Kain Locke

Before I could even react, warm lips pressed against mine.

It was soft yet firm, the heat of his mouth sending a jolt straight to my brain, frying every logical thought I had left. My body stiffened, but my mind, my stupid, traitorous mind went completely blank.

His lips moved slowly, deliberately, in a way that held no urgency, no force, just a lazy, almost teasing press that made my stomach twist. He tasted like whiskey and sothing faintly sweet, like he had just eaten sothing rich.

His breath was warm, his scent intoxicatingly sweet and drawing, and for a second not even a stupid second, but in that very mont, I forgot where I was. The party, the people, everything faded until we were the only ones that existed in this space.

All I could feel was him. And him alone, his hand on my waist, the slight tilt of his head, the way his lips parted just enough to deepen the kiss. And... I opened up, giving him the access he sought.

His tongue slid into my mouth, licking my insides, and I responded, my body pressing instinctively against him.

What the hell is happening?

It’s unexplainable. This slow, dangerous heat curling in my chest, confusing, and at the sa ti, mixing with sothing else. Sothing I refused to na. Sothing so controlling it made weak.

It wasn’t until a wling sound escaped my throat that reality slamd into .

I wasn’t supposed to be kissing him. This was Kael. Kael! The sa man I had spent years trying to forget. My enemy. The son of the very man who ruined and took everything away from .

And although I’d done far more than kissing with him, I was under control then. I wasn’t myself... but now, I’m neither in heat... or...

Panic surged through my veins like fire. And with a sharp gasp, I shoved against his chest, forcing him back.

Kael stumbled a step, his expression unreadable. He didn’t look surprised. If anything, he looked... amused.

I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand, my skin still burning, my mind still spinning from what just happened.

"The hell was that for?" I hissed, my voice shaking, more from shock than anger.

"A distraction," he breathed. "Didn’t I tell you to stay here?" His gaze hardened on .

I blinked. My fists clenched at my sides, but my legs still felt weak. My lips still tingled, traitorously aware of how good it felt. How dare my body react to him like that?

I wanted to say sothing--anything--to shut him up. Instead, I glanced at the space occupied by Caspian earlier, only to see he was already gone.

Kael, on the other hand, took a step closer, leaning down just enough for his breath to brush against my ear.

"You’re blushing."

"I wasn’t!" I denied, even though my cheeks were flaming hot.

I scowled, shoving past him roughly, my pulse still erratic. But the worst part was that I couldn’t walk away. I didn’t want to run into Caspian again. Earlier, I had almost had a heart attack when I saw him until Kael arrived.

I stopped walking, taking a deep breath before looking back at him, "I saw him... he was standing right there..." I cut myself short, feeling ridiculous. Whether I’d truly seen him or it was just my illusion, summoning my demon to taunt , I wasn’t sure.

Except for the fact that... My eyes suddenly went wide with realization.

"You knew he was going to be here," I accused him.

"If you’re talking about my father, yeah, that I knew." He admitted, walking up to again before hooking his arm around my waist, making stiffen and flush red with anger. "But I had no idea you were going to see him first. You always seem to attract trouble. Now enough about that," he breathed, "Didn’t you ask the other ti why we’re here? Particularly why you’re here?"

I nodded in agreent, still muddleheaded.

"There." He pointed, and I glanced behind , seeing nothing special, just people getting on with their business, drinking, and the rest.

"There? There’s basically nothing suspicious here." I muttered, turning to look again, but he caught my chin ,

"Do not look yet, but when I tell you to, you’re going to see wine, bald, and a chain. That’s the reason we’re here. Take note of it. Because he’s not getting out of sight. So play along." He whispered, lowering his head, his hot breath fanning my ear in the process as he kissed my hair.

I gulped inwardly, my throat spasming as I forced my lips to part and brought the words out.

"What if I don’t want to be involved in any of this?" Considering the fact that I’d seen enough weird things today.

"You’re here already. It won’t cost a head to see it through."

And that’s it. Always treating as if I’m a fool and a child. "What’s hard about sharing the details? You’re always talking about riddles. You dragged here and clothed in this. At least if I’m getting into danger, I need to know what’s going on to see it through!" I retorted, trying to push him away.

"I know you don’t trust , but can you at least pretend and follow my lead this one ti? And once we get out of here, I’ll give you an explanation."

