The week of information sharing proved more valuable than Luthra had expected.
Finn’s network delivered daily updates on Syndicate troop movents, accurate down to specific hunter nas and equipnt loadouts, Gareth sent tactical assessnts of defensive positions, and Thalia coordinated supply
chains between all four settlents.
In exchange, Luthra provided combat intelligence from his encounters with Syn dicate forces and allowed Gareth to send three of his best tacticians to help optimize their defensive layout.
On the seventh day, they reconvened via Association-provided communication crystals, the four leaders appearing as magical projections around the sa circular table they’d t at in person.
Gareth spoke first. "The intelligence has been solid, Finn’s network spotted a Syndicate raiding party heading for my compound two days ahead of schedule, we set an ambush and eliminated them without losses, that’s actionable intelligence,I’m convinced this alliance has value."
Thalia nodded. "The support workers I sent to each location have reported back, you’ve all treated them fairly and compensated their work, that builds trust, I’m ready to formalize coordination."
Finn looked pleased. "My informants report that the Syndicate is confused by our sudden coordination, they’ve pushed back their assault tiline by one week while they reassess, that buys us ti."
Everyone looked at Luthra.
"The tactical support from Gareth’s people improved our defenses significantly, Thalia’s workers helped build infrastructure we couldn’t have managed alone, and Finn’s intelligence prevented two separate reconnaissance attempts, I’m satisfied this alliance is functional, let’s formalize terms."
They spent the next two hours hamring out details.
The agreent was straightforward: each settlent maintained independence but committed to mutual defense, if one location was attacked the others would send reinforcents within twelve hours, intelligence was shared imdiately, and resources were traded at fair rates.
Vera, monitoring the discussion, provided Association endorsent. "This is exactly what we hoped to see, independent settlents organizing defensive pacts creates stability without requiring Association intervention, you’ll have our continued support."
After the eting concluded, Khorvash looked at the signed docunts. "So now we’re part of a coalition, that’s new, think it’ll actually work when fighting starts?"
"Depends on whether people follow through when it matters, it’s easy to promise help when there’s no imdiate danger, harder to actually send your fighters into a battle that’s not directly threatening you."
Misha was already integrating the new information into their defensive plans. "Finn’s latest intelligence suggests the Syndicate will hit us first, they see your settlent as the biggest threat because you’ve defeated multiple B-Rank hunters, if they eliminate you the others will be demoralized."
"Which ans we need to not just survive the first assault but decisively win it, show the Syndicate that attacking independent settlents is costly."
"That’s a tall order against three hundred soldiers and multiple A-Rank hunters."
"Then we make the terrain do most of the work, we know this settlent better than they do, we use that advantage."
Over the next week, preparations intensified.
Borris expanded the defensive walls and created hidden firing positions, Jako set up more elaborate trap systems, and Khorvash drilled the rapid response teams until they could deploy to any threatened section within ninety seconds.
Luthra spent his ti training Rebecca and testing the limits of his Level -10 abilities.
The Absorption Mimicry proved versatile, he could copy not just raw strength but specific techniques like Khorvash’s fla manipulation or Misha’s sovereign space barriers, the duration was still limited but each new stolen technique taught him sothing about how other hunters used mana.
’If I can steal an enemy’s enhancent mid-fight and use it against them, that creates psychological pressure on top of tactical advantage, they have to worry about their own techniques being weaponized.’
[Correct, and as you face more diverse opponents you’ll build a library of stolen techniques you can reference, by Level -25 you should be able to recreate previously absorbed techniques without needing to steal them again.]
Rebecca’s progress was also notable, her fire control had improved to the point where she could create sustained flas without emotional instability, and her physical conditioning now allowed her to keep up with low-level hunters in endurance.
"Can I fight when the Syndicate cos?" she asked during one training session.
"You can fight in a support role, ranged fire attacks from defensive positions, but you’re not going into direct lee, you’re not ready for that yet."
"When will I be ready?"
"When you can go five minutes against without getting disard, right now your best is thirty seconds."
She grimaced but accepted the assessnt.
On the fourteenth day after the coalition formation, Finn’s intelligence network sent an urgent ssage.
