Kain Locke

Pain pulsed through my body, sharp and relentless. I lay on the ground, struggling to catch my breath, even the slightest movent sending fresh agony through . The fall from the snake beast had left battered in a way, my limbs were aching badly, my ribs screaming in protest. And yet, I was alive because of him.

I rolled my eyes to where he stood over again, the mask was still in place just like from the other day, he wasn’t saying anything, just watching like a frozen statue.

"Are you leaving like you did the last ti?" My voice ca out rough, barely more than a whisper. Even though my head pounded as I speak, but, I need answers. It wasn’t as if I could get him to talk by staying silent.

He didn’t respond, I wasn’t expecting him to at least. It was exactly the reason I wasn’t giving up.

I swallowed hard, forcing myself to keep talking. "Are you part of the base? Were you also sent here on this mission like us?"

Nothing. Just those unreadable eyes watching , coldly and detached.

There was no mistaking he was an Alpha, his tall, broad-shouldered fra made that clear, even beneath his long coat. But sothing about him felt different. I just can’t seem to place my hands on it.

He shook his head for a second and started walking closer to where I laid.

Wait... why is he coming closer?

Then, without a word, he crouched beside before I could react, setting his dark crystal gun on the floor.

I tensed as his gloved hand reached for . And the very mont his fingers touched my arm, even through the fabric of my torn sleeve, a strange heat blood under my skin. It wasn’t painful, but it sent an uncomfortable shiver through , generating a heat on my skin. His grip was firm, steady, not gentle, but not cruel either as it rested on my lower abdon.

"What are you—"

Before I could finish, his hand had already traveled upward and pain exploded through my arm as he twisted it back into place with a sharp, practiced motion.

A strangled cry tore from my throat. White-hot agony flashed behind my eyes.

Damn it! Why does he have to do that? I clenched my teeth,

"Breathe," he muttered in a very rough voice and I fought my mories to rember where I heard a voice similar to that one.

But, I barely had ti to recover before he moved to my leg. His touch lingered for a second too long, his fingers tracing the injury like he was morizing it. Even through the glove, I could feel the heat of his skin.

My stomach tightened, a different kind of discomfort creeping in.

Then, with another sharp pull, he reset the dislocated joint. I clenched my jaw, forcing myself not to scream, my nails scratching the tiled floor surface.

By the ti it was over, my body was slick with sweat, my breaths coming out in ragged breaths.

But there was no denying the worst of the pain had sohow faded into a dull, lingering throb. But my skin still burned where he had touched .

I forced myself to look at him. "Why are you helping ?"

He said nothing, only picked his gun, stood up, and started walking away, and just like that day, he was gone.

"Kain.. are you okay?"

I shut my eyes for a brief mont, before opening it to the brightness, and Bella’s face. She was no longer wearing the lab coat, her hand was outstretched and I took it weakly, allowing her to pull up.

"Thank God you’re safe, I thought it got you." She breathed examining my body, but I held her hand,

"You’re wounded." I said looking at the large wound on her forehead, it wasn’t just a wound, but it looked like scratches, and the skin around it was turning purple and green.

"You got poisoned." I muttered,

She pretended as though she didn’t hear say it and said instead, "Soone is here...do you see them?"

"Ahhh... yes, they left already." I said, "We must get this treated, do you know if there’s..." i stopped myself before I could finish, rembering I knew little to nothing about dicine so even if there is laboratory here there we can find various of chemicals to treat her injuries before it did a greater harm to her, there’s no way I can do it, so the only thing to do now is that, "Co on, we have to get you to the base."

"No we can’t possibly go out there... who knows? They might still be out there... it’s just a scratch from a snake’s teeth before it was killed, so it can’t kill yet."

"What are you saying right now? Are you serious? Can’t kill you when you’re looking like this already." she’s already turning pale and her lips are turning a little blue... this really serious.. I can’t lose her...

"Co on, we gotta go." I took her hand.

She shook her head, trying to release my hold on her, "I said I’m fine!" She insisted.

"Staying here won’t tell us if they’re dead or not! Even if we stayed here... what assurance do we have that they won’t co crawling here in no ti, so co on, even if we’re going to et our end in the hand of a beast, shouldn’t we at least try to survive?"

After so convincing, Bella finally gave in. "Fine." She mumbled.

My arm was steadying her as we stepped out through the door where we got separated earlier.

And that’s when I saw them.

Dead snake beasts, their massive bodies sprawled across the ground, their blood darkening the floor. There were so many of them even though it was dim.

I swallowed hard.

Did he do all this...by himself?

The sheer number of corpses made my skin prickle. Whoever that masked man was, he wasn’t just strong he was terrifying even more than I could ever have thought.

But I didn’t have ti to think about that now. Bella’s breathing was getting shallower, and her skin looked even worse.

So I tightened my grip on her arm, guiding her toward the door so we could get to the car, even as we went we could see dead snakebeast everywhere.

And finally, we arrived at the car.

But when I reached for the door nothing. It was locked, and if I rember correctly the beta has it and he was swallowed right in my face by a beast so..

"Damn it!" I cursed, raking a hand through my hair.

Bella stirred beside and, with trembling fingers, reached into her pocket. She pulled out a small keycard and pressed it into my palm. "Try this. It should open it."

I didn’t ask where she got it. I just swiped the card, and fortunately, the lock clicked open.

Relief flooded through imdiately, "Good thinking."

She gave a weak smile before slumping against the seat. I helped her get comfortable on the seat, slamd the door shut before going to the driver’s seat, opened the door, entered, set the car to autopilot, and it took off, speeding back to the base.

It took twice the hour we took to arrive here. The Beta who drove the car earlier was one mad of a driver, but now even though it was moving fast, but not as fast as him.

The mont we arrived at the base, I looked back and saw Bella was already unconscious. I jumped out of the car and ran into the base like a mad man, shouting for the dics.

"I’ve got a poisoned mber in the car! She needs help now!"

Thankfully, a group of dical officers rushed toward us with a stretcher. They got Bella onto it the mont they got to the car, checking her vitals as they hurried down the hall.

I followed them into the room she got taken into my heart pounding. "She’s going to be okay, right?"

One of the dics turned to . "We’ll do everything we can. But you need to step back."

"I just..."

"Out, you can’t co in here." another snapped, as they pushed her inside and closed the door.

I clenched my fists but didn’t argue with them. She’s going to find it, I assured myself.

Even though my head was pounding, my body was sore and my mind was still reeling from everything that had happened.

With no other choice, I turned and walked back to my room with exhaustion that was now settling on that the adrenaline had worn off.

I got there in no ti and shut the door behind , pressing my back against it with my eyes shut as I exhaled slowly, thinking back at everything.

"For how long do you intend to stay at the door?"

My heart skipped more than a beat as my body ran cold.

Am I in the wrong room?

I opened my eyes and looked around, but it is the sa place I woke up, it’s really the room the guide said was mine. But why is he sitting on my bed?

"I told you to et by 10pm, why didn’t you co?" he demanded.
