Upon receiving news from Wen Guilin, Dr. Kang, the most renowned neurologist in the city, specifically reserved two hours at the end of his practice hours to examine Yan Renzhong’s condition.
Due to Yan Renzhong’s celebrity status, it was not convenient for anyone to see him coming in and out of a doctor’s office, so Dr. Kang took care to dismiss his staff in ti before Yan Renzhong even arrived.
Wen Guilin wanted to accompany Yan Renzhong into the building, but Yan Renzhong politely declined.
"This is my private affair," he said. "Sorry, Manager Wen. Will you please wait outside?"
"Oh. Okay."
Wen Guilin, who had planned to wait for Yan Renzhong’s return inside the car, stepped out for a smoke when more than thirty minutes had passed and Yan Renzhong still had yet to make his appearance.
Inside Dr. Kang’s office, the neurologist perford a thorough examination on Yan Renzhong’s condition.
"You haven’t exhibited any symptoms from the ti you ca to visit the first ti," Dr. Kang said as he laid Yan Renzhong’s file between them on the desk. "Have you had any health issues save for the unexpected nosebleed?"
"No," Yan Renzhong said. "But recently I have been plagued by intense headaches."
Dr. Kang’s hands froze.
"How intense?"
"At tis, it feels like soone is drilling holes into my brain."
"... I see. In that case, I suggest you co back tomorrow morning. I shall arrange for so ergency imaging tests and a neurological exam."
"I understand. Thank you, Dr. Kang."
Before Yan Renzhong left, Dr. Kang still had sothing to say.
"Maybe it’s nothing," he told Yan Renzhong. "In most cases, brain tumors are not directly inherited."
"I know," Yan Renzhong pushed himself off the chair. "I am just trying to be careful."
When his father started having problems, it all started with a nosebleed. And then he started having on-and-off headaches that tornted him even during his sleep. As the headaches grew more severe and his cognitive abilities began to wane, his father’s health declined precipitously. By the ti he sought dical help, the brain tumor was found to be at life-threatening stage four.
He did not suffer for much longer after he received the diagnosis.
Less than a year.
Ten months, if Yan Renzhong did not misrember.
At his death bed, Yan Renzhong’s father told him that his father, as in Yan Renzhong’s grandfather also passed away from brain cancer, starting as a malignant brain tumor.
His father was only thirty-five years old when he passed away.
And Yan Renzhong had not even reached thirty years old.
He expected to have so problems in this aspect eventually, but not so early. Especially not now.
"Stress and lacking hours of sleep also contribute to similar health problems," Dr. Kang said. "Didn’t you say that you have been working hard these past few weeks?"
"Yes."
That’s not all. He also had to take care of his private family affairs on the side. The only tis he got to relax was when he got the opportunity to hold Shen Jingwei in his arms and inhale the latter’s familiar scent.
"See you at 7 sharp tomorrow morning," Dr. Kang said. "We will head to the hospital together in my car."
"Thank you, Doctor."
When Yan Renzhong reached ho, he was greeted by the sight of a new puppy Song Yaya had just adopted today.
The dog was very adorable with its pointy ears and three-colored coats. It was additionally very active, always jumping and dashing across the living room without a mont of rest.
"Big Brother! I have a new puppy!" Song Yaya announced the obvious.
Yan Renzhong smiled. He squatted in front of Song Yaya and gave her a pat on the head.
"Have you given it a na?"
"His na is Baobei*!"
"Ah. Cute na."
"You ca back."
Song Xiaoling erged from the kitchen with a jug of warm honey milk.
"Where is Jingwei?" Yan Renzhong asked.
"Taking a shower," Song Xiaoling answered. "Baobei puked on him right after the purchase concluded."
"Oh."
"I will get him!" Song Yaya announced as she bounced toward Yan Renzhong’s bedroom.
Song Xiaoling gestured toward the couch.
"If you are free, I want to talk to you about my plans for the future."
Yan Renzhong couldn’t help but stare in astonishnt.
So quick?
Then again, a wise and reasonable Song Xiaoling was much preferable to her erratic and emotional self.
"My mother has recently gotten divorced from her second husband," Song Xiaoling explained. "She is currently living alone. We talked last week and she asked if I would consider moving in with her."
"... I see."
Yan Renzhong did not know much about Song Xiaoling’s mother. Sohow, he had always assud that Song Xiaoling lost his mother through death and not divorce.
Song Xiaoling scrolled through her phone before finding the photo she was looking for.
"Look, this is my mother."
Shown across the phone screen was an elderly lady with a smile as gentle as Mother Shen’s. She looked like a happy and carefree person.
"I miss her a lot. We haven’t been close to each other since my father divorced her and remarried. I think it will be a good idea for to move in with her."
"I see."
Certainly, it would be better for two ladies to depend on each other for emotional support.
"I agree. When are you planning to go?"
A resigned smile ford on Song Xiaoling’s lips.
"Originally, I planned to go today. But since you and Shen Jingwei foiled my plan, I will need to wait until tomorrow."
"Tomorrow? So early?"
"Yeah. Well, I don’t have anything to hang on to in this city. I have been fired from my workplace after splashing Shen Jingwei with warm water, too, so yeah..."
Her forr manager was a strict person who refused to tolerate her behavior that day, no matter how many tis she apologized. Sotis, a single mistake could ruin everything.
"Yaya is already six years old," Song Xiaoling continued. "It’s ti to choose an elentary school for her."
