The weather was cool under the do on the night, but the pitch? It was a pressure cooker already.
Over 82,000 fans filled the stands of the AT&T, creating an electric atmosphere, Balkan drums against the roar of La Albiceleste.
It was a tale of the Resilient Kings vs the Reigning Lions.
Croatia, eternal survivors, tournant warriors, had gritted past Ghana in extra ti.
Luka Modric, aged 40, was still pulling strings in midfield. Josko Gvardiol was a rock. Petkovic and Majer? They were the sharp ends of a wise, iron-forged spear.
Argentina; champions, drears, defenders of legacy.
ssi wasn't the engine anymore, but the soul. The new core; Enzo, Alvarez, and Mac Allister played throughout the tournant like a symphony.
Every movent carried purpose. Every mont ant more.
And now, with a semifinal berth on the line, the clash began.
Croatia lined up in their classic 4-3-3 with Dominik Livakovic in goal, while ahead of him was the defensive quadruple of Josip Stanisic, Josko Gvardiol, Martin Erlic, and Borna Sosa.
In midfield was the dynamic trio of Luka Modric, Mateo Kovacic, and Lovro Majer, while the attacking trio comprised Andrej Kramaric, Bruno Petkovic, and Mario Pasalic.
As for Argentina, starting in the sa 4-3-3 formation, Emiliano Martinez played in goal behind a defensive wall of Nahuel Molina, Cristian Roro, Lisandro Martinez, and Marcos Acuna.
In midfield was the trio of Enzo Fernandez, Rodrigo De Paul, and Alexis Mac Allister, while the attacking trio were Lionel ssi, Julian Alvarez, and Nico Gonzalez.
FWEEE!
The ga started at the referee's signal.
The first half was a gritty dance.
From kickoff, Croatia imposed control; their midfield triangle rotating like clockwork. But what Croatia did in control and technicality, Argentina matched with pace and pressure.
Argentina had the edge early.
In the 13th minute, Alvarez burst through with ssi's slicing through ball splitting the Croatian defense open like a hot knife through butter.
One on one with Livakovic, the Croatian goalkeeper, Alvarez unleashed his shot only for the goalkeeper to save with his leg. A statent.
In the 22nd minute, Croatia had their first chance of the ga, Modric passing to Pasalic, who cut inside and curled just over.
Emiliano Martinez stretched but didn't touch it. Argentina exhaled.
It was tight now, but not for long.
Out of nowhere, a ssi mont of magic happened!
It happened in the 38th minute.
From the right flank, ssi received the ball and twisted past Gvardiol with an unreal turn, then unleashed a left-footed shot from a near-impossible angle.
Livakovic didn't expect it. The ball snuck past.
1-0 Argentina.
Just like that, Argentina gained the lead.
The feverish atmosphere in the stadium rose even higher.
Tiless from ssi. Poetic as Argentina erupted in joy. Croatia was furious, helpless, but they were not beaten. Not yet.
The first half ca to an end 1-0 in Argentina's favor.
When second half started, Croatia heaped the pressure, tightening the midfield battle even as they pressed forward.
It didn't take them long to get their lifeline.
In the 56th minute, the relentless pressure finally paid off as Bruno Petkovic scored the much-sought equalizer.
Majer's corner was half-cleared, but Modric pounced, weaving between two defenders and slipping the ball wide for Petkovic to thunder into the net off the post.
1-1.
The stadium shook with equal parts disbelief and respect.
Lionel Scaloni finally made changes, bringing in Thiago Almada for Gonzalez. Lo Celso also ca in. Argentina recalibrated.
Argentina piled on the pressure again.
In the 72nd minute, tens of Argentine fans around the stadium rose to their feet as they were sure they finally got the lead goal again.
Alvarez's header beat Livakovic, only for Gvardiol to track back like a hurricane, sliding the ball off the line!
Heroic from the Manchester City man. He singlehandedly kept Croatia in the ga.
In the 80th minute, ssi went at it again, dribbling through three players, nutgging Sosa, before firing… CLANG!
The post denied him glory.
ssi grabbed his head and ruffled his hair in frustration.
But then ca the twist.
7 minutes after ssi hit the post, in the 87th minute, Modric was dispossessed by De Paul, who quickly fed ssi.
A no-look pass into space t Enzo Fernandez's late run, slicing the Croatian defense open one more ti. And this ti, Croatia paid for ssi's brilliance.
With one touch, Enzo Fernandez steadied the ball.
With his next touch, he buried it low past Livakovic.
2-1 Argentina.
BOOM!
Madness at the AT&T. Celebration. Relief.
After that, Croatia abandoned caution and threw everything forward. Corner after corner ca in; Martinez claid them all.
He turned into a wall at the final minutes of the ga, the last hindrance to Modric's ambitious World Cup dream, the final boss in the World Cup ga for Luka Modric and Croatia.
Modric tried, he did everything, and then before he knew it…
FWEEE!
The ga ca to an end.
[FULL-TI: Croatia 1-2 Argentina]
Luka Modric broke down in tears, unable to hold them in. He already confird it in a press conference before the ga.
If Croatia lost tonight, this was his last ga for his country.
The champions survived. Croatia, valiant, bruised, but proud fell short once again. It was not the farewell that Modric wanted, but he left with pride and mories.
He left a legend.
Lionel ssi claid another man of the match award with his vintage display culminating with 1 goal, 1 assist, and 3 dribbles completed.
Like the comntator said:
"The mont demanded greatness. He delivered again".
At the end of the ga, ssi faced the dia.
"We know how to suffer. But we also know how to win".
Zlatko Dalic, the Croatian coach also faced the dia. "We fought until the last breath. There's no sha in this. Only pride".
A goofy Emiliano Martinez also faced the dia.
"We bleed for each other. That's why we're still alive".
