Kain Locke

I blinked awake, my eyes stinging a little as I let out a yawn and pushed myself up on the bed.

Sunlight stread through the open window, telling it was still afternoon.

I must’ve slept the whole morning after leaving Irene in the kitchen. I hadn’t expected to sleep at all, not with how hard it feels forcing myself to. But at so point, exhaustion must’ve won.

I pushed myself up from the sofa, my body still heavy with sleep. My feet found the slippers waiting beside , and I slid them on without thinking. Irene must’ve placed them there. What a thoughtful woman.

A small smile tugged at my lips, but it was lost in a yawn. I covered my mouth, stretching my shoulders as I turned.

By the table, Irene sat with a ball of yarn in her lap, her fingers working rhythmically as she knitted. She didn’t look up at first, only when she must’ve felt my gaze.

"You’re finally up," she said, her voice warm but teasing.

I humd, rubbing the back of my neck, but before I could say anything, my stomach gave a loud, embarrassing growl.

Irene chuckled, setting her knitting aside. "Well, at least I don’t have to ask if you’re hungry."

I huffed out a small laugh, pressing a hand to my stomach. "Guess not."

She pushed herself up, moving toward the kitchen. "I made food. Pancakes, don’t expect it to be all perfect, there’s little ingredients here. You might want to help yourself before it gets cold."

She paused at the doorway, glancing back. "And heat up the herbs on the stove while you’re at it. He needs to drink a cup. Make sure he does."

I sighed but nodded. "Yeah, got it."

"Good." She gave a knowing look. "Don’t forget."

I waved a hand. "I won’t."

But she didn’t move until I actually started toward the kitchen. Only then did she go back to her knitting, shaking her head with a small smile.

I grabbed a plate and stacked a few pancakes onto it, barely bothering to sit down before tearing into them. The first bite was pure relief. I hadn’t realized just how hungry I was until now.

Goodness. I practically inhaled two before forcing myself to slow down.

I ate everything, and just as I chewed the last bite, I turned on the stove, heating up the herbal mixture Irene had left. The sharp scent filled the air as steam curled from the pot. Once it was hot enough, I poured a cup, shaking my head at the murky dark green color. It looked disgusting. It wasn’t even slling nice.

Still, not my problem, now I can imagine his face scrunching up as he swallowed this. This is going to be fun.

Balancing the cup, I made my way to the room he was in.

The mont I stepped inside, my eyes went straight to him on the bed. His breathing was much steady now, and his face was no longer as pale as before. He looked... I swallowed, gripping the cup tighter.

He was still sleeping.

Although I knew he wasn’t the nicest person. Not even close to it, but seeing him like this, unconscious and vulnerable... I sighed, stepping closer to the bed.

"Look at you," I muttered in a low voice, taking in his closed eyes, and whole appearance, "Weak, defenseless... not so smug now, are you?" My lips pressed into a thin line. "But what good is staying like this gonna do?" it’s not like we can go back with him being a sand sack.

Before I could think too much about it, I placed the cup on the nightstand about to go out of the room, however,

That was when he shifted. A small noise left his lips before his eyes fluttered open,

Those dark and sharp eyes, just like they’ve always been locking onto my own. "Didn’t know you cared," he murmured crispy in a hoarse voice, even though I was expecting him to go back to sleep, or just keep silent, ask where we were, or be a less asshole, but only that damn smirk of his was back.

I rolled my eyes. "Irene said you should drink this." I pushed the cup toward him before turning on my heel. "Better take it."

His fingers curled around the blanket instead. "Not drinking that. And who the heck is Irene?"

I stopped in the doorway, scoffing as I turned to face him. "Well, I’m not the one who got himself poisoned, irrationally drove into the water, have us being hunted by so freaks until we got here."

He frowned, shifting slightly, but such a little movent made him wince. "You sound annoyed."

"Shouldn’t I? Do you think I should go look for dancing troupes and singers to welco you from your majestic state of unconsciousness." I huffed, "Now I’m really starting to regret the decision of not leaving your ass in the water to freeze!"

