Chapter 614: Chapter 614. Switch Side
"King Huang Ti didn’t let us see the artifact, but from the way he spoke, he clearly had one hidden away," Wei Zhuang continued his story. "We didn’t tell him the whole story, but we could see that he was not interested in opposing Oredolia. Hence, we decided to back off without revealing too much."
"That’s why you have Khode and Farghous invade Echos when you made your move," Amon said.
"Yes," Wei Zhuang nodded. "Echos and Kazhan are the two countries we failed to bring into our fold. We must keep them in check, but Khode’s failure has caused a setback in our plan. We hoped to defeat Oredolia within a year, but it seems unlikely now with how things are going."
"I see. That’s why you approached ," Amon said.
"That’s right. King Huang Ti is unwilling to join our cause, but King Huang San might. I am hoping you can help us persuade him."
"Why would I do that?" Amon asked.
Wei Zhuang sighed and shook his head. "Well, I guess a man like you is never truly interested in doing the right thing, even when it ans your survival? I an, if we don’t defeat the Temple of Divinity, no one will survive. Echos will fall, and by extension, you as well."
"Firstly, you are correct. I’m not the kind of man who does the right thing. Secondly, why should I believe anything you said? All you said are just words. You provide no evidence. For all I know, this is your ploy to redirect my attention, so Khode is saved from my conquest."
"You are one confident son of a bitch to think that you can pull this conquest off. I will give you that," Wei Zhuang uttered. "If it is evident you want, very well, I will show it to you."
Wei Zhuang revealed a weirdly shaped stone. Seeing that one of its sides was smooth, Amon figured the stone was a broken fragnt of an orb.
"In the past, there was an artifact where one could record the events around them. The recorded events can be viewed by soone who possesses the artifact."
"A mory stone?" Amon asked.
Wei Zhuang showed a surprised expression. "I am amazed you know the na," he said.
Amon knew about the artifact from one of the Pyramid Legacy’s books.
Since Amon already knew, Wei Zhuang didn’t waste ti explaining further. He injected his aether into the fragnt, and it began to shine. A pillar of light erged and enlarged into a giant image above them.
The image showed the scene of a big hall. The image centered on a woman in a ceremonial robe. She was walking with haste. One of her arms was extended below the image. Amon had often seen that pose in his previous world. It was soone taking a selfie recording.
The background was slightly hazy, but Amon could see there were many people inside the hall. The faces of so of those people were clear in the image. They all wore expressions of fear and concern. It was the sa for the woman.
Sounds accompanied the image. Rumbling sounds and the voices of people crying filled the background. They were a mixed cacophony of voices. Like the image, part of the sounds was also muddled. The clearest sound was the voice of the woman. She was in the middle of a speech when the image began.
"... ignore the warnings. We undermine those who warned us. Now we are paying the price. They are everywhere! All over the world. We can’t fight them. It is over for us. My wish now is to warn the future generation. I’m sure they will try to cover everything up, but I’ve set this mory stone to go into our secret vault..."
An explosive sound was heard, which caused the woman to turn her head. The hall was shaking. Dust fell from the ceiling. From the scene, Amon understood they were hiding inside the hall while sothing tried to co inside.
"I don’t have much ti," the woman spoke again. "If anyone finds this mory stone, I pray you still have ti to change the fate of your world. Know this, the True Unity Church holds the key. They have known all along this will happen, you must..."
The image suddenly turned blurry, and the sound turned into white noise.
"The mory stone is damaged. It doesn’t contain the full recording," Wei Zhuang explained. He didn’t stop the image, though. He let it continue running, which ant there was still sothing to see.
Not long after, the scene returned with the woman. She was now shouting frantically, while the hall around her shook violently.
"... make sure to heed our advice, else your world will suffer the sa fate! Force the True Unity Church to spill their secrets! It is too late for us now! I pray it is not so for–Aaahhh...!!"
Another explosive sound. It was very loud this ti. The ceiling above the hall broke open. Blinding light rushed in and burned everyone, including the woman who held the mory stone.
While the woman was ablaze, the image distanced itself from her. From the way the image moved, the mory stone was flying up through the broken ceiling and away from there. As it did, Amon saw the sky outside. It was hazy, but several glowing figures were floating in the sky. In the distance were many other figures, but those were wrapped in darkness.
The image kept moving away from the broken building, which turned out to be a huge castle. Suddenly, a flash of light shot out from one of the glowing figures. The light chased after the mory stone and caught up in a short ti. The image was covered by blinding light before going out altogether.
The pillar of light returned into the stone fragnt, and the fragnt stopped glowing.
"It was probably the light at the end of the recording which broke this mory stone," Wei Zhuang said. "We can’t see the entire recording, but luckily, this fragnt still holds the part that is important."
"Mm... True Unity Church...?" Amon muttered.
"True Unity Church was one of the previous nas of the Temple of Divinity," Wei Zhuang explained. "We have several excavated records that ntion the church. All the characteristics described about that church were similar to our Temple of Divinity."
"So, what are you saying? Did the Temple of Divinity cause a catastrophe that wiped out everyone in the world except itself? What did they do that for?"
Wei Zhuang did a shoulder shrug and said, "Maybe they don’t like how civilization is going and decide to restart everything? No one knows, except for the higher-ups of the temple’s mbers. That’s why we must defeat them and find out their reason."
"If they have a weapon that could cause an apocalypse-level catastrophe, do you think we have a chance against them?" Amon asked.
"So what? Should we ignore them and let them bring about our extinction? No, we must strike first!" Wei Zhuang exclaid. "I believe there is a reason why they can only do it every ten million years. They might need to get ready first. We must defeat them before they are ready!"
Amon didn’t respond after that. An uneasy silence ensued. When Wei Zhuang was about to say sothing to push his case, Amon said, "I told King Huang San that if he let
invade this nation, I would learn the reason why Khode invaded Echos."
"I see. That’s great! Now you have achieved your objective. We can now focus on dealing with the real threat, Oredolia."
Amon chuckled. "I only said that so he would let
invade Khode. Learning the reason for the invasion is secondary."
This prompted Wei Zhuang’s expression to change. He sighed before saying, "I expected you to be an ambitious man, but didn’t expect you to be unreasonably so. So, are you saying you still choose to complete this conquest to solidify your fa and power even at the cost of the destruction of our world?"
"I am," Amon replied without hesitation.
Wei Zhuang frowned upon hearing it. He seed uncertain at first, but soon returned to his usual calm and composed deanor. "I wish it didn’t have to co to this, but I guess I have no choice for the good of the world. I will help you conquer Khode."
"Oh?" Amon showed a surprised expression.
"You give
no choice," Wei Zhuang responded to Amon’s surprise. "At this rate, the war will be prolonged further. Khode doesn’t seem to be able to chase your force away any ti soon. Our ti is ticking the longer we wait. The Temple of Divinity might get suspicious that we are onto them. They might hasten their preparation and bring about the apocalypse before its intended ti. If I must pick a side to ensure a swift conclusion to this war, I have a better chance by aiding you."
