Hiroshi’s eyes snapped open.

He didn’t know how long he’d been lying there. Minutes? Hours? The pain had faded to a dull throb, which probably ant he was going into shock.

Not good.

He turned his head slightly, ignoring the spike of agony from his ribs, and looked at the dungeon core. It still pulsed with that steady rhythm, casting purple light across the room.

He was still alive.

Hiroshi rolled onto his side, biting back a scream as his broken ribs ground together. His left arm was useless, the acid burns having stiffened into rigid, blistered flesh. His right shoulder throbbed from the rat bite. Blood had soaked through all his bandages and most of his clothing.

But he could still move. Barely.

He began crawling toward the dungeon core.

Each movent sent fresh waves of pain through his body. His vision kept blurring, and twice he had to stop and wait for the darkness at the edges to recede. But he kept going, pulling himself forward across the blood-slicked stone.

The giant rat’s corpse lay between him and the core. He had to crawl around it, through puddles of cooling blood, past scattered bones and debris.

Three feet. Two feet. One foot.

His hand reached the crystal and closed around it.

The core was warm to the touch, pulsing with energy he could feel even through his injuries. This was the dungeon’s heart. Destroying it would collapse the entire structure and complete the mission.

But sothing made him hesitate.

Hiroshi stared at the crystal, mind working through a half-ford thought. The dungeon had been misclassified. G-rank dungeons didn’t have boss monsters. They didn’t spawn creatures this powerful. The assessnt had been wrong, or the dungeon had evolved faster than expected.

Either way, he’d just killed sothing far above his level.

And his system rewarded growth through combat.

Hiroshi pulled his rusted knife from his pocket with his good hand. The blade was still slick with the rat’s blood. He raised it above the crystal, preparing to bring it down and shatter the core.

Then he paused again.

If he destroyed the core now, the dungeon would collapse. He’d complete the mission. Maybe survive long enough to crawl back to the surface and find a healer.

But he wouldn’t get credit for the kill. The system wouldn’t register it properly. Not until the dungeon was cleared and the space stabilized.

He needed to wait.

Hiroshi lowered the knife and leaned back against the wall, still clutching the core. His body scread at him to move, to get out, to find help. But his mind insisted he wait just a little longer.

For what felt like an eternity, nothing happened.

Then heat flashed through his body, different from the pain, different from the enhancent burning. This was familiar. The sa sensation he’d felt during training when his skills had ford.

Text appeared in his mind, sharp and clear despite his fading consciousness.

[ Enemy Defeated: Dungeon Rat Matriarch - Level 20 ( dormant )]

[ Experience Gained: 847 XP ]

[ Level Up! Level 9 → Level 10 ]

The sensation intensified. Energy poured into him, not healing his wounds but filling so internal reservoir he hadn’t known existed. His status screen flickered into view unbidden.

Hiroshi’s vision blurred as more text appeared.

[New Skill Acquired: Undead Stride → Pain Suppression - Level 1]

Passive ability to reduce perceived pain and maintain function while injured. Does not heal wounds but allows continued combat effectiveness.

The mont the skill integrated, the world shifted. The pain didn’t disappear, he could still feel his broken ribs, his burned arm, his bleeding shoulder, but it moved back sohow. Beca distant.

He could think clearly again. Move without the agony overwhelming him.

Hiroshi took a shaky breath and forced himself to stand.

His body protested every movent, but the Pain Suppression skill let him push through it. He looked down at himself, covered in blood, clothes torn and burned, multiple wounds bleeding freely. He looked like soone who should be dead.

But he was standing.

He raised the knife and brought it down on the dungeon core.

The crystal shattered with a sound like breaking glass. Cracks spread across its surface, then the entire thing exploded into fragnts that dissolved into purple light.

The dungeon shuddered.

Hiroshi felt the space begin to collapse around him. The walls started dissolving, reality reasserting itself as the temporary pocket dinsion unraveled. He had maybe thirty seconds before the entire structure ceased to exist.

