Ning Que and Lian Zhen surged forward, propelled by adrenaline and an urgent determination, their targets locked: the steel-skinned monster that had erupted from the cracked earth monts before.

Rain fell in relentless sheets around them, the world illuminated intermittently by flashes of mana crackling between the combatants strewn across the battlefield. Lian soared into the air, her black glaive arcing back for a sweeping strike. Her laugh rang like a bell; it was wild and unrestrained.

"Co on, ugly! Ti for a warm hug!" she shouted, her excitent betraying the chaos of the situation.

Ning mirrored her urgency, his Katana of Light re-materializing in his hand with a familiar hum. The system pinged inside his mind..

{Weapon Re-summoned. Mana Consumption: 4% per minute. Auto-Stabilization: Enabled.}

But Ning barely registered it, his focus entirely on the creature looming before them. Its grotesque form towered against the backdrop of the storm, three beady eyes glinting with hunger, a jagged maw leaking tendrils of black mana.

"Don’t get too cocky!" Ning called out, his tone edged with a seriousness that contrasted with Lian’s bravado.

But Lian was already in motion, her glaive cutting through the rain like it was nothing. With a ferocious grin, she landed the first strike, a powerful slash that tore across the monster’s chest, releasing a shockwave of crimson light that split the ground in her wake. She laughed triumphantly.

"How do you like that, baby? Welco to S-Rank class!"

The beast staggered back, but it did not fall. Lian twirled her glaive, her eyes sparkling with mischief as she glanced back at Ning.

"Try not to slow down, Ragged Boy. I’d hate for the fun to end early." She repeated.

Ning responded with decisive action, disappearing in a flickering Echo Step. He reappeared behind the creature, slashing upward with a strike that glowed with radiant energy. The blade connected with its spine, igniting a howl of agony from the beast.

{Weak Point Hit. Bonus XP: 50. Progression: 62% to Level 11.}

"Impressive!" Lian remarked, montarily surprised as she turned to catch the speed of his assault. "Okay! You’ve got so juice, I’ll give you that."

The creature let out a growl, its body shifting and contorting as it adapted to their attacks. Molten plates of armor began to replace its cracked hide, and serrated bone-blades sprouted from its arms, glistening nacingly in the torrential downpour.

The battlefield shifted with it, the rainfall mixing with the essence of corruption that seeped from the monster and radiated from the Hollow Verge.

"Just keep moving!" Ning shouted, narrowly dodging a swing from one of the newly ford blades. "Stay light on your feet!"

"Is that what they teach you in those fancy schools? Because your footwork could use so finesse!" Lian quipped, her glaive slicing through the air before her.

Their fighting styles collided, Lian’s bold confidence contrasting with Ning’s agile, almost evasive attacks. With each flurry, they exchanged barbs laced with laughter.

"Is that really the best you can do? I’ve seen Guild interns dodge better!" Lian taunted, spinning to deliver a sweeping attack.

"Try not to cut yourself, Sword Girl!" Ning shot back, parrying a blow from the monster’s newly ford arm.

"You keep swinging like that, and I might just have to report you for style abuse!" Lian jabbed, her laughter infectious.

"You talk more than the system does," Ning muttered as he danced around a thrust, even allowing a small grin to crest his lips. Lian snorted, unable to suppress her amusent.

As the chaos intensified, they adjusted their rhythm, their movents becoming fluid within the bedlam. The creature lunged with terrifying speed, but they managed to pin it between them, flanking it with a determination forged in camaraderie.

"Let’s finish this!" Lian called out, her voice strong and resolute.

"On three?" Ning suggested, his hand tightening around the hilt of his katana.

"Always better with drama. One... two..." And without waiting for the count, Lian unleashed her signature move, Heaven Fang Drive. The glaive cleaved through the monster’s limb with a satisfying crunch and a blast of light that carved the air, sending shards of corrupted armor flying.

With perfect timing, Ning followed up with his own attack, a Flash Cut, followed by Thorn Drive, his katana piercing the creature’s exposed core.

As the monster succumbed to their combined might, it let out one final, desperate howl before collapsing into a cloud of Rift ash and fragnts, vanishing like a wisp of smoke in the deluge.

