Kain Locke

I sat beside the bed, watching his chest rise and fall in shallow breaths. His face was pale for soone as strong as him. The blood loss had done a number on him, but sothing else was off. Even after the wounds had been treated, his body still felt... drained... and now, he’s unconscious.

The door creaked open, the tall male local nurse stepped in, wiping his hands on a rag. "Alright, I’ve done what I can." he said, dropping it on the table.

"And?" I asked, looking him in the eyes. Now you might be wondering how we ended up here after the whole drama from last night.

Well I might have underestimated this place. Not only did they scare off those people last night, but they also called for other residents, who turned out to be surprisingly nice.

Within no ti, Kael was placed on the bed and a nurse was fetched out of them, the male nurse who happens to treat him all night till now he was done.

He let out a small sigh, shaking his head. "Your friend’s been poisoned."

I froze. "Poisoned?"

He nodded. "Yes. Amphinite. A nasty kind, too. Very deadly and dangerous, it’s what you could call a slow poison as it sses with an Alpha’s system, slows them down, weakens them. But in his case..." He looked at Kael with sothing close to amazent. "He’s been fighting it off. I an most people wouldn’t last this long, even dominant Alphas like him."

I swallowed hard, my mind racing. Poison. Soone had poisoned him. I thought sothing was wrong last night by the way he was going conscious and unconscious. I just didn’t think it was going to be poison, But how could he easily get poisoned? Kael wasn’t the kind of guy to just drink sothing without thinking. He wasn’t careless like that. Which ant...

"This wasn’t an accident," I muttered under my breath.

The nurse shot a look. "Probably not. But he’s lucky, given that the only reason he’s still breathing is that his body prioritized stopping the blood loss first. The poison had to take a backseat." He exhaled. "He’ll need rest. A lot of it. His system’s got to flush the poison out on its own now, I gave him so shots to boost it up already."

I nodded, barely hearing him. My mind was sowhere else,

If I was to make a comnt about this, I wouldn’t even know what to say because if he didn’t wake up and narrate everything to , then I’m just like a blind with no staff. However, linking what rang a bell from the nurse report to my own experience, my mind couldn’t help flashing back to that night in Calstone, the switched suppressant, the feeling that sothing was off, how everything happens out of blue. And now this.

Even a fool would know this wasn’t a coincidence. Obviously, soone was onto . And maybe onto him, too.

"Hey." The nurse’s voice pulled back. "You okay?"

I blinked rapidly. "Yeah. Yeah, I’m fine." I answered with a faint smile.

He studied for a mont, then gave a small shrug. "Well, I should get going. Got to check on soone’s dog, poor thing got caught in a trap last night. Probably chased sothing into the woods." He chuckled, shaking his head.

I forced a nod, trying to ground myself back in the mont, knowing the dog most likely had heard us being chased last night and got out only to end up in a trap, "Thanks... for everything." I said for the fact that it was pretty intense last night, even a paid nurse wouldn’t have done so much.

He waved it off. "No problem. Just doing my job." Then, almost as an afterthought, he hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck. "Uh... can I know your na? If you don’t mind?"

Why would he want to know that? I was a little skeptical, but there was no harm in telling him my na right? So I was about to tell him, however, before I could answer, the door swung open again.

"They’re already at the Pine Tree," soone called from outside. "Karen said to call you."

The nurse sighed, shaking his head. "Tell her I’ll be there." He turned back to with an apologetic smile. "Sorry. Gotta go. I’ll check around in the afternoon."

I nodded absently, barely acknowledging him as he slipped out the door.

My eyes were all tired and heavy now...the aftermath of the fact that I didn’t sleep a wink last night, just standing by and helping the nurse with the equipnts.. and, I also took a watch outside, worried those people might co back because I was darn sure they aren’t gone for good.

I leaned back against the chair, staring up at the ceiling as my mind drifted back, to Brian... he must be worried sick for not being in contact. I really hope he was okay.

I exhaled softly as I thought back to the al with Alec. There also Bella, she should be feeling a lot better now, and Alec? I doubt he would even notice that I’m gone, besides I was starting to see he’s the type to mind his own business, except when he’s being a chatterbox.

I chuckled at the thought of him. Co to think of it, if that person hadn’t co to take him away the other day, I wouldn’t have seen that hooded figure going to Kael’s floor, and maybe I wouldn’t have ended up here after all.

What shit? He ntioned it himself that he planned to bring along. Now was this why he brought ? So I can look after his unconscious ass?

I couldn’t help glancing at him again, sleeping so peacefully there, with his aligned and long long lashes sitting perfectly right on his lids, nose as sharp, jaws all the sa, prominent, powerful, and face like that of soone from an oil painting, just the paler version. Well yeah, I hated to admit, he’s so good looking and gorgeous bastard.

Why would I even admit that? He can be handso or ugly for all I care. That’s right, I don’t care, even if he’s the king of the world, I still won’t care.

Just that... his bandaged head must hurt pretty good right?

And... I gulped , staring at the loose strands that fell over his forehead, maybe I should just brush them away slightly. That is definitely nothing... right?

I reached my hand out slowly, gulping every two seconds as I leaned closer to brush it away, however..

"Ahem.. am I interrupting sothing?"

I quickly withdrew my hand and clenched it by my side.

Clearing my throat as I smile awkwardly, "Not at all... you can co in." I replied too fast and Irene stepped inside and shut the door behind her. The nurse had also taken care of her due to how hard she fell against the table last night, she also got injured from it. And it’s thanks to her we’re still here, alive, because she was said to have pushed so sort of ergency button which alerted those guys who flooded in to help us last night.

I blinked at her, still a little caught off guard. The warmth of my own palm still lingered in my side, the thought of what I had almost done made my ears heat up for no damn reason.

I cleared my throat again, forcing myself to focus on her instead, "You’re still injured. You shouldn’t be moving around too much."

Irene scoffed, waving a dismissive hand. "Oh please, child. I’ve had worse." She winced slightly as she took a step forward, but she masked it well. "Besides, if I stayed in bed, who would get anything done around here?"

I frowned. "That doesn’t an you should push yourself. At least let help."

She raised an eyebrow. "You? Help?"

I crossed my arms. "What’s that supposed to an?"

She chuckled, moving toward the small wooden table and setting down the basket she was carrying. "It ans you look more like soone who makes trouble than soone who makes breakfast."

I scowled. "I can cook. Well.. not exactly, I an I could try... I can heat up water for tea... and I can make banana smoothies... I can also.. "

"Uh-huh." Her lips twitched with amusent as she pulled out so herbs from the basket she brought in and began sorting them. "I’ll believe it when I see it."

I exhaled sharply, deciding to drop it. No point in arguing with her, she’d probably still be up and moving even if she had broken half her ribs. I can see that.

My gaze flickered back to Kael, still lying motionless on the bed. The way his breathing remained steady, the slight furrow in his brow now, it was stupid, but for so reason, it made my chest feel tight.

Irene followed my gaze, her expression softening just a little. "He’ll be alright, you know."

I swallowed. "Yeah. I know."

She studied for a mont, then gave a knowing smile. "You care."

I scoffed imdiately. "I don’t."

"Sure, sure." She chuckled, turning back to her work. "Keep telling yourself that."