He chuckled with amusent. "Then that would’ve made you the last person I see before I die." His eyes t mine, sothing unreadable flickering in them. "I’ve told you, It’d be worth it if you get to be the last person I saw before I die."

I exhaled sharply, shaking my head. "You’re really sick."

Kael smirked again, leaning back with a groan. "Technically, yes." he nodded, motioning to his bandaged head. "Up here to be precise." He concluded.

I let out a sharp breath, crossing my arms. "Couldn’t have been any accurate. Anyway the old woman went through a lot of trouble making this for you, It’d be a waste if you don’t drink it."

Kael tilted his head, massaging his jaws as he murmured, "You know, you could just ask to drink it, and I will drink it."

I scoffed. "Didn’t you just say we aren’t friends? Funny, coming from soone who insists on that." I taunted intentionally, rembering he’d said those sa words the day he told his father wants dead.

"Of course, we’re not, you didn’t hear say that. Do you?" he said smoothly, leaning back against the pillows like this was his own territory. Then, with that infuriating smirk still on his lips, he added, "Now, co and blow on this. There’s too much steam. If I drink it like this, I might burn my throat and die."

I blinked. "Are you serious?"

He lifted a brow. "You wanna risk it?"

Unbelievable. He’d barely been awake for a minute, and he was already being an insufferable pain in the ass, now I wish he was still unconscious.

I clenched my jaw, matched over to the bed, snatched the cup from the nightstand in a war. So of the liquid almost spilled on in the process, but I caught it just in ti, steadying the cup again.

I let out a frustrated breath and blew on the steaming herbs, watching the ripples form on the surface as irritation simred just beneath my skin as I i forced myself to calm down but I wasn’t having it as he was already saying;

"Can you help get the shirt off? It’s kinda hot in here," he said.

"What? Are you a pervert!?" I reprimanded with an eyeroll, "And why should I help you take it off? I’m not your slave, you see." I smirked.

"But you have no problem taking it off that night. I an that’s so much coming from soone who pressed his body so tight against mine as if to integrate into one."

"What...I didn’t.." Well I did... but it’s only because I thought he was unconscious... oh my goodness, my face burned hot from the embarrassnt, rembering the length I had to go due to the cold...

I was yet to make a better coback when he threw in another grenade, completely blowing away.

"Which makes wonder back in the car," he murmured, his tone quieter this ti. "Right after the car jumped into the water... Why did you go through that lot of trouble to take out when it would’ve been easier to escape on your own?"

My breath caught. My fingers tightened around the cup, yeah, I dragged him out of that car before it sank to the bottom. I got him to the shore, and even helped us feel warm.

But I would never admit to being scared shitless at that ti that all I could think was keeping him alive, therefore, I swallowed. "Why did you also take the hit?" I countered, "the iron, glass or whatever was coming straight at , but you took it." he literally jumped in front of , and it happened so fast I couldn’t see what hit him, however one thing I was certain of is that i should be the one who got that hit at that mont, but he took it, and that wasn’t sothing I could forget, no matter how much I tried.

He let out a slow breath, making my body tense with anticipation of what he’s going to say next, however it all gave way to shock when he answered, "It’s one thing if I die, but you dying... that’s different."

There was a pause, as though my brain took a montary break to process what was just thrown at it.

And when it finally recovered---"Why?" I asked, my grip on the cup loosened slightly as I stared at his face. "What do you an by tha---" before I could complete that statent, Kael reached forward, his fingers brushing against mine as he took the cup from my hands. His touch lingering, just for a second.

Then he smirked, lifting the cup to his lips. "Because you’re my Oga," he said casually.

My stomach tightened. My chest felt strange... off as my inside spasms. Regardless, I forced out a scoff. "I thought that was only for the party." Considering the facts that he said that I’m going to be his oga that night, but that night is gone.

Kael took a slow sip, his gaze never leaving mine. Then, he lowered the cup and eventually settled it on the nightstand,

"And who said the party is over?" he said with a sickening sweet smile.
