The second Lucen stepped through the rift, the world changed.

Not violently. Not with a flash or scream or system buzz.

Just shifted.

Like slipping between thoughts.

His boots crunched down into packed snow.

Not deep, half a step, maybe two inches, but enough that the sound echoed.

The air hit next. Sharp. Clean. Cold in the throat kind of cold.

Lucen blinked.

His system responded instantly.

[ZONE: Tier 5 – Unmarked Drift]

[Status: Active / Core Unstable]

[Environnt Hazard: Low / Cold Exposure Accumulation – Begin Tracking]

[System Note: Recomnded Exit Within 3 Hours]

’Cute,’ Lucen thought. ’It thinks I listen to warnings.’

He looked up.

Trees.

Tall ones.

Old.

Thick pines layered in snow like soone had painted over the world with frost and forgot to stop. No visible monsters. No movent. No sounds except his own breath and the faint, constant drift of wind curling between the trunks.

His system pinged again.

[Terrain Sync: Complete]

[Local Conditions: Visibility – Moderate | Mobility – Stable]

[Mana Field Density: High]

Lucen smirked faintly.

’High mana. That’s either great or a trap.’

He reached up, flicked open the spell archive with a thought.

No changes. All spells loaded.

Mana bar? Still full.

’Let’s keep it that way.’

He stepped forward. Snow didn’t crunch quite the sa this ti. The ground underneath wasn’t soft. Hardpack. Frosted rock. Roots.

Forest like this wasn’t natural. Not at this temperature. Not with mana this thick.

Drifts usually followed logic. This one didn’t care.

A small glyph flared on the edge of his vision.

Not his.

He turned.

Nothing there.

Just trees.

Quiet.

He tapped the system interface again, whispered, "Scan local field."

[Pulse Sent.]

A wave rippled outward. Subtle. Not flashy. Just enough to disturb the air.

Sothing flickered on the edge of his view, northwest, maybe twenty ters.

Then disappeared.

[Life Sign Detected – Inactive]

[Classification: Unknown / Dormant State]

Lucen rolled his shoulders. Glanced up again.

’I swear if this is a snow mimic I’m lighting the whole forest.’

He didn’t draw a spell.

Not yet.

He kept walking.

The trees got thicker.

Snow fell in slow, lazy spirals. Not real snow, drift logic. No clouds. Just atmosphere leaking frost.

Lucen muttered under his breath, "Not creepy at all."

Then a crunch sounded behind him.

Fast. Sharp.

Like sothing dropped from a branch and landed too clean.

Lucen didn’t spin.

He moved sideways, fast, low, short step, and snapped his fingers.

[Threadmask]

The forest shimred around him.

Image split.

He moved into the false echo, watched the spot where he stood a mont ago.

Sothing dropped there.

Tall.

Thin.

Humanoid.

Armor made of bone lattice and frost-stuck leather. No face. Just a blank helm, carved with a single downward triangle.

It tilted its head.

Lucen whispered, "Well, that’s new."

The first figure still hadn’t moved.

Lucen watched it, eyes locked, breath steady, no spell cast yet.

Then another one dropped from a branch to the right.

Sa armor. Sa build. No noise.

Then a third.

This one stepped out from between the trees ahead, moving like it had always been there, like the forest had grown it and just let it go now.

Lucen didn’t flinch.

’Great. A pattern. I love patterns that kill people.’

His system pinged softly.

[Hostile Presence Increased]

[New Entities Detected: 5]

[Classification: Humanoid Construct / Frost Variant]

[Sync Rating: 14% — Combat Behavior Unknown]

[Recomnded: Distance or Pre-emptive Strike]

"Of course," Lucen muttered. "Because that’s helpful."

He took a half step back, boots crunching softly into the packed snow.

Another dropped. Directly behind him.

Then one more from the left, slow, dragging a bone-bladed polearm through the frost.

Lucen exhaled once. Short. Controlled.

Five of them now.

They didn’t breathe. Didn’t shift weight. No foot movent. Just stood there.

"I don’t suppose anyone here speaks normal," he said out loud.

No answer.

He flexed his fingers.

[Threadmask] still shimred around him, displacent holding steady.

The figures didn’t track the false image. Not yet.

One took a step forward, left side. Blade held at waist, reverse-gripped like it wasn’t the first ti.

Lucen’s system blinked again.

[Behavior Pattern Update: Coordinated Response Detected]

[Initiation Threshold: 6 Seconds Remaining]

He tilted his head.

’Wait. They’re counting down?’

Then—

The one in front moved.

Fast.

Not a charge.

A shift.

Snow kicked up. Blade ca low. Precise.

Lucen jumped sideways, activated [Shockweave Bolt] mid-movent. He didn’t aim at the attacker. He cast it at the one behind him.

The bolt snapped sideways. The figure took it square in the chest. Paused, but didn’t drop.

’Too much armor. No nerves to fry.’

Another closed in. Right side. Polearm sweeping wide.

Lucen ducked under the arc, dropped to one knee and fired [Frost Spire] directly behind him.

The ice spike launched, vertical, catching the second one under the chin and lifting it off the ground.

Two more stepped in.

Lucen rolled left, low.

The figures didn’t make noise. No grunts. No calls.

Just blade, step, turn, repeat.

’I’m fighting an ice ballet.’

[System: Mana 122 / 148]

[Recovery Rate Active: 2.6/sec]

Lucen kicked upward, broke the snow crust, spun back.

[Soundlash.]

The concussive burst cracked through the cold.

Three of them staggered. One dropped to a knee. Another tilted like its inner balance had just reset.

Lucen didn’t wait.

[Ignition Burst]—fired straight into the one still stunned.

It flared on contact. Armor cracked. Snow lted around the impact.

But it still moved.

’These things don’t quit.’

He pivoted fast, checked angles.

The trees had stopped swaying.

The snow didn’t fall anymore.

He was in a fight loop, and the drift liked it.

[Cataclysm Vector] pinged on standby.

Lucen didn’t trigger it.

Not yet.

He backed up three steps, keeping the five in view. Two slowed. One circled left. One crouched. One climbed a tree again like it was about to repeat the first strike.

He frowned.

"They’re syncing."

The one with the polearm rushed again.

Lucen activated [Crater Bloom] right under its path. The ground hissed.

Boom—

The mine snapped upward in a sharp vertical column, flinging the creature back. One limb ca off. Still no scream. Just a hard fall and motionless lay.

’Finally.’

[EXP Gained: 22]

[Sub-class Bonus: 0.8]

[Partial Record: Analyzed]

[System Update: Enemy Sync Delay Triggered — 5s Delay Between Unit Movents]

Lucen smirked.

"They get slower the more I kill. That’s new."

The rest circled tighter.

Lucen clenched his fist.