"Why not say it her---" The rest of my words died in my throat when two large hands slid all the way under my suit, even under the shirt, over my skin, down each side until they reached my hips, leaving trails of heat in their wake. Then he closed in and kissed my neck, making my toes curl, my insides fluttering like butterflies just erupted within .

"Shh... he’s watching. Play along." His husky voice hushed.

"Wha---" My lips parted on a gasp as he continued to suck on that spot. I groaned when his teeth nipped at the crook of my neck, soothing the bite with his tongue after. It’s a feeling I can’t describe.

However, before I could get lost in that sensation,

Kael pulled back, his lips leaving my skin, and for a mont, I was too caught up in the lingering warmth to register what was happening. Then his voice ca, shaking it all away.

"He’s getting away."

I blinked, still trying to steady myself. "What?" My voice ca out a little hoarse as I shifted uncomfortably on my slightly wobbling legs.

Kael didn’t answer imdiately. Instead, he grabbed my chin, tilting my face toward the crowd.

"Look."

I followed his gaze, scanning the sea of bodies, my mind still fogged from everything that just happened. At first, nothing seed unusual, just the sa people, laughing, drinking.

But then I saw a bald man in a deep wine-colored suit, moving quickly, his head slightly lowered, pushing past the other guests. Unlike the rest of the crowd, I recognized him. Not because I knew him from anywhere, but because of the description Kael had given .

Kael’s hand slid off my waist, leaving behind a strange, empty sensation I didn’t want to na or define.

"We go after him," he murmured, already stepping forward.

I swallowed, still trying to process everything, but there was no ti. I clenched my fists, forcing the heat in my veins to cool.

Then, without another word, I followed. Deciding to trust him just this once. Just this once.

We hurriedly followed through the midst of the people without arousing any suspicion, Kael hand clasped around mine as he dragged after him.

We got out to see a black car reversing out of the parking lot and drove out quickly.

"Get in the car, and put yourself on a seatbelt." He rushed to the driver’s side while I opened the door beside him and sat down, fastening the seatbelt for so unknown reason.

And the mont he stepped on the accelerator, he started chasing after the black car with a maddening speed,

Our tires also screeched against the asphalt as Kael swerved the car, his grip tight on the steering wheel. I could hear my own breathing, sharp, uneven as the speedoter climbed higher and higher.

The black car ahead of us was still in sight, but it was as though the bald man knew we’re unto him as he increased his pace, his car speeding twice faster as he weaved himself between other cars until he was out of sight.

"Damn it. He’s trying to shake us off," Kael muttered, his jaw clenched as he pushed the gas pedal harder.

"Slow down! You’re going to get us killed!" I scread but he didn’t listen, the said car was even nowhere in sight now! This is literally a suicide!

And I knew better when we sped through a higher ground, to see two massive trailers pulled onto the highway, side by side, blocking both lanes. My stomach twisted.

"Kael" was the only word I could gasp as I grasped his arm... "I don’t feel good about this, we have to go back."

"I know," he growled, slamming his foot on the brakes. The tires screeched in protest as the car jerked to a halt.

But before I could even exhale, headlights flashed in the rearview mirror. I turned, heart dropping at the sight of two more trailers. Coming fast from behind us, trapping us in the middle of it!

This is a trap.

"Shit," Kael cursed, his fingers tightening around the wheel. His eyes flicked between the trucks boxing us in

"What are we going to do?" They’re going to crush us! There’s literally nothing we can do, and they’re coming really fast as well.

Before I could finish, he made his decision.

Kael yanked the wheel hard, shifting gears in one smooth motion. The car jolted backward at full speed. I barely had ti to brace before he spun it in a sharp turn straight toward the guardrail.

"Kael!" I shouted, panic clawing up my throat as the railing ca closer.

"Hold on tight," he ordered.

I barely had ti to suck in a breath before the car smashed through the tal barrier.

For a split second, there was silence. A horrifying, weightless silence.

Then we were falling.

The ocean rushed up to et us, dark and my stomach flipped. My scream got caught in my throat as I stared in horror, my heart pumping faster at the thought of how this car is going to land!

However, before the impact, Kael moved from the driver seat and jumping on ,

His arms ca around , pulling close. The world tilted violently as the car hit the water with a force that rattled my bones. A deafening crash exploded around us as the windshield cracked, allowing cold water to rush in.

I gasped, choking as icy waves filled the car, swallowing everything.