He stumbled toward where the entrance had been, following his mory of the path. The corridor was already fading, walls becoming translucent. He could see the real world beyond them, afternoon sunlight, the old mill’s rubble, the real basent that existed before the dungeon had manifested.

His legs threatened to give out but he forced them to keep moving. The Pain Suppression skill was doing its job, keeping him functional, but it couldn’t fix his injuries. He was still losing blood. Still had broken ribs and burns and deep lacerations.

The entrance appeared ahead, that doorway of purple light flickering and fading. Hiroshi threw himself toward it.

He fell through the doorway just as the dungeon collapsed completely behind him.

Hiroshi hit solid ground–real ground, not dungeon stone–and rolled, gasping. Sunlight burned his eyes after the dim fungal glow. Fresh air filled his lungs. The sll of grass and earth replaced the stench of mold and decay.

He’d made it out.

He lay there for a long mont, staring up at the sky, too exhausted to move. His body was a map of pain despite the suppression skill. He needed a healer. Imdiately. Before blood loss or infection or his punctured lung killed him.

"Holy shit."

Hiroshi turned his head slowly to see the old man who’d been sitting outside when he arrived. The man was on his feet now, staring at Hiroshi with wide eyes.

"You’re alive," the old man said, like he couldn’t believe it. "I thought for sure you were dead."

"Not yet," Hiroshi managed.

"You look like hell, kid. Like sothing tried to eat you and gave up halfway through." The old man moved closer, his expression shifting from shock to concern. "Can you walk?"

"Maybe. Don’t know."

"The hell did you fight down there? G-rank dungeons don’t do this to people."

Hiroshi pulled himself into a sitting position, the Pain Suppression skill allowing the movent even though his body scread against it. "It wasn’t G-rank. Not anymore. There was a boss monster."

The old man went pale. " That’s–that’s F-rank territory."

"I know."

"How did you..." The man stopped, looking at Hiroshi more carefully. "You killed it?"

"Yes."

"Alone?"

"Yes."

The old man was quiet for a mont, processing that. Then he shook his head. "You’re either the luckiest bastard I’ve ever t or the stupidest. Maybe both." He offered his hand. "Co on. Let’s get you back to the city before you bleed out on my property. I really don’t want that hassle."

Hiroshi took the offered hand with his good arm and let the old man help him to his feet. Standing made his vision swim, and he had to lean heavily on the man’s shoulder to keep from falling.

"There’s a healing house three blocks from the Church," the old man said. "Can you make it that far?"

"I will try my best."

They started walking slowly, Hiroshi’s legs threatening to give out with every step. The old man supported most of his weight, muttering under his breath.

As they walked, Hiroshi pulled up his status one more ti, wanting to confirm what had happened.

Na: Hiroshi

Level: 10

Skills:

- Dodge (Level 2)

- Fighter Instinct (Level 2)

- Sword Mastery (Level 1)

- Pain Suppression (Level 1)

Four skills now. And level ten finally reached.

He’d survived a dungeon that should have killed him. Defeated an enemy twice his level. Gained abilities that would keep him alive in future fights.

The cost had been severe, his body was wrecked, he’d barely escaped with his life, and he’d need days of healing before he could even think about training again.

But he’d done it.

Proven to himself that growth was possible. That he could face enemies stronger than him and win through skill and determination and refusing to give up even when defeat seed certain.

"What’s your na, kid?" the old man asked as they limped down the road toward the city.

"Hiroshi."

"Well, Hiroshi, you’ve got balls. Stupid, reckless balls, but balls nonetheless." The man adjusted his grip as Hiroshi stumbled. "Most people would’ve run the mont they saw that boss monster. You stayed and fought it alone."

"Didn’t have a choice."

"Everyone has a choice. You chose to fight. That’s sothing."

Hiroshi didn’t respond. He focused on putting one foot in front of the other, on staying conscious, on making it to the healing house before his body finally gave up.

The city walls appeared in the distance, and with them the promise of treatnt.

He’d completed his first solo mission. Nearly died doing it. But he’d completed it.

And tomorrow, after he healed, he’d do it again.

Because this was just the beginning.
