With a final, desperate burst of speed, the Odyssey shot out of the end of the collapsing, chaotic tunnel. The violent, swirling madness of the corridor vanished, and they were suddenly floating in a place of profound and absolute calm.

The ship’s ergency lights shut off, and the normal, soft, white lighting of the bridge returned. The screaming alarms fell silent. The crew, who had been holding on for dear life, slowly picked themselves up, their faces a mixture of relief, exhaustion, and pure, wide-eyed awe.

They had made it. They had arrived at the impossible coordinates. They had reached the Axis of Ti.

It was not a place in the way a planet or a star is a place. There was no ground, no sky. They were floating in a gentle, dark void, but instead of stars, the void was filled with shimring, colorful threads of light. There were millions of them, stretching from infinity to infinity, crossing and weaving around each other in a vast, cosmic tapestry.

"What... are we looking at?" Kaelia whispered, her voice full of wonder.

"Tilines," Emma said, her own voice hushed. As a precog, she had only ever seen a few of these threads at a ti, the branching paths of the future.

But here... here she was seeing all of them. Every possible choice, every potential future, every "what if" in the history of the universe, was laid out before them as a single, beautiful, and overwhelming picture.

And then, they saw it.

In the center of the web of tilines, a new figure began to take shape. It wasn’t a solid person. It looked like it was made from the threads of light themselves, a shifting, shimring being of woven light and shadow.

One mont it looked like a tall, elegant man, the next a graceful, robed woman, and the next a formless being of pure, radiant energy. This was the Chrono-Weaver, the Tiless One.

It did not speak with a voice. It spoke with visions and feelings, its thoughts flowing directly into their minds. Its first thought was a feeling of amused curiosity, like a very old, very wise being watching a group of interesting children who had wandered into its garden.

You have made quite a lot of noise to get here, the Chrono-Weaver’s thoughts echoed in their minds. You have bent the rules. You have broken the board. I am intrigued.

It then began to speak in riddles, showing them glimpses of the futures they were fighting for, and against. It showed them a vision of a tiline where they succeeded in restoring Ryan, only to see him beco a cold, lonely god, just as the First Herald had predicted.

Then, it showed them a tiline where they failed, and the galaxy fell into the gray, silent peace of the Cult of Final Stillness. It showed them a thousand different victories and a million different defeats.

Every choice creates a new thread, the Weaver’s thoughts explained. Every action has a price. Are you prepared to pay it?

Then, the being of light and shadow turned its shifting, formless attention to one person on the bridge: Seraphina.

Suddenly, Seraphina’s world was no longer the bridge of the Odyssey. She was standing in the middle of the web of ti itself, with the Chrono-Weaver before her. As a being of life, as a person who cherished the vibrant, beautiful now, this was a deeply unsettling experience.

You love life, the Weaver’s thoughts said to her, not unkindly. You celebrate the present mont. But have you ever truly considered the consequences of your choices?

The Weaver showed her a thread. It was a tiline where, years ago, she had chosen to save a single, endangered plant on a dying world. In that vision, she saw the plant thrive and spread, becoming a beautiful forest.

But then, the vision fast-forwarded a thousand years. The beautiful forest had beco an invasive species, choking out all other life on the planet, turning a world of diverse beauty into a world of a single, monotonous green. Her small act of love had, in the long run, caused an ecological disaster.

The Weaver then showed her another thread. It was a tiline where she had failed to convince a warring planet to make peace. She watched in horror as the planet was consud by a terrible, bloody war.

But then, the vision fast-forwarded again. The survivors of that war, united by their shared tragedy, had gone on to build a new, peaceful society, a culture so full of wisdom and compassion that it beca a beacon of hope for the entire sector. Her failure had, in the end, led to a greater good.

The experience was agonizing. She was forced to see that good intentions could lead to terrible outcos, and that tragedy could sotis be the seed of sothing beautiful. It broke her simple, joyful view of the universe. But it did not break her.

It transford her.

When the visions faded and she was back on the bridge, her friends looking at her with concern, there were tears in her eyes, but also a new, deeper understanding. She erged from the trial not with a broken heart, but with a stronger soul.

Her love for Ryan, which had been a beautiful, personal desire to save the man she cared for, was now elevated into sothing more. It beca a universal principle. She now understood that the fight for him was also a fight for a universe where people had the right to make their own choices, to live with their own consequences, to be ssy and imperfect and wonderfully, beautifully alive.

You have passed my test, the Chrono-Weaver’s thoughts finally said, a feeling of approval now in its ntal voice. You understand the weight of a choice. And so, I will offer you one.

The being of light and shadow extended a shimring, insubstantial hand.

I can show you the true path to restoring your fallen hero, it offered. A thod that does not require the Primary Weaver. A way to do it yourselves, using a power you already possess. It is a dangerous path, a secret path, but it is a path to victory.

The crew exchanged looks of cautious hope. This was it. This was the answer they had risked everything for.

But, the Weaver continued, and they all felt the weight of the coming price, everything has a cost. I exist outside of the Regent’s laws, but not outside the laws of balance. If I give you sothing, you must give sothing in return.

"What do you want?" Ryan’s voice asked, speaking through the ship’s comm system, his own consciousness connected from his shielded room.

There is an object, the Weaver explained. A piece of a story that I wish to read. The ’Heart of Valerius.’ It was his personal data core, containing all of his mories, his philosophies, his final, secret thoughts. It was ejected from his citadel monts before its destruction, a final ’ssage in a bottle’ from a dying tyrant. It is now lost.

A new set of coordinates appeared on their viewscreen. It pointed to a dark, chaotic nebula, a place known to smugglers and scavengers as the Graveyard of Giants.

The data core is lost in a graveyard of ancient starships, the wreckage of a long-dead war, the Weaver concluded. Bring it to . Bring the final Chapter of his story, and I will give you the first Chapter of yours. That is my bargain.

The offer was clear. To find the secret to bringing Ryan back to life, they first had to go on a dangerous treasure hunt into a haunted nebula, to find the lost heart of their greatest enemy.
