jieyun’s face.
"It was... My fault..."
"I shouldn’t... Have... Looked at you... So obviously... That bastard knew, so... In the end, it was... Still my fault... I am so sorry..."
"No."
Shang Ruohai shook his head again and again. "It wasn’t your fault. Stop saying that it’s your fault."
Four years of enmity turned out to be a complete waste. Fate played a trick on the both of them. And now, Feng Jieyun’s ti was slowly running out.
"If... If only..."
Feng Jieyun cried as well.
"... I have... more ti...Shang Ruohai... Would you... Agree to give ... A chance...?"
Shang Ruohai nodded without hesitation.
"If you survive this ordeal, I will go as far as accepting your marriage proposal. Feng Jieyun, I am not just saying this because of the current circumstances."
"... Really...?"
Feng Jieyun’s eyes shook, his lips trembling from unconcealed joy.
"Would you... Really?"
"Yes," Shang Ruohai confird. "I will never go back on my words."
Feng Jieyun’s breathing was reduced into ragged gasps.
"You promised," he said as he struggled to remain awake. "You promised."
"I did."
More tears stread down Shang Ruohai’s face.
"I promised."
"Okay, CUT!"
"....."
Shang Ruohai froze.
He slowly turned his head toward the curtain behind him. It turned out that it had been hiding a cara team, Feng Jietang, Yan Renzhong, and even Shen Jingwei. The last two had apologetic expression on their faces.
Feng Jietang triumphantly cried out, "You said you promised! I have it on cara! I even have witnesses here! You can no longer deny it!"
Yan Renzhong pulled a pained grimace.
Shen Jingwei mouthed a "I am sorry".
Shang Ruohai slowly turned around to look at the dying man on the bed.
Right now, Feng Jieyun no longer looked like he was knocking at death’s door.
Once the bandages ca off, he looked quite healthy.
His cheeks were even suffused with blood.
"Look, don’t be mad," he slowly said. "I did block the chandelier for you, but uh, it didn’t crush completely. It toppled to the side and I managed to push you to safety in ti. Shang Ruohai..."
Feng Jieyun swallowed hard when he saw fury rising in Shang Ruohai’s eyes like twin phoenixes about to take flight.
"Shang Ruohai, please. I didn’t an to deceive you. It’s just... It was such a golden opportunity and..."
Shang Ruohai exploded then and there.
"FENG JIEYUN!" he roared. "I AM GOING TO KILL YOU!!!’
That day, the entire hospital floor was in great uproar. The entire cara team and three actors worked together to separate the CEOs from two rival entertainnt companies before one took the other’s life for real.
Three months later, Shang Ruohai stood in front of his car at the hospital’s parking lot, blowing smoke out of his cigarette like a chimney top.
He looked so handso but also so intimidating that no one dared to even approach him.
No one knew what he was doing there.
Until eventually a bunch of people erged, pushing Feng Jieyun in a wheelchair toward the car.
"Thanks," Feng Jieyun said to his younger brother. "I am good. You can leave."
Feng Jietang shalessly saluted Shang Ruohai, whose face cracked at his greeting, "Hello, Sister-in-law!"
Feng Jietang quickly escaped before Shang Ruohai threw a leather shoe at his head.
"Don’t be angry," Feng Jieyun said in a honeyed voice. "He’s just a kid."
Shang Ruohai rolled his eyes.
"Kids need to be beaten into shape," he said as he opened the door.
Feng Jieyun pushed himself off the wheelchair and gingerly climbed into the car with Shang Ruohai’s help.
His eyes widened when he caught sight of a huge bouquet of flower between their seats.
"Hm? Whose flower is that?"
Shang Ruohai looked away, but Feng Jieyun still saw the crimson tip of his ears.
"You can have it if you want," he scoffed.
Feng Jieyun happily took the bouquet into his arms.
"Thank you, wife," he sweetly said in reply.
