Kain Locke

It has been two days.

Two good days,

That’s how long I’d been back in this damn base, yet it felt no different from the day I arrived.

Half the base had been sent on a mission, including my roommate. That left alone in this room, waiting, thinking. And then there was Kael.

I hadn’t seen a glimpse of him since they took him away. No ssages, no signs, nothing. I told myself it didn’t matter. That I wasn’t thinking about him. But that was a lie, because the fact he hadn’t returned bothered so much.

So much, I hated that it did. Hated the way my mind kept circling back to him, wondering if he was all right, if he’d gotten himself into trouble again. Or he was back on his floor where everyone was forbidden from being on and decided to not co see , he’s an unpredictable person after all.

For this reason and others that might be there and I didn’t want to admit, my feet kept leading toward the stairs. I’d reached halfway two tis just yesterday, but my stomach kept twisting within the two tis, my heart tightening with sothing unexplainable. And then I’d turn back before I could get on top and go back to my room, and pretend I hadn’t almost gone looking for him.

But today, I was done hesitating, because I won’t be coming back until I get on that floor and see for myself whether he’s there or not.

I sat up on the bed, rubbing my face. Enough of this. I was going to climb those damn steps and check his floor. Maybe he was back. Maybe he was fine.

Maybe I just needed to know.

I was pushing myself off the bed when the door swung open without warning.

I pushed myself up from the bed, ready to go when the door swung open without warning.

"What the—" I barely had ti to react before sothing heavy slamd into .

An unfamiliar scent, dark spice, warmth, a teasing edge that made my pulse spike. A body pressed against mine, pinning to the mattress. My instincts kicked in, and I shoved at the weight above but it was no use because the person didn’t budge.

"Get off , who the hec—"

A low chuckle ghosted over my ear interrupting mr. "Missed ?"

It was him!

The bastard was grinning down at , dark eyes glinting with amusent. His body was warm, solid, far too close. I gritted my teeth, twisting beneath him, but he was heavier than I rembered.

I should’ve been pissed. I should’ve been throwing him off. But the fact that he was here, breathing, talking, smirking, and doing all those annoying things that used to make my frustration mix with sothing else entirely wasn’t doing it right now.

He was fine. And for so stupid reason, that made my chest loosen a little but,I wasn’t just about to show that I was glad he ca back despite all the worries that had clawed at my chest at the possibilities those guys might’ve hurt him so I glared up at him. "You’ve got three seconds to get off before I make you regret it."

Kael just smirked, his weight shifting slightly but not moving away. His face was dangerously close, his breath warm against my skin. "What are you gonna do?"

"Get off."

He humd, clearly not taking seriously. My patience snapped. I braced my legs, ready to kick him off, but then the door swung open.

I barely had ti to react before a stunned voice cut through the tension.

"Oh—shit—uh—"

My head snapped toward the entrance to see Sam standing there.

His face turned beet red the mont he saw us. His mouth opened and closed like a dying fish before he awkwardly motioned toward the door, his eyes darting anywhere but the bed.

"You—you have a door," he stamred, waving at the keyhole like he’d just discovered it existed. "I an, you know. You can, um... use it—uh—I should’ve—knocked—I’ll just—go back—"

He took a step backward, ready to retreat.

Oh goodness this is Soo...It’s a misunderstanding, "It’s not what it looks like," I said quickly, shoving against Kael’s chest harder this ti around but he cling to like a second skin, and instead of getting off, he tilted his head, eyes glinting with amusent. "It’s very much what it looks like." He said.

I turned sharply toward him and reprimanded, "Shut up. And..." I practically shoved with all strength in . Kael finally, I an finally rolled off , but not before wincing slightly.

I frowned. Was he hurt? Or just ssing with again?

I didn’t get enough ti to think about it as my guard snapped back up as he stood, smoothing out his clothes with a slow, amused grin.

"And thanks for the advice," Kael said, looking at Sam with a little smile. "We’ll be sure to lock the door next ti."

Sam blinked, finally seeing Kael’s face clearly, and then sothing shifted as his eyes widened, really widened. Like sothing had finally clicked.

His mouth parted slightly. "Wait—" His gaze darted between us, then back to Kael. His body stiffened, and sothing like anxiety crept into his features, I guess he didn’t know it was him before.

And co to think of it, isn’t he supposed to be on a mission with the others?

But before I could say anything, Kael suddenly moved.

One second, I was sitting there, the next—

My entire body got lifted off the bed.

"What the—"

A sharp yelp escaped as Kael effortlessly swept up into his arms.

I struggled instantly, hands gripping his shoulders as a surge of panic shot through . "Put down, you asshole—!"

Kael smirked down at , his grip firm, his posture as relaxed as if I weighed nothing. "We still have unfinished business, rember?"

"The hell we do—" I twisted violently, but his hold only tightened.

Sam took a shaky step back. "Uh—I’ll just—leave you guys to—uh—whatever this is—"

"Sam—"

But Sam was already gone, retreating out the door like his life depended on it.

"You bastard," I growled, struggling in Kael grip. "Put down."

"Not a chance." he said and the next second, he was walking out the door.
