Chapter 475: Chapter 460: I’m a Substitute Player, Don’t Feed in the Bot Lane (4th Update)
Laxina was asleep just one second ago, and she really didn’t take seriously what “Milk Add-on at No Extra Charge” said about a Spirit stand-in service.
For every mber of the Holy Creators’ Sanctuary, the Path to Ascension is an extrely sacred ritual; there is no possibility of cheating in this ceremony.
The idea of soone standing in for you on the Path to Ascension was unheard of.
Laxina must have been bewitched by Milk Add-on at No Extra Charge to put all her information on the star map email address provided by him!
Then… just as she had changed into her pajamas and was about to go to bed at night, she was teleported to the Path to Ascension!
The worst part wasn’t so test of her learning or building abilities, but a real combat promotion test!
It felt as if a humanities student had just changed into pajamas and suddenly found themselves in the examination room for a science student’s college entrance exam! The most terrifying part was… if Laxina failed, she would die a terrible death.
Truly, literally, die a terrible death.
“Killer Alley… out of all the Guardians I could have matched with, why did it have to be this godforsaken place?” Laxina said, looking at the grim environnt around her and feeling a sense of collapse.
There has been dedicated research for hundreds of years on the various trial challenges in the Path to Ascension at the Holy Creators’ Sanctuary… Take the Path to Ascension’s combat promotion test, for example.
Hunter/Defender combat promotion faces a total of fifty enemies, so of which are ancient battle mories left over from ancestors, and others are death row inmates confined to the Path to Ascension by the Holy Creators’ Sanctuary.
All of these inmates were infamous murderers on the star map!
Laxina, aspiring to rank up to Hunter with a combat promotion… Of course, she had researched the fifty opponents of this difficulty level. Among the troubleso ones was the Murderer Depp imprisoned in the Path to Ascension.
This guy would torture every entrant to the Path to Ascension, and after encountering this murderer, so test-takers would return to the Holy Creators’ Sanctuary with their bodies reshaped but their spirits completely deranged.
Now, all Laxina had with her was a nightgown— she hadn’t even brought a weapon! In front of Murderer Depp, she was just a piece of cat at, to be sliced bit by bit!
What to do? What to do?
Laxina looked around the shadows of the alley, wondering whether she should escape this dangerous test by committing suicide first.
“Are you the client?”
A voice suddenly rose from the shadows, and at the instant Laxina heard it, every hair on her body stood on end, and her pupils shifted from round to vertical slits.
This voice… it wasn’t Murderer Depp’s?
Laxina had watched the murderer tornt the test-takers; the voice erging from the shadows was clearly not that of the murderer.
“Who are you?” Laxina quickly turned her head, only to find that the figure had already disappeared—it seed that the other party was also wary of her.
“Spirit,” Caral said.
“Spirit… offspring of the Devouring God, you… you’re the ‘stand-in’ that weird woman talked about?”
Laxina searched all around for Caral, but she could only hear his voice.
“A stand-in?”
When Caral heard this grounded description from the cat NPC, his always stern face couldn’t help but burst into laughter in that mont.
The reason was that Caral’s past job was actually in a power-leveling studio. Before being recruited by Coke, he could definitely be called the king of conflict power-leveling; back then, he was the only one in the studio daring to take orders for ranking in the top ten of the national server.
But that was all seven or eight years ago, Caral never thought he would co full circle and pick up his old trade again in Spirit today.
“That’s right, I’m a stand-in,” Caral admitted without denial. After Laxina used such a grounded term, he no longer guarded himself against her and stepped out of the shadows.
A stand-in of the offspring of the Devouring God?
When Laxina heard Caral admit it, a sense of reassurance inexplicably grew inside her. The offspring of the Devouring God were known to be dangerous on the star map, but danger implies great strength.
With the help of an offspring of the Devouring God to pass through the challenge, Laxina felt she shouldn’t die too miserably.
That is, until she saw Caral erge from the shadows.
What the heck?
When Laxina saw Caral’s shadow, she thought he was a burly and sturdy man, and indeed his shape was very robust, but it looked completely like a cylinder!
To be more precise, it was like a soda can that suddenly grew arms and legs!
“You… what are you?” Laxina stared at the walking soda can with arms and legs, on whose red surface were the perfectly written words “Coca-Cola.”
If Laxina had ever drunk Coca-Cola, she would undoubtedly cry out in shock, “Coca-Cola has co to life!”
A walking Coca-Cola was approaching Laxina!
“Spirit stand-in, haven’t I explained it to you already?” Caral said.
Spirit, you must be the essence of Coke, right?
Of course, Laxina would never say such a thing, as a hoarse voice had already arisen from the other side of the street.
“I sll the scent of cat at, it’s been a long ti since I last had so fresh cat at…” This voice was like a mixture of all sorts of detestable noises condensed into one, unbearable to the ears.