Syndicate forces were mobilizing, three hundred soldiers, fifteen B-Rank hunters, and two confird A-Rank commanders, estimated arrival at Luthra’s settlent in forty-eight hours.
The war council activated imdiately.
Gareth pledged twenty of his best fighters to reinforce Luthra’s position, Thalia sent a hundred support workers to help with logistics and evacuation if needed, Finn provided detailed intelligence on the enemy commanders’ combat styles and preferred tactics.
The Association, true to their word, staged dical teams just outside the conflict zone and confird they would intervene if the settlent was in danger of total annihilation.
Luthra stood on the walls of his settlent, watching the northern horizon where the Syndicate army would appear.
Around him, six hundred defenders prepared for battle, dug into fortified positions, ard with whatever weapons they could scrounge, trained as well as ti had allowed.
Khorvash stood beside him, her dragon nature barely contained. "This is it, the big one, you ready?"
"As ready as I’m going to be, we’ve done everything we can to prepare, now we find out if it was enough."
Misha joined them, her staff glowing with stored mana. "The evacuation routes are clear, civilians are staged for ergency withdrawal, dical teams are prepositioned, we’re as organized as we’re going to get."
Rebecca appeared, wearing light armor and carrying a compact crossfire launcher. "I’m not hiding, wherever you put I’ll fight."
Luthra looked at her, saw the determination and fear mixed together. "Alright, you’re on the east wall with the ranged attackers, follow Jako’s orders and don’t do anything heroic."
"I’ll do my job."
The sun set on the second day, casting long shadows across the wasteland.
And then, on the horizon, movent.
The Syndicate army appeared like a dark tide, hundreds of soldiers in formation, siege equipnt being pulled by mana-beasts, and at the front, two figures radiating enough power to make the air distort.
A-Rank hunters.
Lilith’s analysis appeared.
[Scanning enemy forces, primary commander identified: Vex "the Destroyer", A-3 rank, Path of Absolute Annihilation, secondary commander: Kira "the Phantom", A-4 rank, Path of Perfect Assassination, threat assessnt: extre, recomnded strategy: avoid direct confrontation with commanders until their forces are depleted.]
’So the plan is survive their initial assault, whittle down their numbers, and only engage the A-Ranks when we have overwhelming advantage.’
[Correct, A-Rank hunters can single-handedly devastate fortified positions, facing two simultaneously would be suicidal without significant force multiplication.]
The Syndicate army stopped about a mile from the settlent, setting up a forward camp, they weren’t in a rush, they had numbers and power, they could afford to be thodical.
A single figure detached from their formation and approached under a white flag, it was a B-Rank Luthra didn’t recognize, probably a ssenger.
Luthra t him at the gate.
"ssage from Commander Vex," the hunter said, his voice carefully neutral, "surrender unconditionally and your people will be allowed to disperse unhard, resist and the settlent will be razed with everyone inside, you have until dawn to decide."
"Tell Vex that if he wants this place he’s welco to try taking it, but he should bring more than three hundred soldiers, he’s going to need them."
The ssenger’s eyes widened slightly. "You’re serious, you’re actually going to fight two A-Rank hunters and an army with your mining settlent."
"I’ve fought worse odds, tell your commander we’ll see him at dawn."
The ssenger shook his head like Luthra was insane, then returned to the Syndicate camp.
Khorvash laughed. "You just challenged an A-Rank hunter to his face, that was either incredibly brave or incredibly stupid."
"Little bit of both, but now they know we’re not backing down, that ans they’ll commit to a frontal assault instead of trying siege tactics, we can bleed them on the walls."
That night, the settlent was quiet, people checked weapons, reviewed defensive positions, and tried to get what sleep they could.
Luthra didn’t sleep, he stood on the walls and watched the Syndicate camp, their fires glowing in the darkness like a small city.
’Tomorrow everything changes, we win here and the other independent settlents will believe resistance is possible, we lose and the Syndicate reasserts control over the entire region.’
Lilith’s presence was comforting.
[You’ve prepared well, Luthra, regardless of outco, you’ve built sothing aningful and given six hundred people hope they didn’t have before, that matters.]
’Thanks, Lilith, let’s make sure we survive to build more.’
Dawn ca with blood-red light.
The Syndicate army ford ranks and began their advance.