The system chid, the notification echoing in Ning’s mind:

{Core Acquired. Passive Skill: Steel Blood Damage resistance increased by 12% for 10 seconds after taking damage. Level Up: 12. Title Progression: Abyss Walker – 64%.}

Lian strode past the remnants of the beast, whistling a cheerful tune.

"You’re not bad, you know. Ugly, but not bad." She twirled her glaive in a casual display, propping it on her shoulder. "Still, I’m top dog here. Don’t you forget it."

Ning wiped rain from his brow, the thrill of victory coursing through him.

"Sure, but it was teamwork that took it down. You should give so credit."

"Credit? Ha! Let know when you can do more than shadow ." Her playful challenge hung in the air between them, but before they could relax, a rumble rattled the ground beneath their feet.

"What was that?" Ning turned, his instincts screaming.

Lian’s expression shifted. Her earlier bravado faltered as she looked around.

"I don’t like this."

The world shook with a deep, resonating pulse that rippled through the terrain like a heartbeat. A portion of the ground cracked open, unveiling a buried shrine of ancient design that began to rise from the earth, its grand structure adorned with sigils that glowed ominously.

Ning stepped closer, compelled. His Katana of Light began to hum, responding to an unseen force emanating from the shrine.

"I think I’ve been here before... in a dream," he murmured, fingers itching toward a mysterious seal embedded in the door.

"Don’t you dare touch that!" Lian snapped, slamming her glaive against the door with a resounding clang. "You don’t know what kind of crap is sealed down there."

Ning hesitated at her outburst, glancing back at her with concern etched on his features.

"But..."

"Oh great," Lian interrupted, rolling her eyes. "Ragged Boy has prophetic nightmares now. Just what we need."

Before he could protest further, the system pinged again in urgency:

{Warning: Unregistered Zone Detected. Classification: Pri Echo Site. Entry not advised without High Reclair Clearance.}

The giant circular door at the shrine’s heart trembled, lights pulsing in rapid succession, air warping as if reality itself challenged their presence.

"Ning!" Lian’s voice rose in alarm as she realized the potency of the aura swirling from within. "We have to leave! Now!"

But Ning could hear it as a faint whisper echoing in his mind, a voice that seed to rise from the blade itself or perhaps from forgotten shards of his own mories.

"You locked it once. Will you open it again?"

"Ning, please!" Lian shouted, drawing back, her eyes wide with fear. "That’s not just any door. It’s bad news!"

Suddenly, the shrine’s energies swelled violently, and Ning’s instincts overrode his caution. He reached for the seal just as another ping from the system reverberated: {Resonance Detected. Sovereign Bloodline Confird. Access Granted. Initiating: Vault Awakening Protocol.}

"Get back! If you touch that !" Lian’s warning was swallowed by a surge of energy that erupted from the door.

The air crackled, and from within, an inky black hand erged, not humanoid, not bestial, but sothing ancient, a remnant rembered by the system itself.

Lian leaped back, her heart racing. "What the hell is that?!"

A form began to pull itself through the doorway. Clad in full black armor, its crimson runes glowing with eldritch energy, it wielded a blade etched with Rift script, a blade that mirrored Ning’s own but was older, almost as if it breathed with life.

The system went into hysterics.

{Warning: Historical Echo Detected. Fragnted Reclair Identity Alpha Designation: N.Q.}

{Threat Level: Unquantifiable.}

{Sanity Risk Detected. Suggested Action: RUN}

Ning staggered back with the roar of his heart pounding in his ears. It couldn’t be, yet there it was. The figure raised its head, and Ning’s stomach dropped as it t his gaze.

It had his face.

Only older. Stronger.

And smiling, but not in any way that could be considered kind.

"You opened the door," it announced in a voice distorted and rich with malice. "Now face what you were... before you fell."

"What the hell is that?!" Lian shouted with her bravado evaporating and giving way to raw fear she wouldn’t like to admit naturally.

They were both faced with sothing that was a little too complex even for their combined effort. Ning suddenly felt the need to level up real fast!

"Kill if you want to live," the figure urged, raising its blade as the ground began to fracture beneath them and Trees exploded into dust all around them...