Laxina’s head turned back rustily, and there, a hundred ters behind her, stood a male figure dressed in butcher attire, draped with a bunch of… censors.
To Caral, it was just a blur, but to Laxina, it was sothing that could ntally crush her!
Run… Run away!
This thought surfaced in Laxina’s mind, and just as she prepared to flee, Caral grabbed her tail.
“What are you doing!” she yelled at Caral, holding her tail indignantly.
“Stay put,” Caral said.
“Stay put? Do you want to be skinned alive by that guy?”
“I’m a substitute player, listen to ! Stay put, I guarantee a win.”
At this mont, Caral’s professional habits as an experienced substitute player ca back to him, which involved directing newbies during team matches.
This professional quirk of Caral’s substitute playing career had been criticized and cursed at, and it was still a point for his haters to mock him about.
But Caral always did as he pleased.
“How can a substitute player…” Before Laxina could finish, the cola sprite in front of her vanished.
In that instant, Laxina felt she saw nothing but a flash of radiant green light; Caral had already swung the Moonlight Sword in his hand, unleashing a Fierce Dragon Breaking Air Slash in front of Murderer Depp.
But Murderer Depp managed to block Caral’s strike.
“A descendant of the Devouring God?” Murderer Depp’s mouth spread beneath his Executioner’s hood, his pupils focusing intently on the running cola can, “I didn’t expect to et a kin of mine on the Path to Ascension.”
Murderer Depp was also a descendant of the Devouring God? How co Laxina had never received this intelligence in past reports?
“I will tear off your limbs, you strange little…”
Caral didn’t seem to enjoy listening to NPC dialogue; his Moonlight Sword clashed against Murderer Depp’s butcher knife and then, flipping the sword in his hand, he slashed down, severing Murderer Depp’s left arm holding the butcher knife.
As Murderer Depp’s left arm was sliced off, blood gushed from the severed end, and just as Caral prepared to strike down his right arm…
“Be careful, he can regenerate!” Laxina shouted, warning Caral about the troubleso aspect of the Murderer.
That was his ultra-fast regeneration ability. After biting into so sort of food hanging around his neck, the flesh of his left arm twisted and regrew a new arm, imdiately reaching for Caral as he swung at Murderer Depp’s right arm.
But Caral was wielding dual blades… The other sword in his hand, the Shadowless Sword, slashed simultaneously, with the deep yellow gleam of the Shadowless blade and the ethereal green gleam of the Moonlight Sword crossing in front of Murderer Depp, forming an ‘X’ pattern.
When the shadows of the swords faded, both arms of the Murderer were cut off by Caral at the sa ti.
Murderer Depp had two hundred and thirty thousand health points, a Boss that was quite manageable for a solo challenger.
But what made the Murderer tricky was his regeneration ability. However, to the Spirit, this trait was almost non-existent, as his combat skills were crafty and underhanded, capable of employing nearly any trick in the book.
Throughout the fight with Caral, the Murderer had repeatedly inflicted him with poison and blindness.
But… these had no effect on Caral!
The sword cutting through flesh!
The gleaming light of Caral’s drawn blade swings never ceased from the beginning of the battle.
At this mont, Laxina realized why Caral had told her not to move—it wasn’t confusion, but fear of accidentally injuring her.
Sword scars.
The ground beneath Laxina’s feet was covered with grooves from nurous sword slices, and the fight between Caral and Murderer Depp resembled a butcher with surgical precision dismbering a pig.
This one-sided battle lasted less than a minute and culminated in Caral’s Phantom Sword Dance slicing the enemy before him to pieces.
As Murderer Depp’s health reached zero, a drizzle fell from the sky, made up of blood. As the blood droplets were about to fall on Laxina’s head, another gleam of a sword’s curve swept by.
This swing of Caral’s sword parted the scene, leaving Laxina in a completely void space.
“Rember to leave a good review,” Caral said, looking at Laxina who stood still, now stupefied.
Laxina couldn’t co to her senses until the raindrops, composed of blood, landed on her cheeks… And by then, Caral had disappeared.
“Spirit?” Laxina searched around for Caral’s figure, “How do I leave a good review for you? Hey! Spirit?!”
As Laxina called out, she closed and opened her eyes, only to find herself back in the room at the Sanctuary of Creation… Everything felt like a dream.
Only the blood stained on her cheek and the mark of 1/3 victory in the qualifying match on the back of her hand proved everything had been real.
She had to win two more matches to beco a Hunter! Substitute player!
This thought made Laxina rush to the laboratory holding the rcenary known as “Milk at No Extra Charge” in the middle of the night.
“Huh? You want to find a substitute player again?” Milk at No Extra Charge revealed a professional smile upon learning of the catgirl’s request, “This ti, it’ll cost extra!”
